Although research consistently suggests that adolescents in single-mother families are at increased risk for depression, the mechanisms that explain this relationship are unclear. In a community sample of adolescents ( N?=?368; ages 12–16; 50?% female; 50?% White) and their mothers (42?% single), adolescents completed measures of depressive symptoms, rumination, and depressogenic inferential style at baseline and two yearly follow-ups. Mothers reported on stressful events that occurred in the child’s life from birth until baseline. Adolescents raised by single mothers, relative to partnered mothers, experienced more childhood stressors and higher rumination levels at 1-year follow-up. Additionally, higher rumination mediated the relationship between single motherhood and greater youth depressive symptoms at the 2-year follow-up. Threat appraisals—individuals’ perceptions of how stressful situations may threaten their well-being—are an important but understudied mechanism that could explain links between peer victimization and adjustment. The goal of the present study was to examine relationships between physical and relational victimization by peers, threats to the self, and aggression, anxiety, and depression to better understand the cognitive evaluations that make youth vulnerable to negative adjustment. The sample comprised two cohorts of African American adolescents ( N = 326; 54 % female; M = 12.1; SD = 1.6) and their maternal caregivers, who participated in three waves of a longitudinal study. Path models revealed significant direct effects from Time 1 relational victimization, but not physical victimization, to Time 2 threat appraisals (i.e., negative self-evaluations and negative evaluations by others), controlling for Time 1 threat appraisals. Significant direct effects were found from Time 2 threats of negative evaluations by others to Time 3 youth-reported aggression, controlling for Time 1 and Time 2 aggression. Significant direct effects also were found from Time 2 threats of negative self-evaluations to T3 youth-reported depression, controlling for Time 1 and Time 2 depression. Overall, findings highlight the need to consider the role of threats to the self in pathways from peer victimization to adjustment and the implications these appraisals have for youth prevention and intervention efforts. 相似文献

This study used a 2-month prospective research design to examine the bi-directional interplay between peer victimization and
social anxiety among adolescents. Participants included 228 adolescents (58% female) in grades 10–12. Three types of peer
victimization were examined: overt (physical aggression or verbal threats), relational (malicious manipulation of a relationship, such as by friendship withdrawal), and reputational (damaging another’s peer relationships, such as through rumor spreading). Adolescents’ self-reported feelings of social anxiety
and peer victimization experiences were assessed at two time points, in November and January of the same school year. Peer
victimization was strongly related to adolescents’ social anxiety, and relational victimization explained additional unique
variance. Moreover, peer victimization was both a predictor and consequence of social anxiety over time, with the most robust
results found for relational victimization. Limited support was obtained for gender as a moderating variable. Findings highlight
the deleterious effects of peer victimization, especially relational victimization, and suggest avenues for future research
and clinical intervention for adolescents experiencing such victimization.

The purpose of this study was to fill up a research gap by examining the relationship of particular daily hassles and specific social support with regard to parent, peer, and teacher relationship to depression and antisocial behavior among early adolescents. Three-hundred and thirty-eight 5th and 6th graders were examined for depression and 360 for antisocial behavior through self-report questionnaires. Findings showed that except for parental support, hassles alone affected the level of maladjustment. Social support had no main effects except for parental support. Early adolescents who perceived high parental support reported less maladjustment. Social support did not moderate daily hassles in emotional and behavioral adjustment. Additionally, hassles with friends and parents were the best predictors of depression whereas hassles with parents were the best predictor of antisocial behavior. These findings suggest that Korean early adolescents were having more daily hassles that contributed to maladjustment than they had social support from significant others. 相似文献

