Diverse Xinjiang
Xinjiang is China's largest provincial-level administrative region. Covering an area of 1.6 million square kilometers, there are eight countries along its 5,600-kilometer border. According to archaeological findings, human habitation began here in the Neolithic Age. Xinjiang was a main aspect of the Old Silk Road that traversed the region 2,000 years ago, and instrumental in linking the East and West. Migration from Central Asia and intermarriage brought about complex ethnic relationships culminating in the 13 ethnic groups that today inhabit this region of diverse culture and topography.  相似文献

Born and growing up in Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, I felt a sense of unfairness between the Han people like me and the ethnic minority groups living there. Many of my classmates from the ethnic minorities had at least one sibling, but most of the Hans didn't. Though the one-child policy prevailed at that time, the ethnic minorities were exempted.  相似文献

Amagic Jada stone is an extremely rare calculus,or abnormal calcification, found only in one among ten thousand horse skulls. In days of old, Jadas were used to conjure up rain by ethnic peoples living in Altai, in Xinjiang, a region of northwest China To his surprise, the author found that the Pingpu people of Taiwan have a similar “conjuring rain culture.” In addition, other cultural relics show similarities between the two places. Such a coincidence leads to the author to speculate - could there be an ancient blood relationship between the inhabitants of Xinjiang in northwest China and Taiwan in southeast China-two communities separated by such a vast distance?  相似文献

Nature's greatest splendors are often secreted in the remotest of spots. This is certainly true of Kanas Lake, deep in the Altay Mountains of northern Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region. This area of sublime, and as yet unsullied, natural beauty is home to 2,000 people of the Tuwa ethnic minority. The ancestry of these herder-hunters is unclear. Certain anthropologists believe that they are descended from Genghis Khan's "Mongol hordes" that swept through on their 13th century rampage of Central Asia and Europe. Others argue that they are the posterity of Siberian migrants, and cousins to the Tuvan people of Russia.  相似文献
