The authors consider the problems of medicolegal assessment of injuries which developed in cases of foreign bodies getting into the organs of the abdominal cavity during the operations.

The question can be answered with scientific reasoning only after the genitals of the suspected are examined.     

Determination of disulfoton and its metabolites in the body fluids of a Di-Syston intoxication case

Disulfoton and its metabolites, two sulfoxides and two sulfones, in the body fluids of a patient who had ingested Di-Syston were analyzed by FPD-GC and GC/MS. After the chemicals in the extract (Fraction 1) obtained by Extrelut column extraction were analyzed, disulfoton and sulfoxides in Fraction 1 were oxidized into sulfones. The sulfones in the extract (Fraction 2) obtained by Extrelut column extraction were analyzed and the estimated concentrations of metabolite were calculated. The concentrations of disulfoton and the sum of the metabolites in the blood collected on admission were 0.093 nmol/g (25.4 ng/g) and 4.92 nmol/g (corresponding to 1.35 micrograms/g of disulfoton), respectively. These concentrations appear to indicate a severe level of disulfoton intoxication.     

Postmortem changes in resistivity of the anterior abdominal wall during the early postmortem period in rats

An accurate and reproducible technique was employed for the determination of the resistivity of excised portions of the anterior abdominal wall of rats. Resistivity decreased linearly (r = −0.93; P < 0.001) from 1438 ± 131 Ω · cm, immediately following death, to 360 ± 144 Ω · cm at a postmortem interval of 36 h. These changes are believed to reflect the morphological and/or chemical changes which occur at the cellular level during the early postmortem period.

A rare suicidal case of a ten-year-old child stabbing himself in the throat

A rare case is reported of a ten-year-old boy who committed suicide by stabbing himself in the throat with a pointed knife. Possibility of an accidental injury was excluded by the autopsy findings; suspicion of a homicide by his father was cleared through the deposition of his sister. The reason of suicide was attributed directly to his father's severe scolding and indirectly to his mother's death two years before.     

A fatal case of cocaine poisoning in a body packer

A 27-year-old man was carrying in his digestive tract 99 packages each containing about 10 g of a 86% cocaine powder. The courier died by acute cocaine intoxication due to inflation and rupture of four packages during a flight from Bogotá to Rome. At the autopsy, the external examination was unremarkable. The internal examination showed edema and generalized congestion of the organs. Toxicological analyses were performed by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry after solid phase extraction using Bond Elut Certify columns and derivatization with BSTFA/TMCS. High levels of cocaine and benzoylecgonine were found in blood (4.0 microg/mL and 17.0 microg/mL), urine (152.0 microg/mL and 512.0 microg/mL), bile (99.8 microg/mL and 54.0 microg/mL), vitreous humor (7.1 microg/mL and 5.8 microg/mL), brain (7.5 microg/mL and 3.5 microg/mL), and hair (55.5 ng/mg and 27.7 ng/mg). The presence of the cocaine and its metabolite in the hair suggested that the man was a cocaine user.     

A rare mutation in the amelogenin gene and its potential investigative ramifications

Over the past few years, the Australian forensic science community has adopted a common methodology and technology in the application of DNA profiling for investigative and forensic purposes. The ultimate objective of this initiative is the establishment of a national DNA database similar to that used in the UK. An integral part of this methodology is the use of "Profiler Plus," a nonaplex of STRs combined with amelogenin, a locus utilized for sex determination. This paper reports the results from a case where a mutation in the annealing region of the amelogenin primers appears to have resulted in the failure to amplify the amelogenin Y-homolog from a phenotypically normal male. The result was confirmed using two different primer sets that amplify different regions of the amelogenin gene. This situation suggests that the genetic determination of sex based on the amelogenin sequences from specimens of unknown origin, such as crime scene samples, should not be considered infallible.     

n-Butanol in blood as the indicator of how long a dead body lay in water

n-Butanol appears in large quantities in the blood of a drowned person and a correlation exists between its quantity (concentration) and the time the body lay in water. This correlation depends on the temperature of the water but not on whether it is fresh or salt water. The time of death can be fixed within the span of 0-26 days after the event, as we have found out in our research (no longer period has been examined).     

A case of self-inflicted wounding by the introduction of needles through the abdominal wall to induce abortion

The self-inflicted wounding of a 23-year-old woman who introduced needles through the abdominal wall to induce abortion is reported. The woman first came to hospital with metrorrhagia and pain in the right iliac fossa. Initially she refused treatment and went home. Twenty-two hours later she was admitted to hospital after giving birth at home to a male fetus of 610 g. The placenta was expelled in the hospital and a sewing needle was found. Lateral and anteroposterior radiographs revealed 15 such needles in the hypogastric region, most of them at subcutaneous level. The newborn was admitted to the intensive care unit in a generally poor condition, with hypothermia, cyanosis and bradycardia. An X-ray showed a metallic object in the abdominal region which, again, corresponded to a sewing needle. The newborn did not respond to treatment and died 2h after admission.     

Unusual association of three rare alleles and a mismatch in a case of paternity testing

This study reports a paternity case analyzed by the AmpFlSTR Identifiler Kit (AB) in which father and daughter shared three rare alleles for D19S433, D18S51 and TH01 microsatellites. The case also showed an apparent exclusion, due to a mutation at the D3S 1358 microsatellite. Sequencing analysis was performed to assess the size of the rare alleles and to establish their structure, which revealed some molecular variations in regions flanking the motif repeats.     

Characteristics of the injuries to diaphyses of the long tubular bones in case of skew bending

The present experimental study was designed to elucidate specific morphological features emerging from the destruction of diaphyses of long tubular bones undergoing a combined strain/stress impact. It is concluded that the species-specific signs of the injuries to the long tubular bones can be used for the purpose of their differential diagnosis from other types of injuries.
