Greater empirical attention directed toward gender-sensitive assessment strategies that concentrate on family-specific factors
is thought to be both timely and necessary, especially with regard to outcome variables associated with mental health and
substance abuse in at-risk adolescent populations. A sample of 2,646 court-involved adolescents was used to test two competing
models regarding relationships among disruptive family processes, mental health (as both internalizing and externalizing problems),
and substance abuse issues according to gender. The results of multiple group structural equation modeling procedures indicated
that disrupted family processes were significantly associated with higher levels of internalizing problems, externalizing
problems, and substance abuse in both male and female youth. For females, however, disrupted family processes were more related
to internalizing problems and substance abuse than externalizing problems. Further, the relationship between disrupted family
processes and substance abuse was not mediated by mental health issues, indicating a lack of support for the alternative model
tested in this study. Together, the findings underscore the primacy of the family’s impact on issues related to adolescent
development and well-being in tandem with the need for a more gender sensitive approach to the needs of court-involved males
and females.

The association of pubertal maturation with internalizing and externalizing symptoms was examined with a sample of 867 African-American 10 – 12-year-old children. Children reported their pubertal development status and timing using a self-report questionnaire, and symptoms were assessed through diagnostic interviews with the children and their primary caregivers. Pubertal status and timing were significantly associated with children's reports of the internalizing symptoms of social anxiety disorder, generalized anxiety disorder, and major depression and with the externalizing symptoms of oppositional defiant disorder, attention deficit disorder, and conduct disorder. Pubertal development also was associated with caregivers’ reports of children's externalizing symptoms. This study explores the relationship of parenting to internalizing and externalizing problems in Moroccan immigrant youth
in the Netherlands. Interviews were conducted with 713 Moroccan immigrant parents, using the Child Behavior Checklist and
the Nijmegen Rearing Questionnaire. Child rearing varied with socioeconomic status and psychological acculturation level of
the parent, and gender and age of the child. In accordance with studies in Western populations, high levels of affection and
monitoring were associated with low levels of problem behavior and high levels of discipline were associated with high levels
of problem behavior. However, in contrast to studies in Western populations, a positive relationship was revealed between
affection and discipline, and the univariate associations between discipline and problem behavior were modest. Discipline
and internalizing problems were unrelated in low SES families, whereas a positive relationship was found in high SES families.
The relationship between monitoring and externalizing problems was age-specific: We found a negative association for adolescents
and no association for children.

Many studies have documented the ways in which shyness can be a barrier to personal well-being and social adjustment throughout
childhood and adolescence; however, less is known regarding shyness in emerging adulthood. Shyness as experienced during emerging
adulthood may continue to be a risk factor for successful development. The purpose of this study was to compare shy emerging
adults with their non-shy peers in (a) internalizing behaviors, (b) externalizing behaviors, and (c) close relationships.
Participants included 813 undergraduate students (500 women, 313 men) from a number of locations across the United States.
Results showed that relatively shy emerging adults, both men and women, had more internalizing problems (e.g., anxious, depressed,
low self-perceptions in multiple domains), engaged in fewer externalizing behaviors (e.g., less frequent drinking), and experienced
poorer relationship quality with parents, best friends, and romantic partners than did their non-shy peers.

Community, demographic, familial, and personal risk factors of childhood depressive symptoms were examined from an ecological
theoretical approach using hierarchical linear modeling. Individual-level data were collected from an ethnically diverse (73%
African-American) community sample of 197 children and their parents; community-level data were obtained from the U.S. Census
regarding rates of community poverty and unemployment in participants’ neighborhoods. Results indicated that high rates of
community poverty and unemployment, children’s depressive attributional style, and low levels of self-perceived competence
predict children’s depressive symptoms, even after accounting for demographic and familial risk factors, such as parental
education and negative parenting behaviors. The effect of negative parenting behaviors on depressive symptoms was partially
mediated by personal variables like children’s self-perceived competence. Recommendations for future research, intervention
and prevention programs are discussed.

