A Cultural Enclave

Xuanwu District,located in the southwest of Beijing,boasts a history as long as the city itself.It has bred Xuannan(literally south of Xuanwu Gate)Cuhure,which conveys colorful historical meanings. Beijing's culture can be broadly divided into three levels:royal,scholarly anti civilian. Xuannan Culture includes teatures of all three levels. The Altar of the God of Agricuhure,situated in Xuanwu District,was founded in 1420.     

Jiangxinzhou-Emerald on the Yangtze River

Jiangxinzhou, green as jade and shaped like a green plum, is inlaid on the Yangtze River, in the western part of Jianye District in Nanjing, Jiangsu Province. It is only 6 kilometers away from Xinjiekou, the downtown commercial center, and is separated from the new modern city, the New District of Hexi in Nanjing, with a strip of water. The river with a distant source and long stream is just like the arms of a mother to embrace the green island of 15 kilometers and to nourish the 12,000 residents at the island.

Beijing Ox Street in the Eyes of Muslims

Around a 1,000-year-old mosque in Niu Jie (Ox Street) in the Xuanwu District in southern Beijing, there live some 12,000 Muslims, generation after generation. They are the witnesses to the vicissitudes of life in this age-old street. At five o'clock in the morning, 77-year-old man, Wang Changhe, is already up and on his way to the Ox Street Mosque some hundred meters from his home. It was very quiet at this time of day at this gray-walled and green-tiled mosque, as few people showed up. Minutes later, people began to stream in for the six-o'clock service. It is said that more than 200 people show up at the daily service and more at al-Djuma on Friday.     

Discovering a Niche in Old Beijing

EVERY place, large or small, has its own customs or cultural quirks that locals feel proud of. This is especially true in the case of Wang Gang, head of Xuanwu District in Beijing. He told me proudly that Xuanwu boasts two of Beijing＇s three historic private residences that actually house their very own theaters. They are Huguang and Anhui Guild Halls. The third is Prince Gong＇s Mansion in Xicheng District.     

Teaching at Nanjing Union Theological Seminary

On a back lane in the bustling Xinjiekou District of the city center of Nanjing is a quiet almost hidden "oasis", the campus of Nanjing Union Theological Seminary. This is temporary home to nearly two hundred students preparing for leadership and teaching for the Chinese Protestant Church. Union Theological Seminary (UTS) Nanjing is the national seminary of the China Christian Council. It has 27 fulltime Chinese teaching staff. The addition of a few foreign teachers is a new experiment. The hope seems to be that the foreign teachers will bring different experiences, perspectives and teaching methodologies into the faculty mix. The first two foreign faculty members taught at UTS in the 2001-02 year.

English Service in St. Paul’s Church,Nanjing

ST. Paul's Church was established in 1923 as the first official Christian church in Nanjing, Jiangsu Province. A gothic building situated on South Taiping Road, the small church was designed to reflect the style of European churches in rural areas. Every Sunday at 10:30am, there is an English service in the small hall of St. Paul's Church. Professors from Nanjing University organize the activity, and it is attended by Nanjing's foreign community, local English-speaking Christians as well as students who come to study English.     

A Decade of Complete Change in a Muslim Community

Talking about changes in the Muslim-inhabited Niu Jie Street of Beijing,every mem- ber of the community would be all smiles."Everything has changed;the mosque,the streetscape and the people,too"they would say. Niu Jie or Ox Street is situated in the Xuanwu District in the southern part of Beijing.The 1.44 square kilometer area is inhabited by 54,000 people,mostly of Muslims.

Nanjing, History＇s Great Survivor

PERHAPS no other city in China suffered more during the Second World War than Nanjing. Although traditionally protected by the Yangtze River and Zijin Mountain to its north and east, the city quickly fell to Japanese invaders in 1937, with tragic consequences. In what became known as the ＂Rape of Nanjing,＂ 330,000 men, women and children were systematically and brutally murdered by rampaging Japanese soldiers in a six-week-long orgy of violence.

IN July 2007, Hu Jiandang packed a small suitcase and headed for the town of Panggezhuang in Daxing District on the southern outskirts of Beijing - a decision that, as it turned out, may affect his prosperity for the rest of his life. Rising Above Past Bitterness

JAPANESE products and billboards advertising them, are seen everywhere in China's larger cities, other than Nanjing that is. Whilst in Nanjing recently I did see the odd Lexus and Mazda on the city's tree-shaded roads, and one or two books by Japanese writer Haruki Murakami at the Xinhua Book Store by Xuanwu Lake. There were also large amounts of Japanese-brand digital products on sale at the downtown shopping center, but all were marked "Made in China."     

The Door to the Christian World

THE Nanjing Union Theological Seminary (Nanjing Union) is in an obscure alley in the busiest part of Nanjing-downtown Xinjiekou. It brings to mind the Chinese philosophical paradox-that the highest state of reclusion may be found within the densest urban jungle. Nanjing was formerly the political and economic center of southern China, and served as capital for 10 dynasties. Between 1912 and 1949 it was the capital of the Republic of China. The Nanjing Union Theological Seminary is the highest Christian academy in China. It was founded in 1952 by combining 12 of East China's Christian seminaries. "The in-orbit development of the seminary did not occur until 1981, when it resumed enrolment,"says 90-year-old Professor Chen Zemin, former vice president of the seminary. Since 1981, the Nanjing Union has graduated 3,000 students. A full 80 percent of them work in churches, Christian organizations and seminaries across the country, forming the backbone of the Chinese Christian community. Eighty percent of the teaching staff at Chinese Christian seminaries graduated from the Nanjing Union.
