Shanghai: Humanity Amid Occupation Shanghai of the 1930s had particular appeal for Japan, being a large international metropolis in its immediate vicinity. After World War I, Japan concentrated all its China trade, shipping and manufacturing in Shanghai, and by 1930, 30,000 of the 50,000 foreigners living in Shanghai were Japanese.     

Highlights of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization

June 14-15, 2001-The first Shanghai Cooperation Organization-(SCO) summit is held in Shanghai, involving the presidents of China, Russia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan. The six leaders issued a joint statement that announced Uzbekistan's participation in the "Shanghai Five," the launch of the SCO and the Shanghai treaty to crack down on terrorism, separatism and extremism.

At that time, foreigners residing in Shanghai knew that this river led to Suzhou, and silk and tea flowed along it from the hinterland by ship; thus its name - the Suzhou River. Originating from the Taihu Lake,and crossing the Jiangnan section of the Grand Canal, it also in fact flows through Wujiang, Wuxian, Kunshan, Jiading and Qingpu, then joins the Huangpu River at Shanghai＇s Waibaidu Bridge.

At the invitation of the CPAFFC, Gabriele Albertini, member of the European Parliament and mayor of Milan, paid a goodwill visit to Beijing on November 25, 2005. Beijing Review has conducted a survey on how foreigners view the city, sometimes referred to as China’s Big Apple. Survey respondents included: an anonymous 30-year-old UK male, who has lived in Shanghai for five years and works for an import company focused on high-end market products; Steve Bisogno, a 28-year-old American, who resided in Shanghai from 2001 to 2004, working there as a teacher at the Sydney Institute of Language and Commerce and as a writer, while attending Shanghai International Studies University (he is now a commercial underwriter for a European insurance firm based in New York and contributing writer to Beijing Review); Australian Elyse Singleton, 33, who has been in Shanghai since 2001 (on and off), working as a freelance writer and designer; Sami Zabel, from Maryland, U.S., who studied in Shanghai for half a year in 2006 after graduating from a U.S. college; and an anonymous 43-year-old U.S. male from Maryland, who works as a business consultant and is married with two children.