The current study modeled trajectories of substance use from ages 15 to 20 among 1,095 male serious juvenile offenders (M age = 16.54; 42% African-American, 34% Latino, 20% European-American, and 4% other ethnic/racial backgrounds) and prospectively
predicted trajectories from risk and protective factors before and after controlling for time spent in a supervised setting.
Results indicated that supervised time suppressed age-related growth in substance use. Trajectories of offenders with no supervised
time and low levels of supervised time increased in substance use across age, whereas offenders with high levels of supervised
time showed no growth. Almost all risk and protective factors had effects on initial substance use but only adolescent history
of substance use, impulse control, and psychosocial maturity had an effect on change in substance use over time. Findings
highlight the importance of formal sanctions and interventions superimposed on normal developmental processes in understanding
trajectories of substance use among serious juvenile offenders.

The first aim of this study was to examine the structure of externalizing and internalizing problem behavior during early
adolescence. Our second aim was to determine the stability of these problems for boys and for girls over time. A total of
650, 13–14-year-olds filled out (an expanded version of) the Youth Self-Report [YSR; Manual for the Youth Self-Report and 1991 Profile. Department of Psychiatry, University of Vermont, Burlington] 2 times with a 1-year interval. By using confirmatory factor
analyses (CFA) to test a series of competing models, a hierarchical model provided the best representation of the structure
of problem behavior at both Time 1 and Time 2: externalizing and internalizing problem behavior represent distinct aspects
but the model also demonstrates the existence of comorbidity at a higher level. This model appeared to be stable over time
for both boys and girls. The relative stability of problem behavior was found to be high for boys and girls. Absolute stability
for both externalizing and internalizing problems appeared to be higher for boys scoring in the lower range of problem behavior.

Children born to adolescent mothers have heightened vulnerability for exposure to multiple stressful life events owing to factors associated with teenaged parenthood such as poverty and low levels of maternal education. This study investigated whether early exposure to negative life events such as parental divorce, residential instability, and deaths in the family predicted children’s socioemotional and behavioral functioning at age 10. Hierarchical regression analyses suggested that negative life events—which were reported by 94% of the sample—were associated with less favorable developmental outcomes, with social support serving as a buffer between exposure to these events and children’s anxiety, internalization, externalization, and maladaptive behaviors.This research was supported by NIH grant # HD-26456. This study examined older siblings’ influence on their younger brothers and sisters by assessing the connections between youth's
perceptions of sibling influence and sibling similarities in four domains: Risky behavior, peer competence, sports interests,
and art interests. Participants included two adolescent-age siblings (firstborn age M=17.34; second-born age M=14.77) from 191 maritally intact families. Analyses revealed that second-borns’ perceptions of influence were positively
linked to siblings’ reports of intimacy and temporal involvement, but not to reports of negativity. Further, sibling similarities
were most evident when younger siblings reported sibling influence and when their older brothers and sisters reported high
engagement, competence, or interest in a particular domain. Discussion focuses on the challenges of documenting sibling influence
and the need to refine its measurement.

Correlations between adolescent and parent reports of adolescent problems are low in magnitude. In community samples adolescents
tend to report more problems than parents and in clinical samples adolescents tend to report fewer problems than parents. Indices of agreement may be biased if some adolescents in a given sample report more problems and
others report fewer problems than parents. In the current study, order and mean agreement between adolescent and maternal
reports of adolescent internalizing and externalizing problems, taking into account the direction of disagreement, was examined
in a community sample of 133 young adolescents and their mothers. Two-thirds to three-quarters of adolescents reported more
problems than mothers. Accounting for the direction of discrepancies resulted in improved agreement between adolescents and
mothers and differing patterns of predictors of discrepancies. Additionally, the results demonstrate the need to control for
relations between adolescent-reported problems and discrepancies when exploring predictors of discrepancies.

