A Trade War Brews

ON September 11,2009, the U.S. announced a three-year punitive tariffon imports of Chinese tires. Two days later the Chinese Ministry of Commerce （MOC） responded by launching antidumping and anti-subsidy investigations on some American auto and chicken products. On October 30 the U.S. International Trade Commission （ITC） reached affirmative threat determinations on China-made seamless steel pipes, giving the Department of Commerce the go ahead to continue its antidumping and countervailing duty investigations on these imports.     

Mixed Results from the Tianjin Meeting

THE 14th session of the AWGKP （Ad Hoc Working Group on Further Commitments for Annex I Parties under the Kyoto Protocol） and the 12th session of the AWG-LCA （Ad Hoc Working Group on Long-Term Cooperative Action） took place from October 4 to 9, 2010 in Tianjin. The participants - representatives of both national governments and non-governmental organizations - hailed the positive results of their talks, at the same time acknowledging wide divergence on some important issues.     

CSHRS President Visits Belgium,EU Headquarters

The China Society for Human Rights Studies （CSHRS） shared its views on human rights with European officials and scholars when CSHRS President Luo Haocai, heading a CSHRS delegation, visited Belgium and the headquarters of the European Union and the European Commission on September 19-24, 2009.

China＇s population of Internet users now numbers 298 million, and the worldwide web has profoundly impacted people＇s lives in both positive and negative ways. On the eve of this year＇s sessions of the National People＇s Congress （NPC） and the Chinese People＇s Political Consultative Conference （CPPCC）, Premier Wen Jiabao engaged the nation＇s netizens during a two- hour interactive web chat. During the sessions, Wen regularly logged on to collect the people＇s opinions on their progress.     

China＇s ASEAN Overtures

CHINA＇s No. 1 and No. 2 leaders both visited ASEAN countries in October. From October 2 to 5, 2013 President Xi Jinping visited Indonesia and Malaysia, and then attended the 21st economic leaders＇ meeting at the APEC forum in Bali. Hot on his heels, on October 9, Premier Li Keqiang arrived in Brunei, where he attended the 16th ASEAN-China （10＋1） Summit, the 16th ASEAN Plus Three （10＋3） Summit, and the 8th East Asia Summit. From there Li then headed to Thailand and Vietnam.

Chile-China Agreement on Astronomical Research
China and Chile agreed on an annual fund of US $3 million for joint astronomical research on October 4. The agreement was signed between Chile＇s National Commission for Scientific and Technological Research （Conicyt） and the Chinese Academy of Sciences （CAS）. The fund, to be implemented from 2014, will be used for joint training and research programs. ＂This is one of the most important milestones of Sino-Chilean cooperation in science and technology ever obtained,＂ said President of Conicyt Mateo Budinich.     

Law School of Nankai University Holds International Seminar on National Human Rights Action Plan

The Information Office of the State council issued the first National Human Rights Action Plan of China （NHRAP） （2009-2010） on April 13, 2009. The Nankai University participated in the drafting of this significant national document on human rights, with three teachers invited one after another to work at the panel of experts under the drafting committee. In cooperation with the Raoul Wallenberg Institute of Human Rights and Humanitarian Law （RWlHRHL） of Sweden, the Research Center for Human Rights under Law School of the university held an international seminar titled ＂Formulation and Implementation of NHRAP- Swedish Experience.＂
