With the Olympic flame dancing to the drums of the Chinese Year of the Tiger,the Beijing 2022 Games—the first-ever Winter Olympics held in China and its second Olympics after hosting the 2008 Summer Games—concluded on February 20,to be followed by the Paralympic Winter Games from March 4 to 13.

The Beijing 2022 Winter Olympics have concluded,but the legacy lives onAfter 19 days of intense competition,the Beijing 2022 Games came to a grand finale in the closing ceremony on February 20at the National Stadium in the capital of China,also the first-ever city to have hosted both the Summer and Winter Olympics.The Olympic baton now has been passed on to the Italian cities of Milan and Cortina d'Ampezzo,hosts of the 2026 Winter Games.

正Preparations for the Winter Olympics and Paralympics in Beijing haveentered the final stageAs the Olympic Summer Games concluded in Tokyo on August 8,it was less than six months before the Olympic Winter Games would take to the slopes in China's capital Beijing and co-host city Zhangjiakou.Preparations for the games,scheduled for February 4-20,2022,have now entered a sprint to the finish line.From July to August,the Beijing Organizing Committee for the 2022 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games (BOCOG) dispatched its staff to the Tokyo Olympics in a bid to observe and learn from their hosting experiences.

Present at the flame lighting ceremony was Yu Zaiqing, a special representative of Beijing 2022, who also witnessed years ago such a ceremony for the Beijing 2008 Summer Olympics.

Starting in Tokyo,Japan,in late July and continuing in Beijing,China,in February 2022,the Olympic and Paralympic Summer and Winter Games will gather top athletes from nations around the world and bring unforgettable,emotional moments to the international community. The Beijing 2022 Games,however,have not avoided politicization. Calls for boycotts have been made in the West,including by the European Parliament.     

An Open Arena

正Su Bingtian is a name that glued many Chinese to their televisions for the Olympic Summer Games Tokyo 2020. The 31-year-old sprinter made history on August 1 as he became the first Chinese to qualify for an Olympic Men’s 100m Final,after setting the new Asian record of 9.83 seconds in the semifinal. He finished sixth with 9.98 seconds in the final.

正Yang Qian,21,gained her fame for being so poised and collected for her age.On July 24,the Chinese shooter won the first gold medal of the Olympic Summer Games Tokyo 2020 with a victory in the women's 10-meter air rifle,followed by Anastasiia Galashina of Russia who took the silver and Nina Christen of Switzerland who bagged the bronze.

正When 21-year-old Yang Qian won the women's 10m air rifle competition,the first gold medal at the Olympic Summer Games Tokyo 2020,all eyes were on her.During the live-broadcast,close-ups of the event gave audiences detailed views of not only her performance,but also the accessories she donned,which included a yellow duck-shaped hairpin,an elastic hair band with a carrot-shaped bobble,and light pink nail polish dotted with small pearls.     

The Special 'One'

One seemingly trivial issue has vexed Liu Wenyan for over 30 years. Liu only needs one shoe, but every time she goes shoe shopping she has to buy a pair. Growing up in Guizhou Province in southwest China, Liu lost one leg in a traffic accident at the age of 4. Now aged 37, she has spent over three decades searching for either a seller of single shoes, or some-one else with whom she can share the pair. Paralympic high jump star Gui Yuna, who is the same age as Liu, faces the same problem. Gui comes from Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region and, at 7, also lost her leg in a car ac-cident. The accident didn't discourage her from pursuing her athletic passion and in 2007 she broke the high jump world record for women amputees at China's 2007 National Games for Persons With Disabilities. One year later, she acted as a torchbearer for the Beijing 2008 Summer Olympic Games. Despite her success, Gui is still bothered by the shoe problem.

On January 18, President Xi Jinping, while inspecting preparations for the Games, called for advancing the work against difficulties. China's 14th National Games officially opened in Shaanxi Province on September 15, marking the first time for a province in west China to organize the quadrennial multi-sport event since its inaugural edition in 1959. As the highest-level sporting event in the country, a total of 50 Olympic cham-pions, representing all of the country's provinces, municipalities and autono-mous regions, compete during the athletic extravaganza. With COVID-19 still a major consideration, the National Games' organizing committee devised and implemented comprehensive pandemicprevention regulations, with the goal of "zero infections."

Nationalistic feelings and sports: The incident of the overseas Chinese protest against NBC's coverage of the centennial Olympic games

In NBC's coverage of the 1996 Summer Olympic Games Opening Ceremony, Bob Costas’ remarks about Team China invited furious and persistent protests from the overseas Chinese. The protests, which were chiefly based on situational ethics, garnered an extensive grassroots support and continued for weeks after the Atlanta Olympics had finished. Under pressure from the protestors, NBC made a public apology. In response to the protests and NBC's apology, the US media expressed strong discontent. The arguments were basically supported by political correctness. Thus, situational ethics collided with political correctness. Although the protest against NBC appeared to be an accidental incident, a careful review of the incident and the opinions voiced by both sides reveals that the anger of the overseas Chinese with NBC, which justified itself in a number of ways, bears a variety of social and political implications, and that the US media's position has also been justified by the norms that have been formed over the past few years and accepted by the media and the majority of the American public alike. An explanation for the causes of the protest incident begs an in‐depth analysis of broad social and political factors.