This study examined the factors associated with resistance to peer pressure toward antisocial behaviors among a sample of Mexican-origin adolescents ( n=564) living in a large Southwestern city in the U.S. A model examining the influence of generational status, emotional autonomy from parents, and self-esteem on resistance to peer pressure was tested independently for boys and girls. Gender differences emerged in the factors that influenced resistance to peer pressure. Results indicated that resistance to peer pressure was influenced by generational status and emotional autonomy from parents for both boys and girls. This study examined the cultural and developmental significance of maternal and paternal parenting processes (closeness, support, monitoring, communication, conflict, and peer approval) for measures of anxiety and depression symptoms in adolescents from Hungary, the Netherlands, Switzerland, and the United States ( N=6,935). Across all cultural contexts, measures of maternal and paternal support and conflict were most consistently associated with measures of internalizing behaviors. Few differences were observed in the importance of individual parenting processes for anxiety or depression symptoms across cultures. Additionally, with the exception of maternal conflict for anxiety and depression symptoms and paternal closeness for depression symptoms, none of the parenting process dimensions differed in importance for internalizing behaviors across developmental periods (middle versus late adolescence). The investigation provides evidence of great similarity in developmental processes, both across cultural contexts and developmental periods. 相似文献

Help-negation is expressed behaviorally by the refusal or avoidance of available help and cognitively by the inverse relationship
between self-reported symptoms of psychological distress and help-seeking intentions. The current study examined the association
between suicidal ideation and intentions to seek help from friends, family and professional mental health sources in a sample
of 302 Australian university students. Participants were 77.5% female and aged from 18–25 years old, with 85.4% aged 21 years
or younger. Higher levels of suicidal ideation were related to lower help-seeking intentions for family, friends, and professional
mental health care, and higher intentions to seek help from no one. Moderation effects indicated that higher levels of depressive
symptoms strengthen the help-negating effect of suicidal ideation for seeking help from friends, family and no one. The results
indicate that, even at subclinical levels, suicidal ideation impedes the cognitive help-seeking process at the decision making
stage. The results also highlight the importance of improving our understanding of why young people become reluctant to seek
help as their levels of suicidal ideation and depressive symptoms increase. Raising awareness that the experience of suicidal
ideation and depressive symptoms can promote intentions to avoid help might reduce the help-negation effect when symptoms

Existential anxiety is hypothesized to be a core human issue in a great deal of theoretical and philosophical writing. However, little is known about the emergence of these concerns and their relation to emotional functioning in youth. The purpose of this study was to examine the phenomenon of existential anxiety in a sample of adolescents. Data on existential concerns, identity development and psychological symptoms were collected on a sample of 139 youth in grades 9–12. Results indicated that existential anxiety concerns have a theoretically consistent factor structure, are common among adolescents, and are associated with psychological symptoms, as well as identity issues. Results are discussed with regard to the importance of existential concerns in the lives of youth and the need for additional research.Received PhD from Florida International University. Although the number of students who complete high school continues to rise, dramatic differences in school success remain
across racial/ethnic groups. The current study addressed Hispanic adolescents’ academic performance by investigating the relationships
of parental involvement, culturally responsive teaching, sense of school belonging, and academic self-efficacy and academic
performance. Participants were 478 (51.5% female) Hispanic 7th graders in the US-Mexico borderlands. Based on Bronfenbrenner’s
ecological systems theory, a structural model was tested. Results showed that the proposed model was supported by demonstrating
significant indirect effects of parental involvement, culturally responsive teaching, and sense of school belonging on academic
performance. Furthermore, academic self-efficacy was found to mediate the relationships between parental involvement, culturally
responsive teaching, and sense of school belonging and academic performance. The current study provides a useful psychoecological
model to inform educators and psychologists who seek to meet the needs of Hispanic students. 相似文献

