This study presents a comprehensive 4-factor model of autonomy in middle and late adolescence. Partially overlapping sets of scales on adolescent individuation and family functioning were correlated with each other in 2 independent studies. Data for the first study were taken from a sample of high school students in Grades 9–12 (N = 601), whereas the data for the second study were derived from a sample of 1st-year university students (N = 374). Confirmatory factor analysis on all of the scales and derivative subscales in both studies revealed a model that comprised 4 different but related factors, that is, Connectedness, Separation, Detachment, and Agency, all of which occupy a central place in different theories of adolescent autonomy. Connectedness and Detachment, and to a lesser extent Connectedness and Separation, were inversely related to one another. Correlations between Agency and the 3 other factors were much lower. Results are discussed with respect to the different views on autonomy that exist in the literature, and with respect to the term autonomy, which should be used as an umbrella term only. Implications for the conceptual basis of the Emotional Autonomy Scale are also outlined. 相似文献

The objective of this study was to investigate the links between maternal and paternal bonding, parental practices, orientation
toward peers, and the prevalence of drug use and antisocial behavior during late adolescence. A model was tested using structural
equation modeling in order to verify the robustness of the investigated links across 3 countries: Canada, France, and Italy.
A self-report questionnaire was given to a sample of 908 adolescents, with an equivalent number of girls and boys, in Grade
11. The questionnaire assessed the following variables: parental bonding, parental supervision, parental tolerance, orientation
toward peers, involvement in physically aggressive antisocial behavior, non-physically aggressive antisocial behavior, and
drug use. The model was robust across the 3 countries, thus confirming a path that identified quality of emotional bonds between
adolescents and their parents as a distal variable acting upon deviant behaviors through the following mediators: parental
supervision, parental tolerance, frequency of conflicts, and orientation toward peers.

Personality disorder symptoms were investigated in a community sample of young people (n = 714) to assess their relationship over time with well-being during adolescence and the emergence of intimacy in early adulthood. Drawing on Erikson's theory of psychosocial development, changes in adolescent well-being were conceptualized as indirect indicators of identity consolidation. Cluster B personality disorder symptoms (borderline, histrionic, and narcissistic symptoms) were conceptualized to represent identity diffusion—i.e. maladaptive personality traits that usually resolve during the identity crisis of adolescence. Latent growth models were used in 2 age cohorts to assess (1) interrelationships between Cluster B symptoms, well-being, and intimacy at mean ages 13.8 and 18.6 years; and (2) associations between their developmental trajectories over the next 6 years. As expected, higher personality disorder symptoms were associated with lower well-being during adolescence, and declines in personality disorder symptoms over time were associated with corresponding gains in well-being. Consistent with Erikson's developmental theory, there was an inverse relationship between Cluster B symptoms and intimacy that increased in strength as young people entered adulthood. As an indicator of successful identity consolidation, well-being was significantly associated with intimacy in female adolescents and young adults. 相似文献

This study examined the associations between adolescents’ daily Internet use and low well-being (i.e., loneliness, low self-esteem,
and depressive moods). We hypothesized that (a) linkages between high levels of daily Internet use and low well-being would
be mediated by compulsive Internet use (CIU), and (b) that adolescents with low levels of agreeableness and emotional stability,
and high levels of introversion would be more likely to develop CIU and lower well-being. Data were used from a sample of
7888 Dutch adolescents (11–21 years). Results from structural equation modeling analyses showed that daily Internet use was
indirectly related to low well-being through CIU. In addition, daily Internet use was found to be more strongly related to
CIU in introverted, low-agreeable, and emotionally less-stable adolescents. In turn, again, CIU was more strongly linked to
loneliness in introverted, emotionally less-stable, and less agreeable adolescents.

