正At the ceremony marking the centenary of the Communist Party of China's(CPC's) founding on July 1, Xi Jinping, General Secretary of the CPC Central Committee, President of the People's Republic of China, and Chairman of the Central Military Commission, declared on behalf of the Party and the people that through the continued efforts of the Party and the nation at large, China has realized its first centenary goal of building a moderately prosperous society in all respects.     

Good Leadership and Common Prosperity

正Beijing recently released a new white paper providing a comprehensive overview of a multitude of efforts to achieve a xiaokang, or moderately prosperous, society, on schedule in 2021, coinciding with the centenary of the founding of the Communist Party of China(CPC). First described in the modern era by Deng Xiaoping in 1979, subsequent generations of Chinese leadership made this concept central to national development goals.     

Chinese Growth Shifts Gear:From Speed to Quality

The Communist Party of China (CPC) set the goals and strategies for China’s future development at its 18th National Congress in November.Its two overarching objectives are to complete the building of a moderatelyprosperous society in all respects by 2020, and to build China into a modern socialist country that is prosperous, democratic, culturally advanced, and harmonious by 2050.

COVER STORY If all goes according to plan, Chinese air travellers will be boarding big commercial airliners designed and manufactured in China by the year 2020. The aviation market, long dominated by Boeing and Airbus, will face a home grown challenge in a lucrative arena that is forecast to see China purchase 2230 new aircraft in the period leading up to 2025. It is hoped that many of those aircraft would be stamped “Made in China.” With government lending its weight to the development process, the civil aviation industry is aware it will take time to get into full flight and has fastened its seatbelts. Known for its high risk, hi-tech input and snail pace returns, the industry is taking it one step at a time all the way to the runway.

According to a joint investigation by a group of top world companies, China has for the first time surpassed the U.S. to become the most favored destination for direct foreign investment. The Financial Times reports that the September 11th incident has provoked worries about security in the U.S among foreign investors. According to UN statistics, nearly US $50 billion of direct foreign investment was channeled into China in 2001, and still more is on its way. Foreign investment in the United States, on the other hand, dropped from its 2000 level of US $301 billion to US $125 biinon.

A Wall Street Journal report on May 3, said the IMF is likely to declare, for the first time in more than a decade, that the yuan is fairly valued. “China’s contributions to the world economy in recent years are obvious to all. It’s natural for the IMF, a multilateral international organization,to change its attitude toward the Chinese currency,” Tan Yaling, President of China Forex Investment Research Institute, said during an interview with China Radio International.