Early onset of criminal career is one of the most robust predictors of persistence in offending. However, many antisocial
children do not become chronic adult offenders. Using longitudinal data of young male offenders in the California Youth Authority,
we examined trajectories of criminal behavior from childhood to adulthood. We particularly focused on the main and interaction
effects of age at their first arrest and completion of high school education. First, we found that, on average, cumulative
crime trajectory was curvilinear, with a subtle increase in childhood followed by a rapid increase in late adolescence and
a slow down in adulthood. Second, earlier starters had a steeper cumulative growth in criminal behavior over time. Third,
finishing high school served as a potential turning point in offenders’ lives, particularly for later starters. The results
highlight that continuity and desistance in crime can be partially understood by timing of significant events and heterogeneity
in response to turning points.

The direct and mediated effects of socioenvironmental risk on internalizing and externalizing problems among Latino youth
aged 10–14 were examined using prospective analyses. Participants in this study were 464 Latino mother and child dyads surveyed
as part of the Welfare, Children & Families: A Three City Study. It was hypothesized that socioenvironmental risk (i.e., maternal psychological distress, maternal parenting stress, neighborhood
disadvantage, and perceived financial strain) would influence later adolescent adjustment by interrupting important family
processes and interfering with opportunities for adolescents to develop appropriate social competence. Using path analyses,
the mediational model was compared across high and low acculturation groups. With two exceptions, the models for the high
and low acculturation groups were equivalent. Results supported a mediated effect between early socioenvironmental risk and
later adjustment problems for the low acculturation group through family routines and adolescent social competence. Among
families high in acculturation, socioenvironmental risk effects were partially mediated through family routines and adolescent
social competence. Finally, a path from gender to maternal monitoring was present in the low acculturation group model but
not the high acculturation group model.

We used three identity processes (i.e., commitment, in-depth exploration, and reconsideration of commitment) from a recently
developed model of identity formation to derive empirically identity statuses in a sample of 1952 early and middle adolescents.
By means of cluster analysis, we identified five statuses: achievement, foreclosure, moratorium, searching moratorium, and
diffusion. Specifically, we found an intra-status differentiation within moratorium, unraveling the positive and negative
facets of this status documented in prior literature. The five clusters could be meaningfully distinguished on a number of
variables, such as personality features, psychosocial problems, and parental relationships. These findings indicated that
a valid distinction in identity statuses could be made in early and middle adolescence. Finally, age and ethnic background
strongly affected the distribution of the participants among the five identity statuses. Implications and suggestions for
future research are discussed.

A large volume of research has investigated interrelations among adolescent risk behaviors. Although several theoretical accounts
have been proposed, researchers have not directly examined hypotheses for why risk behaviors are linked. In the present paper, a distinction is drawn between predictive factors that explain variance
in risk behaviors and “linkage factors” which may provide an explanation for why risk behaviors are interrelated. The relevance
of linkage factors to risk behavior research, theory, and practice is described. Further, a simple to use and easy to interpret
analytic technique for exploring linkage-related issues is illustrated. Using this technique, hypotheses regarding the role
of predictors in explaining linkages among risk behaviors can be tested directly. The proposed line of inquiry will provide
valuable input for intervention efforts and theoretically relevant information concerning linkages among adolescent risk behaviors.

