"The girls of today cannot see themselves in Miss Yonge and that is their chief demand from literature" -Edith Sichel, Monthly Review, May 1901 The depths to which the reputation of popular conservative Victorian novelist, Charlotte Yonge, had sunk by the end of the nineteenth century are reflected in Oscar Wilde's reaction to being told a condemned man was reading one of Yonge's novels: "My heart was turned by the eyes of the doomed man, but if he reads The Heir of Redclyffe it's perhaps as well to let the law take its course" (Ellman 202). 相似文献

This article discusses the previously unresearched reception of Nordic women writers in the Slovenian cultural space. The first part presents the early reception of Nordic women writers in the nineteenth century up until the First World War. It analyses both the passive reception (the presence of books by Nordic women writers in library catalogues, references in the press and in egodocuments) as well as the active reception (literary influence). The second part of the article details the case study of Sigrid Undset’s reception, which is very intense and is still ongoing today (the most recent translation is from 2015). Through the methods and approaches of translation, intercultural, polysystem, and gender studies, this article explores the impact of Nordic women writers in the Slovenian literary polysystem and the influence of gender in the reception process. The article concludes that the writings of Nordic women writers brought representations of women’s lives to the Slovenian cultural space. Moreover, this has been of great interest for the Slovenian reading audience since female characters rarely serve as protagonists in Slovenian literature (except in some works written by Slovenian women writers). Slovenian feminists regarded Nordic women writers as role models and legitimized their own feminist demands by quoting the works of Nordic women writers and by referring to their successful writing careers. Therefore, the writings of Nordic women writers fill in a gap in Slovenian literature and supplement and enrich it. 相似文献

The purpose of this article is to provide an understanding of the present state of knowledge about the probIem of substance abuse among Hispanic youth and to identify issues with which researchers, clinicians, administrators, and policy makers will have to deal in the coming decade. To do so, it will focus on five major areas: (1) the limitations of drug-related statistics; (2) demographic characteristics of Hispanics in the United States; (3) a review of the literature on Hispanic adolescent substance abuse; (4) factors inhibiting a comprehensive analysis of the problem, its treatment, and appropriate policies; and (5) issues for the 1980s. 相似文献

Psychological distress has been increasingly implicated as an important risk factor that predisposes adolescents toward alcohol and drug use, particularly for Hispanics and other ethnic minority groups. The scant research on the relation between psychosocial stress and alcohol use has found higher levels of alcohol and drug use among Hispanic adolescents who report higher levels of psychological and emotional distress. In this study, Hispanic adolescents (N=171, with a median age of 14, completed a paper- and-pencil questionnaire, which was designed to assess levels of psychosocial stress, anxiety, and depression. Self-reported patterns of alcohol use were also assessed. In general, males reported higher levels of alcohol use and more friends who drink, compared to females. The study also found generational differences in drinking patterns. A strong association between psychosocial stress, depression, and alcohol use also was found, suggesting that Hispanic adolescents are using alcohol as a way of coping with conflicts in adapting to the norms and expectations of the dominant group and other difficult events and conditions that produce psychological distress.Received Ph.D. in 1988 from the University of California, Los Angeles, specializing in developmental psychology. Research interests include the educational attainment of Hispanic and minority children, alcohol use among adolescents, and social policy. 相似文献

Although the number of students who complete high school continues to rise, dramatic differences in school success remain
across racial/ethnic groups. The current study addressed Hispanic adolescents’ academic performance by investigating the relationships
of parental involvement, culturally responsive teaching, sense of school belonging, and academic self-efficacy and academic
performance. Participants were 478 (51.5% female) Hispanic 7th graders in the US-Mexico borderlands. Based on Bronfenbrenner’s
ecological systems theory, a structural model was tested. Results showed that the proposed model was supported by demonstrating
significant indirect effects of parental involvement, culturally responsive teaching, and sense of school belonging on academic
performance. Furthermore, academic self-efficacy was found to mediate the relationships between parental involvement, culturally
responsive teaching, and sense of school belonging and academic performance. The current study provides a useful psychoecological
model to inform educators and psychologists who seek to meet the needs of Hispanic students. 相似文献

‘We're cause people, whether we like it or not,’ said Mai-Mai Sze to a black student who had just been shunned by two white students at a lunch counter in Wellesley, Massachusetts. Eurasian writers Sui Sin Far (Edith Eaton, 1867–1914) and Han Suyin (Rosalie Chou, 1917– ) would strongly concur. Though separated by space and time, both have taken as their cause the wrongs done to peoples of color, primarily the Chinese, and to women. In her short stories Sui Sin Far fought the prevailing notions of the Chinese in America as ‘heathen’ and ‘unassimilable.’ Attentive to the world situation, Han Suyin has been fighting for the oppressed in sixteen books from 1942 to her most recent novel in 1985. In several novels, she draws an important connection between colonialism and sexism. This paper compares the socio-political atmosphere of their times and their literary contributions to their cause. 相似文献

The risk for depression increases as Hispanic youth acculturate to U.S. society. This association is stronger for Hispanic girls than boys. To better understand the influence of culture and family on depressive symptoms, we tested a process-oriented model of acculturation, cultural values, and family functioning. The data came from Project RED, which included 1,922 Hispanic students (53?% girls; 86?% were 14?years old; and 84?% were U.S. born) from Southern California. We used data from 9th to 11th grade to test the influence of acculturation-related experiences on depressive symptoms over time. Multi-group structural equation analysis suggested that both family conflict and cohesion were linked with depressive symptoms. Hispanic cultural values were associated with family cohesion and conflict but the strength and direction of these relationships varied across cultural values and gender. For girls and boys, familismo and respeto were associated with higher family cohesion and lower family conflict. Moreover, gender roles were linked with higher family cohesion in girls but not in boys. These results indicate that improving family functioning will be beneficial for boys' and girls' psychological well-being. This may be achieved by promoting familismo and respeto for boys and girls and by promoting traditional gender roles for girls. 相似文献

Acculturation has been associated with numerous health and social outcomes among Hispanic/Latino adolescents. Various self-report
scales have been used to measure acculturation, making comparisons of results across studies difficult. This study administered
several commonly-used acculturation scales to 221 Hispanic/Latino 9th grade students in Los Angeles. Although all of these
scales purport to measure acculturation, the correlations among the scales, and their correlations with language usage measures,
were modest. As expected, higher scores on Hispanic/Latino orientation scales (or lower scores on U.S./White orientation scales)
were associated with higher levels of ethnic identity formation. Results indicate that these acculturation scales may measure
different aspects of the complex phenomenon of acculturation. For example, purely language-based measures shared only small
amounts of variance with more comprehensive measures. Additional research is needed to create and validate acculturation measures
for adolescents.
