On a back lane in the bustling Xinjiekou District of the city center of Nanjing is a quiet almost hidden "oasis", the campus of Nanjing Union Theological Seminary. This is temporary home to nearly two hundred students preparing for leadership and teaching for the Chinese Protestant Church. Union Theological Seminary (UTS) Nanjing is the national seminary of the China Christian Council. It has 27 fulltime Chinese teaching staff. The addition of a few foreign teachers is a new experiment. The hope seems to be that the foreign teachers will bring different experiences, perspectives and teaching methodologies into the faculty mix. The first two foreign faculty members taught at UTS in the 2001-02 year.  相似文献

THE Nanjing Union Theological Seminary (Nanjing Union) is in an obscure alley in the busiest part of Nanjing-downtown Xinjiekou. It brings to mind the Chinese philosophical paradox-that the highest state of reclusion may be found within the densest urban jungle. Nanjing was formerly the political and economic center of southern China, and served as capital for 10 dynasties. Between 1912 and 1949 it was the capital of the Republic of China. The Nanjing Union Theological Seminary is the highest Christian academy in China. It was founded in 1952 by combining 12 of East China's Christian seminaries. "The in-orbit development of the seminary did not occur until 1981, when it resumed enrolment,"says 90-year-old Professor Chen Zemin, former vice president of the seminary. Since 1981, the Nanjing Union has graduated 3,000 students. A full 80 percent of them work in churches, Christian organizations and seminaries across the country, forming the backbone of the Chinese Christian community. Eighty percent of the teaching staff at Chinese Christian seminaries graduated from the Nanjing Union.  相似文献

CLASSIC foreign literature is big business in presentday China, with countless editions by small publishing houses competing with versions released by long-established state publishing firms. Literature from overseas is nothing new in China; late Qing Dynasty scholar Lin Shu (1852-1924) published 222 Chinese versions of foreign works in his lifetime, including 160 novels. Lin was the first to publish a local translation of a classic Western novel, with the release of The Lady of the Camellias in 1900. His other translations included works by famous novelists such as Charles Dickens and English playwright William Shakespeare. Lin had to rely on oral translations of others, however, as he did not understand foreign languages himself.  相似文献

Code-switching in the English as a foreign language(EFL) classroom is a disputable subject in the academic area. There are two main schools of thought toward English-Chinese code-switching. One holds an opinion that the code switching as a barrier for the first language may produce interference and negative transfer, while another argues code-switching as a facilitator for the first language may provide the most effective meanings of learning. The focus of the argument is to use or not use the mother tongue. In this paper, an attempt has been made to investigate whether it is necessary to use code-switching in the college English class from the perspective of English learners. By doing so, a questionnaire has been made to reveal the expectations of students with different English proficiency toward code-switching. And then the paper has provided suggestions on the way of using appropriate code-switching strategies in class to facilitate EFL learning.  相似文献

The Idea of Home
AS an old saying goes, "Home is where the heart is." So even if your home goes through changes, as long as there is love it will be there. I was born in a very small village with only a few households along the coastal area of northern Jiangsu Province, at the end of 1969. Over the 40 years of my life I have experienced many changes, moving from deep in the countryside, to a larger village, then a small town and finally a city, eventually settling down in Beijing.  相似文献

The most common job amongst expats in Beijing,by far,is teaching English.Whether it is a full-time occupation or a way to earn some extra cash alongside studies or other work, many members of the expat community have experience working as teachers. A seemingly insatiable demand for English speakers to teach adults as well as children to speak the lingua franca of the international business world has produced an array of language centers and schools of highly varying degrees of reliability. All Chinese people learn basic English in school, yet the general level of oral English remains poor and is often restricted to a handful of words (though the younger generations are getting much better).English classes once put heavy emphasis on the written form, but over the past decade more attention has been paid to speaking skills as China's youth look for opportunities to study and work abroad.  相似文献

Jiangxinzhou, green as jade and shaped like a green plum, is inlaid on the Yangtze River, in the western part of Jianye District in Nanjing, Jiangsu Province. It is only 6 kilometers away from Xinjiekou, the downtown commercial center, and is separated from the new modern city, the New District of Hexi in Nanjing, with a strip of water. The river with a distant source and long stream is just like the arms of a mother to embrace the green island of 15 kilometers and to nourish the 12,000 residents at the island.  相似文献

ON February 27, 2014 the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress passed a decision on a memo-rial day to honor victims of the Nanjing Massacre. The move is in response to a strong call from the Chinese people for a national salute to the victims and is also in line with international norms. The memorial day, as remembrance of a hor- rifle episode in China's history, is bound to have a global impact.  相似文献

ZHANG Xing is irrevocably committed to pottery. This 37-year-old artist still gets extremely excited when he recalls completing his first piece of pottery. "The clay I use in pottery, even for making something as small as a button, is as remarkable to me now as it was when I was a boy, and made my first miniature clay figurine," he enthused. "After being taken out of the kiln it is always strikingly vivid, after adding just a few colors before it is fired, as if it had a life of its own."Af…  相似文献

While traditional dances still abound in China at academies and social clubs, there is more to dance in the Middle Kingdom these days than fans and acrobatics. The first official modern dance company was founded in South China's Guangdong province in 1992. Since then, a small number of other government-approved as well as independent companies have come about, while members from the original company have spread throughout China and to such countries as Germany, Japan and the United States.  相似文献

Nanjing is located in the developed economic delta as a central city in the mid-lower reaches of the Yangtze River. The municipality made a decision on rapidly developing its urban forest project. Chinaweek reporter had an interview with Mr Sheng Jinlong, one of Nanjing's mayors, to talk something about what readers both at home and abroad are much more concerned. Reporter: Building Nanjing into a green city is a system of ecological project that will serve the present and benefit the future. First of all, I'd like to ask a question about the historical background by taking such a great measure.  相似文献
