It seems, with the current state of technolog-ical advances and continual development of infrastructure, that almost every corner of the world is now accessible by some means of transport. Air travel means that a journey that would have previously taken weeks is now shortened to a matter of hours. For me to reach China from my home in the middle of the United States would have seemed borderline impossible without flying. Now, however, it takes less than 24 hours from leaving my house in the mountains of Colorado to walking in the front door of my urban residence in Beijing. However, while convenience may abound, the enchantment of such expedited travel is largely left wanting.

When a young man takes a fancy to a young woman, he sends a matchmaker to sound out her family. After getting approval from the head of the family, the husband-to-be goes to his fiancé＇s home to organize an engagement banquet and consults to fix the date of the wedding. At the appointed time he entertains his fiancé＇s relatives and friends at her home, and prepares the betrothal gifts. During the whole engagement process, the bride-to-be is supposed to keep out of public view, hiding away in her room or at the home of a relative.

Professor Tadayo Watabe is a Japanese expert on the origin and development of rice culture. In his book The Rice Road, Professor Watabe argued that an arc-like area extending from South China to the Assam plain in India is likely to be thestarting point of ＂The Rice Road,＂ and the source of the world＇s rice civilizations. "As many tourists from China and abroad learn about the Miao ethnic culture,we've seen a sudden boom in tourism in the past few years in our village," said Li with a smile.The flourishing tourist industry boosted the local service sector and revived the traditional Miao culture,bringing a host of benefits to local villagers like Li.     

A Vibrant Ancient City

LIJIANG is a small city on the Yunnan-Guizhou Plateau in southern China with an 800-year history. Word of its ancient language and music, and unique natural scenery has spread over the decades, and Lijiang is now known throughout the world. It was added to UNESCO's World Cultural Heritage List in 1997, and is one of the ten most favored destinations for Chinese tourists.
