THIS year marks the 10th anniversary of China’s accession to the World Trade Organization (WTO). Before joining the WTO in 2001,many Chinese were afraid that membership would have a substantial negative impact on some of China’s main industries. At the same time,there were misgivings in some countries about China’s ability to fulfill its commitments and that its WTO membership would affect other countries badly.

Iver Frigaard, acting police commissioner of the UN Mission in Kosovo, awards a UN peacekeeping medal to Wu Shengguo, captain of the fifth Chinese police contingent in Kosovo, in Pristina on November 16. The other 17 members of Wu's squad were also awarded at the same ceremony in recognition of their contributions to maintaining peace and stability in Kosovo. Chinese civilian police personnel first joined UN peacekeeping operations in Kosovo in 2004. The fifth contingent will end its oneyear term next March.
