LETTERS
The topic of"dreams" reminds me of a text by the late Chinese writer Shi Tiesheng who was paralyzed when he was 21, in whichhe elaborated on his devotion to sports. He loved track and field the most, more than writing, and his favorite star was Carl Lewis whom, with a strong body and super speed, he regarded as the luckiest man on earth. Shi once thought that he would do anything to have Lewis' physique and vigor in another life, if there were one. But observ- ing the athlete's rise and fall after a doping scandal, he gained fresh understanding of success, happiness and life in general. He said his dream was to have a healthy body, a beautiful soul and life wisdom. While acknowledging that many think one should not be too greedy or ambitious, Shi's overriding belief was that everyone has the right to dream big, and to look forward to the best in the world.  相似文献

Lines of Life
My first experience of standing in a line for public medical care was when I was a baby in my mother's arm. So it was actually she who stood in the line so that I could get the free vaccination for measles and some other diseases. I remember it even after decades because it was painful. The medical worker made two incisions on the arm and a lot of the kids started bawling in shocked protest.  相似文献

Iremember that when I was a child two peonies grew in the courtyard of my house. One was white and the other was pink. As well as tending to them, loosening the soil and bringing them water, I often observed and drew them. I saw how it requires persistence and patience for a peony to survive the harshness of winter and come forth in spring to bring its beauty to the world. From this early interest, my ambition has always been to be a painter specialized in these fascinating flowers. Later when I became an adult and gained more knowledge and experience,  相似文献

The very first time I attempted to negotiate a fulu(service road),I feared for my life. And that was just trying to cross the thing. Having slept off my jetlag, I staggered out of a Beijing hotel and onto the road. It was dark. Unlit bikes flew past in the shadows. A car shot up the fulu in the wrong direction. There were a hundred people marching up the road, and a hundred more scurrying down. It was chaos on the boulevards, and it was scary. My head twisted from left to right and back ag…  相似文献

It was a wild ride for China's economy in 2007.Hanging onto the raging bull was difficult for some and highly profitable for others.Worried that overheating markets could affect the economy,by year's end,the govern- ment had raised interest rates six times and bank reserves 10 times. The macroeconomic slogan shifted from"prudent to tightened"—a signal that inflation,a surging consumer price index and excess liquidity are the main targets of financial regulators in the coming year.Even though there were jit- ters, the overall economic picture was rosy in 2007:GDP growth around 11.5 percent, foreign and domestic investment growth was up,and domestic consumption took a greater role in overall economic development.  相似文献

Shanghai once had its most colorful days in 1930s, when the Bund was a center for entertainment and recreation nicknamed as "ten miles of foreign spectacles". In the early days of the 20th century, the government of Qing Dynasty(1616-1911) was forced to open the ports for foreign trade; Shanghai was then made a commercial port by the foreigners, and a street was constructed between Waibaidu Bridge and Dongjinling Road, named "Bund" or "Waitan" in Chinese. In the following years, buildings appeared in the bund one after another, presenting a wonderful ablaze night scene with lights. The warehouses and factories located in the  相似文献

A Way of Life
The pace and nature of life in traditional Tulou compounds is undergoing major changes it was 7 a.m., but the scene inside the Tulou building, called Bu Yun, was already a hive of activity. One of 46 Fujian Tulou buildings added to the UNESCO World Heritage List this July, Bu Yun in Nanjing County teemed with activity. Children brushed their teeth, women washed clothes, men set out stalls full of souvenirs and others stood chatting in the local dialect. Huang Zhixiong, who was born and raised in the three-floor square building, was among the crowd. He has been running a tourist-transportation business for six years, making a living by taking tourists on motorcycle tours of the scattered architecture that dots the hills in the south and west of Fujian Province.  相似文献

ON a stormy night so severe that dozens of trees were knocked down in the innerBeijing suburb of Dongzhimen, local girl Zhang Jing braved the harsh weather and empty streets to make her way to a cinema. Inside Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix was playing on the silver screen. "HP fans" with Zhang Jing's dedication are by no means rare in China. Despite hitting local screens a month behind the global release date, enjoying only limited publicity and suffering from a small number of film prints in circulation, Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix was a certified blockbuster in China, grossing over RMB 110 million in just nine days.  相似文献
