Why economics needs to be distinguished from physics,and why economists need to talk to physicists: a response to Foster and Holleman

Foster and Holleman argue that the systems ecologist H.T. Odum offered a valid theoretical framework for conceptualizing ecologically unequal exchange, and demonstrate its affinity with the Marxian theory of unequal exchange of embodied labour. However, both approaches suffer from the same fundamental confusion of the biophysical and the economic. The affinity between labour and energy theories of the unequal exchange of value was demonstrated by S.C. Lonergan already in 1988, but to thus define asymmetric transfers of biophysical resources in terms of underpaid ‘use values’ is misleading. Foster's recent endorsement of Odum is inconsistent with his earlier rejection of Odum's intellectual ancestor S. Podolinsky. While the ambition to ecologize Marx is laudable, it is in the interests of correct historiography and contemporary environmental justice activism to untangle some of the analytical problems in Foster and Holleman's article. A major problem is their failure to acknowledge the implications of N. Georgescu-Roegen's conceptualization of the relation between economics and thermodynamics.

Adolescent attachment to parents and friends in relation to aspects of self-esteem

This study explored the relative influence of adolescents' perceptions of their attachment relationships with their mothers, fathers, and friends on three measures of self-esteem. The sample consisted of 493 New Zealand adolescents ranging from 13 to 19 years of age. Two dimensions of the attachment relationship were assessed: the utilization of emotional support and proximity, and the quality of affect. The major findings were as follows: utilization of emotional support and proximity from mothers, fathers, and friends was minimally related to overall self-esteem, coping abilities, and social competence. The quality of affect toward mothers and fathers was significantly related only to social competence. These findings suggest that adolescent self-esteem is more strongly associated with the quality of affect toward parents and friends than with the utilization of these target figures for support or proximity. From boomerangs to minefields and catapults: dynamics of trans-local resistance to land-grabs

This paper explores the political processes that activists engaged in contesting land grabbing have triggered to connect claims across borders and to international institutions, regimes and processes. Through a review of cases of land-grab resistance that have led to project cancelation or suspension, I argue that contextual elements of the land grab and shifting geopolitics highlight the need for adaptation and refinement of models of transnational advocacy, historically structured in North–South patterns. For example, while some elements of the boomerang pattern of transnational advocacy are still relevant, changing realities call for new empirically enriched models. To this end, I outline two typologies of political contention that can help us conceptualize multi-scalar interactions between activists to demonstrate the impact of local resistances at larger scales – ‘the catapult effect’ and the ‘minefield effect’. This paper contributes to calls for further theorization to understand how feedback processes between international discourses, meso-politics and conflicts and resistance at local sites of production impact the implementation of contested land deals.

The Right to Do Wrong: Lying to Parents Among Adolescents and Emerging Adults

In this study, 229 high school students and 261 college students evaluated the acceptability of lying to parents under 19 different circumstances where a person's motive for lying differed. Students also indicated the frequency with which they had lied to their parents about diverse issue such as friends, dates, and money. Results indicated that adolescents and emerging adults quite commonly lied to their parents, and that in part they framed lying to parents as a way to assert the right to autonomy. Emerging adults were less accepting of lying and reported less frequent lying, compared to adolescents. Results also showed the association of sex, personality (self-restraint and tolerance of deviance), and family environment (control and cohesion) upon adolescents' and emerging adults' acceptance of lying to parents and lying behavior.     

Adolescent depression and the susceptibility to helplessness

Subjects scoring above and below a sample median on the Beck Depression Inventory were randomly assigned to one of four experimental conditions in which they were exposed to either (1) an unsolvable task accompanied by unavoidable aversive noise, (2) an identical but solvable task whose solution prevented the noise, or conditions designed to control for the effects of (3) the aversiveness of the noise, or (4) possible baseline performance differences between subject groups. The adolescents in the depressed group who were exposed to the unsolvable task showed a significant performance deficit on a subsequent solvable task when compared to their counterparts in the other three conditions. Subjects in the nondepressed group showed no such deficit, suggesting that as level of depressive symptomatology increases, adolescents become more vulnerable to suffering a disruption of active coping (effort, persistence, problem solving) when confronted with uncontrollable events. Freud's adolescence and the prolegomena to psychoanalysis

The adolescence of creative individuals appears retrospectively preparatory. It is a period of apprenticeship permitting ego integrations of new identifications and the amalgamation of attachments from the past with goals for the future. A period of moratorium during which there is seeming inactivity permits the consolidation of new skills and interests. In Sigmund Freud's case, the period of early adolescence (following the onset of puberty) may have provided an opportunity for psychological discoveries through experiments with free association. These insights were repressed in later adolescence and did not reach fruition until subsequent maturity of the ego had taken place. It is suggested that early adolescence permits a prepatterning for later creative activity and the nascent contents are an anlage for the subsequent creativity.Received his M.D. from University of Toronto. Feminist theory and the challenge to knowledges

This paper explores the phallocentric nature of methodologies, frameworks, and presumptions dominant within the social sciences and humanities. It attempts to analyse the recent history of feminist theory, from the 1960s to the 1980s, in the light of the challenges it has posed to mainstream methodologies, and to evaluate its effectiveness in terms of its ability to move beyond these frameworks. In particular, the common presumptions of neutrality, objectivity, truthful, perspectiveless knowledges, and transparent languages are examined from a feminist point of view.

Reproduction and Scale: A Response to Skeggs and Wilson

This paper draws on the concepts of reproduction and scale to suggest that Skeggs and Wilson, in their contributions to this issue of Feminist Legal Studies, both identify a future-oriented reworking of historically accumulated value. The spectacular emotional labour of British reality television and the parody of mechanistic labour in Bangkok’s sex shows may be seen as instances in the affective search for future security in transnational markets. Capitalist subjectivities are still being produced through these gendered and sexual activities, but they are being produced with television audiences and sex tourists whose geopolitical baggage becomes part of the show.
