The development of the black blow fly, Phormia regina (Meigen).

The black blow fly, Phormia regina (Meigen) is a primary species commonly utilized to indicate a postmortem interval, or more appropriately a "time since colonization". Due to the importance of this species as a secondary myiasis producer in livestock operations, and more recently as a time since death indicator in the field of forensic entomology, a considerable amount of data on its growth and development has been generated. However, the developmental time as reported by these studies varies greatly, and current more detailed data is needed for use in medicocriminal entomology. Hourly developmental data is presented under constant temperatures of 10, 15, 20, 25, 30, 35 and 40 degrees C, and cyclic temperatures of 10-15, 15-25, 25-35 and 35-45 degrees C. This study is in agreement with the results reported by Kamal [Comparative study of thirteen species of sarcosaprophagous Calliphoridae and Sarcophagidae (Diptera). I. Bionomics, Ann. Entomol. Soc. Am. 51 (1958) 261] and Melvin [Incubation period of eggs of certain musciod flies at different constant temperatures, Ann. Entomol. Soc. Am. 27 (1934) 406] only at temperatures of 25 degrees C and below. Bishopp [Flies which cause myiasis in man and animals: some aspects of the problem, J. Econ. Entomol. 8 (1915) 317] reported a shorter developmental duration for larval stages than what was produced with our laboratory rearings.

This document amends the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) adjudication regulations concerning the type of evidence required to establish service connection for post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). This amendment implements a decision by the United States Court of Veterans Appeals (the Court) which stated that current regulations do not adequately reflect the governing statute.     

Y-chromosome polymorphism data in Majorcan, Minorcan and Valencian populations (eastern Spain).

Frequency data of the six STRs: (1) DYS19; (2) DYS389I; (3) DYS389II; (4) DYS390; (5) DYS391 and (6) DYS393, and the DYS287 polymorphism (YAP) were determined in a sample of 117 unrelated males from three eastern Spanish populations: 53 from Majorca, 40 from Minorca and 24 from Valencia.

第四章司法鉴定制度 第一节司法鉴定制度的概念与分析 司法鉴定制度从狭义上讲,仅指进行鉴定的程序制度;从广义上讲还应包括,作为诉讼证明制度一部分,对司法鉴定结论进行审查和运用的制度.前者是对鉴定活动而言的规则,后者是对证明而言的规则.这些规则的首要目的就是保证鉴定结论的客观真实性. 司法鉴定的专门性、司法鉴定结论失真的隐蔽性不仅使鉴定本身只能由专门的鉴定人员来完成,而且在运用司法鉴定结论的诉讼证明活动中对鉴定结论的审查也只能由具有相关学科专门知识的人员来完成.因此,司法鉴定制度不仅要对鉴定活动进行规范,而且要以运用鉴定结论的证明活动进行规范.本文所称司法鉴定制度为广义的概念. 目前对司法鉴定制度的研究成果主要集中在司法鉴定体制、鉴定人、鉴定的程序制度和鉴定标准化方面.应当说这已经奠定了司法鉴定的基本理论框架,但从总体上讲,还不够深入,值得进一步探讨. 第二节外国司法鉴定制度分析 与法系的划分相似,由于社会、历史背景不同,各国的司法鉴定制度大体上也可以分为两类.一是德国、日本、前苏联以及我国台湾地区的司法鉴定制度,即大陆法系的司法鉴定制度;二是英国、美国以及英联邦国家的司法鉴定制度,即英美法系的司法鉴定制度.两大法系之间的司法鉴定制度差别甚大,而法系内部各国的司法鉴定制度也有许多不同.限于篇幅,这里不再细分而一并讨论.

War & Society,Centeno, Miguel A. and Elaine Enriquez. (Cambridge,UK: Polity Press, 2016).

A bumper sticker on many cars in college and university parking lots proclaims: “WAR IS NOT THE ANSWER.” Most American students and faculty spend their entire time at university without thinking about war, except that they want to avoid it at all cost. Miguel Centeno, the Musgrave Professor of Sociology and International Affairs at Princeton University, and Elaine Enriquez, a research fellow also at Princeton, argue that war has been a normal part of human existence since time immemorial and that it deserves to be studied as a sociopolitical phenomenon in its own right. The authors employ a longue durée comparative approach to demonstrate how war has been responsible for some of humankind’s fundamental institutions and practices, and thus must not be condemned as immoral, irrational, stupid, or evil. War has a history of its own that deserves serious study.     

Acallosal brain in sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS).

A definitive explanation of "crib" or "cot" death remains unknown. An unusual incidental autopsy finding of agenesis of the corpus callosum in a case presenting as "near miss" sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS) is discussed. Hitherto, only a single case associated with SIDS has been reported in the literature. The condition may be easily missed outside the interest in neuropathology.     

Technical note: latent fingermarks, colloidal gold and multimetal deposition (MMD). Optimisation of the method

Operational details and optimisation of the colloidal gold or multimetal deposition technique (MMD) for the detection of latent fingermarks on non porous and porous surfaces demonstrate the power of the method. Control of particulate size, pH, reagent, handling are shown to be essential. A difficult case example illustrates the potential of MMD.     

Genetic variation at six STR loci (HUMTH01, HUMTPOX, HUMCSF1PO, HUMF13A01, HUMFES/FPS, HUMVWFA31) in Aragon (north Spain).

The STR loci HUMTH01, HUMPTPOX, HUMCSF1PO, HUMF13A01, HUMFES/FPS and HUMVWFA31 are widely used in forensic casework analyses and population data are necessary to estimate the frequency of a DNA profile. This paper presents the results of a survey aimed to investigate the allele frequency distribution of these loci in an important Spanish population (Aragon, North Spain). Statistical analysis to determine whether allele frequencies were in Hardy-Weinberg Equilibrium was carried out and also to obtain some parameters of medico-legal interest. There was no evidence of association between the alleles of the loci. The Aragonese sample does not differ substantially from other Caucasian populations.
