In the Chinese language, "climbing up a mountain of daggers and diving into a sea of flames" is a metaphor for doing something that is incredibly dangerous. For people of the Lisu ethnic group in southwest China's Yunnan Province, however, this is no literary expression, but something they can do for real. They even have a special festival, the Daogan Festival (literally meaning "the Blade and Fire Day"), to display this extraordinary skill.  相似文献

Code-switching in the English as a foreign language(EFL) classroom is a disputable subject in the academic area. There are two main schools of thought toward English-Chinese code-switching. One holds an opinion that the code switching as a barrier for the first language may produce interference and negative transfer, while another argues code-switching as a facilitator for the first language may provide the most effective meanings of learning. The focus of the argument is to use or not use the mother tongue. In this paper, an attempt has been made to investigate whether it is necessary to use code-switching in the college English class from the perspective of English learners. By doing so, a questionnaire has been made to reveal the expectations of students with different English proficiency toward code-switching. And then the paper has provided suggestions on the way of using appropriate code-switching strategies in class to facilitate EFL learning.  相似文献

EMPATHY," Amy Gendler said to her mostly American companions in a social group one Sunday this spring, "represents one of the most significant developmental challenges my Chinese design students face. Being able to put yourself in another person's shoes is key to being a good designer." Of the social import of the students' success, she is also clear, "It is imperative that China thinks about design in a new way." By that she means embrace strategic, research-based, problem-solving approaches, because "Design is not about making beautiful things; it may not even be about things. It's about strategic solutions for sustainability. China needs to think of it this way, and this way now."  相似文献

The removal of facial hair by threading is a common practice among the Miao women of western Hunan. It is a coming-of-age ritual for Miao girls and a popular beauty treatment for Miao women. The practice started way back in history and employs a simple technique. An experienced practitioner can do it on her own face using just a hemp thread. She takes one end of a thread in her one hand holds the other between her teeth. The middle part of the thread is looped between the thumb and forefinger of the right hand, and this is rolled over the face. By opening and closing her hand, she alternately loosens and tightens the loop, twisting away the fine hair from the face and neck. Next she focuses on the the eyebrows, using the thread to trim the eyebrows into the desired shape, perhaps crescent moon or willow leaf. After threading, the skin becomes clean and clear. Studies show that twisting the fine hair off helps to smooth the skin, because subsequent regrowth is finer. Constant depilation make the follicles shrink, producing an enduringly beautiful skin.  相似文献