Most adolescents with depressive disorders do not receive any mental health services, even though effective treatments exist. Although research has examined numerous individual-level factors associated with mental health service use among depressed adolescents, less is known about the role of contextual factors. This study examines the relationship between contextual-level socioeconomic status (SES) and clinic-based mental health counseling use among US adolescents with high depressive symptoms in urban and suburban areas. Data from the first two waves of the National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent Health (N = 1,133; 59 % female) were analyzed using multilevel logistic models in which adolescents were nested within counties. After controlling for individual-level predisposing, enabling, and need characteristics, as well as county racial/ethnic composition, county SES was positively associated with clinic-based counseling use among depressed youth. A one standard deviation increase in the county affluence index was associated with 43 % greater odds of receiving any clinical counseling services. Furthermore, the positive relationship between county affluence and clinical counseling use was no longer significant after controlling for the county supply of mental health specialist physicians. The results indicate that county residential context is a key correlate of mental health service use among depressed adolescents, such that those who live in lower SES counties with fewer mental health specialists are less likely to receive treatment. 相似文献

Experiences of depression, anxiety, and peer victimization have each been found to predict one another, and to predict negative outcomes in the domains of school connectedness, social functioning, quality of life, and physical health. However, the common co-occurrence of depression, anxiety, and peer victimization experiences has made it difficult to disentangle their unique roles in these associations. The present study thus sought to characterize the precise nature of the bidirectional relationships between depressive symptoms, anxiety, and victimization over time, and to examine their unique sequelae during the transition from childhood to early adolescence. Longitudinal multi-informant (child-reported, parent-reported, and teacher-reported) data from a nationally representative sample were analyzed using path analysis when the study child was aged 10–11 (n=?4169; Mage?=?10.3; 48.8% female) and aged 12–13 (n=?3956; Mage?=?12.4; 48.2% female). Depressive symptoms, anxiety, and peer victimization had small but significant unique bidirectional relationships. All three constructs also uniquely and prospectively predicted poorer life functioning across all domains examined. These results demonstrate that current interventions should broaden their scope to simultaneously target depression, anxiety, and peer victimization, as each of these experiences independently act as additive risk factors for subsequent negative outcomes. 相似文献

Despite the frequent association between anxiety and somatization, the role of somatic anxiety—a tendency to experience somatic sensations, when anxious—in relationship to persistent somatic complaints has not been addressed previously. This study assessed the predictive role of internalizing psychopathology (anxiety, posttraumatic stress, depression) and somatic anxiety for somatic complaints over a 1-year period in a community sample of urban youth. The Social and Health Assessment, a self-report survey, was administered to 2,524 (mean age = 12.8, 54 % female) American urban adolescents in two consecutive years. There was significant continuity of somatic complaints over 1 year. Girls reported higher levels of somatic complaints and somatic anxiety than boys. All types of internalizing psychopathology significantly predicted somatic complaints over time. Somatic anxiety was associated with somatic complaints over and above the role of internalizing symptoms. Internalizing psychopathology and somatic anxiety should both be considered in the assessment and treatment of youth with persistent somatic complaints. 相似文献

Guided by a social information processing perspective, this study examined the unique and interactive contributions of social
anxiety and two distinct components of empathy, empathic concern and perspective taking, to subsequent relational and overt
aggression in early adolescents. Participants were 485 10- to 14-year old middle school students (54% female; 78% European-American)
involved in two waves of a study with one year between each wave. Hierarchical regression analyses showed that higher levels
of empathic concern were directly associated with decreases in subsequent relational and overt aggression one year later and
buffered the impact of social anxiety on subsequent relational aggression. Although perspective taking did not moderate the
impact of social anxiety on either form of aggression, it was a unique predictor of increased relational aggression one year
later. Findings call for future research to assess both components of empathy separately as they relate to relational and

