Islands and Undesirables: Introduction to the Special Issue on Irregular Migration in Southern European Islands

This introduction presents the challenges to studying irregular migration in the southern European islands. After presenting the debates surrounding the category of irregular migration and recent developments in irregular migration to southern European islands, we argue that the situation of islands needs to be contextualized within the broader scheme of Euro-Mediterranean irregular migration. We then propose considering islands as remarkable “places of condensation” in the Euro-Mediterranean migratory setting. The article introduces two themes that will be developed throughout the special issue: (1) analyzing and challenging narratives of islandness and (2) policing and bordering the islands.     

The Politics of Negotiating the Terrorist Problem in Indonesia

Although Jemaah Islamiyah (JI) is a pan-Southeast Asia jihadi network, it has been able to headquarter itself in Indonesia, where it has also been able to find the lion's share of its recruits. This article finds that there is little support for hardline Islamic political movements, or even violent jihadi groups, from the wider population. Yet at the same time the public is skeptical about the existence of an international terrorist problem. Not only is there general denial amongst the Indonesian population but Indonesia's political leaders have had to tread carefully on the issue. Indonesia has had a degree of success in denting the JI network but confronting terrorism on the whole is fraught with political difficultiesnotably the impression that the war on terrorism might be a plot to weaken the Islamic world.     

An econometric model of the monetary sector in Indonesia

The purpose of this article is to develop an econometric model of the Indonesian monetary sector over the period 1969–80. Before we constructed such a model, we tested the hypothesis that there is a causal relationship between money supply and the aggregate price index using quarterly data. The hypothesis of a causal relationship from prices to money was supported while the hypothesis of contemporaneous causality could not be easily dismissed.

In the model, both money supply and the aggregate price index were used as endogenous variables and they were decomposed into several disaggregates. The possibility of a structural break after the oil price shock (post‐1973) was examined using forecasting criteria. The predictive performance for 1969–73 is better than for 1974–80.

Explaining chronic inflation in Indonesia

This paper describes and analyses Indonesia's frustrating experience with chronic inflation, and demonstrates that the cause of continuing moderately high inflation is excessive growth of base money. It examines the central bank's current target growth rates for narrow and broad money and bank lending, and argues instead in favour of a single target rate for base money as the key to bringing inflation under control.
