As one of the world’s largest grain consumers, food security has always been a major concern for the Chinese nation.China must confront the challenge of feeding a fifth of the world’s population with less than 9 percent of the planet’s arable land. In 2011,China’s grain output recorded growth for the eighth successive year, and total production reached an all-time high of 571 million tons. In terms of food security,China’s goal is to maintain a self-sufficiency rate of above 95 percent. However,an annual net population growth of 7.39 million and the effective decline of the area of farmland  相似文献

Most Depressives Untreated The Chinese Psychiatrist Association under the Chinese Medical Doctor Association says less than 10 percent of China’s 30 million clinically depressed have access to professional help. Statistics show that China has a total of 17,000 registered psychiatrists–about one for every 100,000 patients. The ratio in developed countries, however, is 1:10,000. China needs to train and register another 113,000 psychiatrists in order to achieve the developed mean ratio.  相似文献

In the past decade, the proportion of China’s urban population has increased 3.2 percent annually, giving it the fastest urbanization rate in the world. Of the global cities whose population exceeds 500,000,236 of them,or one quarter of the world’s stock, are in China. Construction projects in cities are reducing the architectural remnants of their traditional culture. The impulses that drive urbanization and modernization seem to contradict the values associated with cultural preservation. What is China’s approach to this dilemma? With this question China Today interviewed Lü Pintian,a researcher with the Chinese National Academy of Arts and a member of the National Experts Committee for Protecting Intangible Cultural Heritage. As a veteran scholar on Chinese culture and arts,Lü Pintian champions mastery of all forms of cultural expression, believing the arts to be the touchstone of social culture and ecological balance. He advocates "reinvigorating handicrafts and activating folklore" as basic tactics for protecting China’s intangible cultural heritage. His academic works have won much acclaim.  相似文献

COUNTED as a separate country, China’s 200 million elderly (over 60), at one seventh of its total population, would be the fifth largest in the world. China has seen the world’s fastest growing population of over 60s since 1980, with an annual increase of 3 percent. The number of octogenarians and above has been growing even faster, registering yearly growth of 5.4 percent. But herein lies a problem.  相似文献

China’s economic statistics released in recent months imply that its economic slowdown may deepen. Three figures in particular are of concern to economists;those showing drops in growth of industrial value-added output, in the money supply, and in power generation. The growth of industrial value-added output is at a three-year low, having increased only 9.3 percent over a year. The narrow measure of money supply’s (M1) 3.1 percent year-on-year growth marks a record low, while the miniscule 0.7 percent growth of total power generation signals a scaling back of the country’s industrial activities. In a meeting at the end of May, Chinese  相似文献

正EARLIER this year sections of the Western media tried to spin a story that the world economy was experiencing"severe slowdown in China"and"strong recovery in the U.S."In other words,China’s economy was allegedly in trouble and the U.S.was doing well. Now that the factual data is in for the fi rst half of the year it shows the opposite was true.China’s economic growth was 7.5 percent to the second quarter of 2014;that of the U.S.was 2.4 percent.China’s economy thus grew more than three times as fast as the U.S.’s.Still more signifi cantly for the U.S.,its own statistical agencies and the IMF have offi cially revised their projections for long-term U.S.growth.Both now estimate it at  相似文献