Depressive symptoms in Latino youth have been related to both culturally-universal and culturally-based stressors. However, few studies have examined the unique contributions of culturally-based stressors above and beyond other types of stressors. Moreover, no past studies with Latinos have examined the role of culturally-based stressors within a hopelessness model of depressive symptoms, a cognitive model with the strongest empirical support in adolescence. The current study examined these issues in a sample of 171 Latino adolescents (7th-10th grades; mean age?=?14; 46?% male). The Latino adolescents were primarily Mexican-American (78?%) and born in the United States (60?%). Students completed measures during a school period on their experiences of parent-child conflict, economic stress, discrimination from peers, and acculturative stress as well as depressive symptoms and attributional style. The results indicated that culturally-based stressors (e.g., acculturative stress and discrimination) predicted greater depressive symptoms even when controlling for culturally-universal stressors (e.g., parent-child conflict, economic stress). Moreover, a negative attributional style moderated the relationship between culturally-universal stressors and depressive symptoms, but this was not the case for culturally-based stressors. Culturally-based stressors play an important role in depressive symptoms among Latino youth. These stressors predicted greater symptomatology even when controlling for other types of stressors and a negative attributional style. These findings suggest that there may be other cognitive risk factors associated with culturally-based stressors. 相似文献

Using a sample of 781 adolescents (ages 13–17, 52.8% male) from a community survey, this study examined gender differences
in the co-occurrence of specific anxiety disorders with substance use in adolescents. The associations between anxiety disorders
and substance use differed according to the particular anxiety disorders and forms of substance use being examined, as well
as by gender. Social phobia was associated with cigarette smoking among boys only. For girls, social phobia appeared to be
negatively associated with drug use. For the other anxiety disorders, the associations with substance use tended to be stronger
among girls. These findings highlight the need to improve clinical recognition of the anxiety disorders and to improve treatment
access for afflicted adolescents. Future studies based on longitudinal data could further elucidate the relationships among
anxiety disorders, gender, and substance use. 相似文献

The present study examined the utility of a stress and coping model of adaptation to a homeless shelter among homeless adolescents. Seventy-eight homeless adolescents were interviewed and completed self-administered scales at Time 1 (day of shelter entry) and Time 2 (day of discharge). The mean duration of stay at the shelter was 7.23 days (SD = 7.01). Predictors included appraisal (threat and self-efficacy), coping resources, and coping strategies (productive, nonproductive, and reference to others coping). Adjustment outcomes were Time 1 measures of global distress, physical health, clinician- and youthworker-rated social adjustment, and externalizing behavior and Time 2 youthworker-rated social adjustment and goal achievement. Results of hierarchical regression analyses indicated that after controlling for the effects of relevant background variables (number of other shelters visited, sexual, emotional, and physical abuse), measures of coping resources, appraisal, and coping strategies evidenced distinct relations with measures of adjustment in ways consistent with the model's predictions with few exceptions. In cross-sectional analyses better Time 1 adjustment was related to reports of higher levels of coping resources, self-efficacy beliefs, and productive coping strategies, and reports of lower levels of threat appraisal and nonproductive coping strategies. Prospective analyses showed a link between reports of higher levels of reference to others coping strategies and greater goal achievement and, unexpectedly, an association between lower self-efficacy beliefs and better Time 2 youthworker-rated social adjustment. Hence, whereas prospective analyses provide only limited support for the use of a stress and coping model in explaining the adjustment of homeless adolescents to a crisis shelter, cross-sectional findings provide stronger support. 相似文献

Everyday interactions with same-racial/ethnic others may confer positive benefits for adolescents, but the meaning of these interactions are likely influenced by individual differences and larger structural contexts. This study examined the situation-level association between contact with same-ethnic others and anxiety symptoms among a diverse sample of 306 racial/ethnic minority adolescents ( Mage = 14 years; 66 % female), based on (1) individual differences in ethnic identity centrality and (2) developmental histories of transitions in diversity between elementary, middle, and high school. The results indicated that at the level of the situation, when adolescents interacted with more same-ethnic others, they reported fewer anxiety symptoms. Further, for adolescents who had experienced a transition in school diversity, the positive benefits of contact with same-ethnic others was only conferred for those who felt that their ethnicity was very important to them. The importance of examining individual differences within larger developmental histories to understand the everyday experiences of ethnic minority adolescents are discussed. 相似文献