This study focused on the relationship between voice and judgments of procedural justice in a sample of older adolescents and examined potential moderating and mediating influences of identity orientation (personal, social, and collective) and negative emotional response. Participants read 1 of 2 different family conflict scenarios (voice and no voice) asking them to imagine themselves in a disagreement with their parents over grades and financial support. In the voice condition, parents were described as making their decision after listening to the participant’s input. In the no voice condition, parents were described as making their decision without listening to the participant’s input. The adolescents then judged the fairness of the parental decisions and responded to questions concerning their identity orientation. Findings indicate that in addition to replicating the effect of voice in a novel context, the present investigation found moderating effects of personal identity orientation on procedural fairness judgments. Additionally, negative emotional response partially mediated the relationship between voice and global judgments of procedural fairness.Mark R. The present study examined cultural orientation as a protective factor against tobacco and marijuana smoking for African American
young women (ages 18 to 25). African American college students (N=145) from a predominantly White university were administered subscales from the African American Acculturation Scale-Revised
(AAAS-R); the shortened Individualism/Collectivism (INDCOL) Scale; a Tobacco and Drug Use Survey; and a background survey.
Multiple logistic regression was conducted using cultural orientation variables as predictors and smoking status (i.e., tobacco
and marijuana) as the criterion. It was expected that young women who endorsed traditional African American cultural characteristics
(i.e., religious beliefs, health, family values, and socialization) and were collectivistic in their community (i.e., cultural
interdependency) and familial (i.e., familial interdependency) interactions would be less likely to smoke. Results show that
traditional religious beliefs and practice was protective against tobacco smoking for this sample of young women. Familial
interdependency (e.g., supportive exchanges between friends, and consultation and sharing with parents), and traditional religious
beliefs and practices surfaced as protective factors against marijuana smoking. Traditional health beliefs and practices was
a risk factor for both tobacco and marijuana smoking. The implications signal the need for smoking prevention and cessation
programs to focus on interpersonal factors which may strengthen African American young women’s religious and familial bonding.

This longitudinal study examined whether the risk and positive factors contributing to the delinquent behaviors and internalizing
problems of 454 Latino adolescents varied across maternal linguistic acculturation and adolescent gender. Although the level
of cumulative risk to which the 10-to-14-year old adolescents were exposed did not vary by maternal linguistic acculturation,
the factors contributing to their subsequent adjustment 16 months later varied substantially. Multiple regression analyses
showed that for boys, maternal monitoring offset cumulative risk effects in the high acculturation group, but was unrelated
to adjustment in the low acculturation group. Social competence served a protective function for boys in the high acculturation
group, but was detrimental for boys in the low acculturation group and mother-son relationship quality directly predicted
more subsequent delinquent behaviors among boys in the low acculturation group. Maternal monitoring was the only positive
factor contributing to girls’ adjustment, directly predicting fewer delinquent behaviors for all girls.

Much of the research literature on school violence has focused narrowly on individual characteristics of troubled youth, without
careful examination of contextual factors that might influence violence and victimization in school settings. This study examines
the associations among Student Participation in Decision-Making in their Schools, Teacher Support, and Student Victimization
(by students and staff members) in a nationally representative sample of 10,254 students in 164 junior high and high schools
in Israel. Data were analyzed using structural equations modeling for full group analyses and for group comparisons of patterns
among junior high, high school, male, female, and Jewish and Arab students. Across all models, higher levels of teacher support
were associated with lower rates of victimization. Participation in Decision-Making was also related to Victimization, with
varying patterns depending on students' gender and ethnicity. Theoretical and social cultural factors contributing to these
gender and cultural differences are discussed. The general findings are consistent with the research literature on teacher
support, however they raise future research questions about culture and gender effects when considering participation and
school contexts.

Although numerous cross-national studies have assessed life satisfaction among adults, similar studies using adolescent samples
have been rare. To address this shortage of research, a total of 1338 youth adolescents from two individualistic nations (Ireland,
USA) and two collectivistic nations (China, South Korea) were administered the Multidimensional Students’ Life Satisfaction Scale (MSLSS: Huebner, 1994) to assesses general life satisfaction and satisfaction with family, friends, school, self, and living environment. Responses
were analyzed to assess potential cross-national differences in (a) mean levels of life satisfaction, and (b) response styles,
specifically acquiescence and extreme responding. Mean scores revealed positive ratings by adolescents from all four nations
across all domains, with the exceptions of satisfaction with school experiences (Ireland, South Korean, USA), living environment
(China, South Korea), self (South Korea), and general life satisfaction (South Korea). Results also revealed significant response
style differences across all MSLSS domains. Significant gender and gender-by-nation effects were observed for both mean score
and response style differences, although the effect sizes were small. The implications of these findings were discussed, particularly
with respect to “individualistic” vs. “collectivistic” cultural differences.
