On February 25, 2004, the United States issued its Country Reports on Human Rights Practices for 2003, distorting the human rights conditions in China, including human rights in Chinese prisons. As a prison inmate in Beijing, I have a say in the human rights conditions in prison based on my personal experience. 1 wrote an article titled "Human Rights in Chinese Prisons in the Eye of a Prison Inmate," which was published in the journal Human Rights (Issue No. 6,2003 of English Edition). Now I'd like to say something about the right to education in Chinese prisons.  相似文献

PASSING for a member of the opposite sex is a tirelessly amusing trick celebrated in several art forms over many centuries and in many cultures. In 1998,Walt Disney Pictures made the animated film named Mulan based on a story from the Sui Dynasty(581-618) about a Chinese legendary heroine Hua Mulan.Mulan impersonated a man and took the place of her ill father in the ranks of the army fighting invaders from the north. For her bravery in assuming a male role, and the sacrifice she made for her father,Mulan has been honored in history. There are many such female heroines in Chinese history, fictitious and real, such as Fan Lihua of the Tang Dynasty(618-907) and Qin Liangyu of the Ming Dynasty(1368-1644) whose legends celebrate female ferocity and their awakening to inner strength and power.  相似文献

Following the visit to a few prisons in Shanghai, we got the initial knowledge about how the prisons are managed by law and how the rights and interests of inmates are safeguarded and all the gratifying achievements the prisons have made in educating and correcting the inmates. In Shanghai, China's economic powerhouse, all the prisons, old and new, should be most advanced in the country, in terms of both software and hardware. Doubtlessly, the material base has  相似文献

With the financial crisis wreaking havoc on nations across all continents, our sense of living in a globalized age has become more acute than ever. China is also feeling the pinch, despite initial confidence that it would stay immune to the meltdown. Thousands of labor-intensive plants in Guangdong Province, a major engine of the nation's export industries, have closed. And in the nation's leading coal-producing area of Shanxi Province, the highways are no longer choked with fully loaded trucks, a clear sign of the scaling-back of manufacturing nationwide.  相似文献

The year 2003 marked the debut of the new Chinese leaders in governing the country. Their love and care for the people have featured their governance and won extensive acclamation in China and the world. On March 18, the top legislature of China, the National People's Congress, elected Hu Jintao President of State and Wen Jiabao Premier of the State Council. The new leadership of China was formed in the applause of NPC deputies. Right after the new leadership took its office, a tough challenge confronted them as a series of disasters broke out suddenly. IT'S springtime in Hainan, literally in terms of the season, but also figuratively in terms of an ongoing era of rebirth for the tropical island. Hainan is China's southernmost territory, and the nation's smallest province in terms of land area. Size is no reflection of status, however. The island is famous as a holiday resort of azure skies, bright sunshine, fresh air and unspoiled beaches.  相似文献

Xi Jianying is unfortunate and fortunate at the same time. Now in her late 60s, the woman in Shandong Province, eastern China, has suffered an unknown pain in her head since young. She is fortunate in that for the past 20 years, a pharmaceutical company in Jinan, the provincial capital, has done everything it can to relieve her of the pain. Believe it or not, the Dongfeng (meaning East Wind) Pharmaceutical Factory has been producing a "miracle" medicine just for one patient, for Xi, who lives in a mountainous village on the suburbs of Tai'an City, in total disregard of the huge cost involved and the loss thus incurred.  相似文献
