Economic forces and anti-immigrant attitudes in Western Europe: a paradox in search of an explanation

Greater economic hardship is widely conceived as conducive to higher levels of majority hostility towards minority groups. Research in the classical social-psychological tradition as well as data on political trends support such a view. However, more recent survey and experimental findings cast doubt on the economic deprivation model of out-group hostility. O'Connell examines responses to sections of the European Social Survey that suggest that economic deprivation is still linked to out-group hostility, and argues that this position is contradicted by recent trends in anti-immigrant politics: electoral support for far-right parties has been more prevalent in wealthier and more materially secure societies than in poorer ones. He offers an explanation for this apparent paradox, suggesting that increased economic security has both direct and indirect effects on a society, and that these effects run counter to each other. As economic scarcity decreases, concerns over economic rivalry decline but new concerns related to integration emerge, particularly as the society becomes more attractive to migrants.

我国人口预期寿命的影响因素分析

本文选择人口平均预期寿命、婴儿死亡率作为因变量,在宏观层面上分析影响人口健康水平的因素,并对各因素的作用大小与机制进行讨论。总地来看,经济、教育、医疗、公共卫生等因素对人口健康水平起着大小不同的作用,并且表现出较强的城乡差别。在城镇地区,除了经济发展水平之外,是医疗卫生服务资源的利用水平能够更加直接和显著地影响人口健康水平,而不是供给水平。在乡村地区,提升健康水平的有效选择是：积极有效地改善乡村地区公共卫生设施,提高乡村人口安全饮水的比例;大力促进乡村地区人口的教育水平;提高人们对医疗卫生服务资源的利用水平。     

大学生体育锻炼态度现状及影响体育锻炼因素的调查研究

体育态度会影响人的锻炼行为。本文通过文献资料、问卷调查、数量统计等方法对天津市4所大学252名大学生的体育锻炼态度及影响因素进行了调查。研究结果表明,大学生体育锻炼态度总体上较积极,不同性别、不同年级的大学生在体育锻炼态度上存在差异;促进大学生身体锻炼的因素有身体因素、心理因素、学习方面因素、交流方面因素、习惯因素,阻碍身体锻炼的因素有客观和主观因素。

旅游业促进旅游地快速发展的同时,也给旅游地带来了诸多问题,社区参与逐渐成为其关注对象。以一个旅游开发比较成功的旅游点——喀纳斯旅游风景区为例,通过性别、年龄、教育、收入、地理位置来分析居民对旅游态度的影响感知,重点分析、探讨了社区居民积极的旅游感知态度形成的影响因素,旅游开发对社区经济、社会、文化等方面的影响。试图通过实证研究,对社区居民积极、正面旅游感知态度进行理论探讨。

Biotechnology, rather than being defined as a distinct industry like steelmaking or shipbuilding, is instead a scientific knowledge base—a rapidly evolving technology—that has economically valuable applications in such diverse industries as pharmaceuticals, medical diagnostics, agriculture, bioenvironmental remediation, and chemical processing. Biotechnology has captured the imagination of ambitious scientific investigators and investors seeking high rates of return, as well as state economic development officials who hope to anchor the industry in their locality and reap the industry's economic and employment rewards. Biotech is still at an early stage of its development, and there are many competing hypotheses about its future development. Most importantly, biotechnology involves the commercialization of science resources in which the federal and state governments have made substantial investment. One key question is how to leverage this investment for future economic growth. This article explores the policy issue related to the commercialization of biotechnology, its role as an engine of economic development, and the appropriate public policy response.     

Economic vulnerability and economic voting in 14 OECD countries

The economic voting literature shows that good economic performance bolsters the electoral prospects of incumbents. However, disagreement persists as to whether voters in vulnerable economic conditions are more likely to engage in economic voting. It is argued in this article that a crucial factor in explaining individual‐level variation in economic voting is the degree of exposure to economic risks, because risk exposure affects the saliency of the economy in voting decisions. In particular, the focus is on job insecurity and employability as key determinants of economic voting patterns. The article hypothesises that the extent of economic voting is greater in voters who are more vulnerable to unemployment and less employable in case of job loss. Support for these hypotheses is found in a test with a dataset that combines survey data on incumbent support with occupational unemployment rates and other measures of exposure to economic risks.
