华侨华人社团在东南亚及印度尼西亚(以下简称印尼)华人社会发展史上都具有重要的历史地位与作用,它是华侨华人报刊杂志、华文学校及华人企业经贸网络赖以生存的重要支柱之一.早在1900年,印尼华侨华人正式成立了近代印尼第一个华侨华人社团——巴城中华会馆.

民间信仰是一种植根于人民群众中的、古老而又特殊的宗教文化现象。早期华侨出国,不仅给泰国人民带去先进的生产工具和耕作技术,而且也把中华民族的民间信仰等优秀传统文化传播到泰国。于是寺庙便随着华侨的足迹遍布到泰国各地,并与会馆、学校构成了泰国华侨社会的三大特征。华侨华人民间信仰与泰国当地民族的其他宗教信仰通过长期的接触,互相影响,互相渗透以后,必然会产生一种新的信仰。但是,它必须经过一个漫长的形成发展过程。

柬埔寨出现华文教育热

前不久,我飞抵柬埔寨首都金边市.走出机舱,一股热浪扑面袭来.而当我在柬埔寨走访了几天后发现,这里还有一个最热闹的现象:柬埔寨的华文教育事业如雨后春笋一般,生机勃发.在金边市,我访问了全柬华侨华人最高领导机构——柬华理事总会,还有潮州会馆、广肇会馆、客属会馆、海南会馆和福建同乡会,得知他们有一个共同点:都以发展华文教育作为主要任务.在总会和各会馆中,分别设立有文教处和文教组,负责组织实施华文教育的恢复和发展工作.在我所接触的华侨华人中,凡经济富裕的都选择教学质量高的华文学校让子女读书,而家庭贫困的也会千方百计地让子女读上华文学校.

Most of the pages are devoted to a detailed comparison between the old generation and the young generation of American China Watchers regarding to their background, education, and views over China.
