Television audiences around the country were shocked on November 21,2009, when national broadcaster China Central Television showed clips of two families violently fighting lawenforcement officials who were evicting them from their homes. The first incident being broadcast happened in June 2008, when Pan Rong and her husband stood on the roof of their four-story house to confront a demolition crew that consisted of police officers, firefighters and a bulldozer. Consumer perceptions of the Chinese film industry

Going to the movies is a popular pastime in China. China Daily re cently cited a survey by the China Film Association in which forty per cent of participants listed going to the cinema as their first choice entertainment. Seeing a film came ahead of surfing the internet andwatching TV among those surveyed in big cities such as Beijing and Shanghai. The 184-day 2010 World Expo in Shanghai came to an end with a spectacular closing ceremony on the evening of October 31,which was attended by a host of world leaders. The first Expo staged in a developing country in the event's 159-year history,the Expo in Shanghai attracted 246 participating countries and international organizations and 73 million visitors.Both figures are Expo records.     

IMAGE IMPROVEMENT

After five years of development, the Shanghai Cooperation Organization says it has become a player in maintaining regional security and promoting economic cooperation. On June 15, leaders of SCO member countries will gather in Shanghai, birthplace of the SCO, to discuss the future development of the organization. SCO Secretary General Zhang Deguang fielded questions from reporters on the organization's development and international image at a press conference on June 6 in Beijing. June 14-15, 2001-The first Shanghai Cooperation Organization-(SCO) summit is held in Shanghai, involving the presidents of China, Russia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan. The six leaders issued a joint statement that announced Uzbekistan's participation in the "Shanghai Five," the launch of the SCO and the Shanghai treaty to crack down on terrorism, separatism and extremism.     

New Infrastructure,New Engine

正Shanghai unveils three-year construction plan for new infrastructure Shanghai will carry out 48 key projects in the field of new infrastructure in the next three years with a total investment of 270 billion yuan ($38.14 billion), according to the action plan on promoting new infrastructure construction (2020-22) issued by the Shanghai Municipal Government. The35-point plan aims at turning Shanghai into a leading city in the world in terms of scale and innovation capacity of new infrastructure by the end of 2022.