The current study explored specific aspects of sports and individuals on 4 domains of the self-system (physical competence
and physical appearance self-concept, global physical and general self-esteem). Participants were 351 adolescents (M
age = 13.45, SD = 1.25 years, males n = 132) recruited from elite sports and regular school classrooms. Participants were separated into groups based on sports
participation (elite athletes, n = 171, competitive athletes, n = 71; and non-athletes, n = 145). The intensity of the activity (strenuous, moderate, and mild), the level of athleticism (competitive, elite, non-athlete),
gender, and sport orientation (win, goal, competitive) were examined. The level of athleticism (elite, competitive, and non-athlete)
was found to be positively related to physical competence and appearance self-concept as well as global physical and general
self-esteem. Analyses revealed a significant difference between the non-athletes and both the competitive and elite groups
(with a difference between the latter two for physical competence only). Sport orientation was found to moderate the relation
between athleticism and general self-esteem; non-athletes who had a greater win orientation or lower competitive orientation
were also lower in self-esteem. Thus, the fit between the level of competition and self-concept may depend on characteristics
of the individual such as her/her sport orientation.

Early onset of criminal career is one of the most robust predictors of persistence in offending. However, many antisocial
children do not become chronic adult offenders. Using longitudinal data of young male offenders in the California Youth Authority,
we examined trajectories of criminal behavior from childhood to adulthood. We particularly focused on the main and interaction
effects of age at their first arrest and completion of high school education. First, we found that, on average, cumulative
crime trajectory was curvilinear, with a subtle increase in childhood followed by a rapid increase in late adolescence and
a slow down in adulthood. Second, earlier starters had a steeper cumulative growth in criminal behavior over time. Third,
finishing high school served as a potential turning point in offenders’ lives, particularly for later starters. The results
highlight that continuity and desistance in crime can be partially understood by timing of significant events and heterogeneity
in response to turning points.

Research examining the relationship between internalizing symptoms and antisocial behaviors has generally been cross-sectional
in design. Thus, although extant data have substantiated a strong correlation between internalizing symptoms and antisocial
behaviors, few studies have focused on describing the nature of the co-occurrence over time. This study examined the relation
between growth in internalizing symptoms and longitudinal patterns of antisocial behavior in a sample of 283 inner-city males
and their caregivers assessed as part of a longitudinal developmental risk study. Participants were assessed annually in four
waves. Non-offenders and escalating offenders had lower levels of internalizing problems at wave 1 than did chronic minor
and serious-chronic-violent offenders. Results revealed a developmental trend of decreasing internalizing problems across
study years for most participants, as would be expected, with adolescents participating in serious, chronic, and violent patterns
of antisocial behavior displaying greater internalizing problems than those participating in stable patterns of less serious
or no antisocial behavior. Further, when there was escalation of seriousness and frequency of antisocial behavior, there also
was increased internalizing problems relative to non-escalating juveniles. Results are discussed in the context of developmental
psychopathology.

The persistence of adolescents’ political attitudes and behaviors into adulthood is a perennial concern in research on developmental
psychology. While some authors claim that adolescents’ attitudinal patterns will remain relatively stable throughout the life
cycle, others argue that the answers of adolescents in political surveys have but a limited predictive value for their future
attitudes and behaviors. In this article, we tackle this question on an aggregate level, by comparing survey data for 14,
18 and 18 to 30 year old respondents from eight European countries (n = resp. 22,620; 20,142 and 2800). We examine political trust, attitudes toward immigrants’ rights and voting behavior. The
analysis suggests that country patterns with regard to political trust and attitudes toward immigrant rights are already well
established by the age of 14. We find less indications for stability in the relation between intention to vote (for 14 and
18 years olds) and actual voting behavior (for young adults). The latent structure of the political trust scale was found
to be equivalent for the three age groups we investigated. We close by offering some suggestions on why attitudinal stability
seems stronger than behavioral stability.

The purpose of the present study was to examine the direct and indirect effects (through peer contacts) of parental knowledge
on adolescents’ delinquent and aggressive problem behavior, using latent growth curve modeling. A sample of 457 13- to 14-year
old adolescents at first measurement wave (M=13.27; SD=0.45 years) filled out questionnaires about their parents, peers, and problem behavior three times with 1-year
intervals in between. Regarding initial levels of behavior, both direct and indirect effects of parental knowledge were found
on aggressive as well as on delinquent behavior. When the rate of change in behaviors was considered, only direct effects
were found for both types of problem behavior, whereas indirect effects were absent. Gender differences were also found, with
stronger effects of parenting on both aggressive and delinquent problem behavior for boys and stronger effects of peer contacts
on aggressive behavior for girls. The present study shows that different behaviors of the externalizing spectrum have different
trajectories and diverse relations with parenting and should not be treated as identical.
