Chinese Scientists Develop Nanometer ＂Ordered Fiber＂

China＇s independently developed moon rover, which will be used during the second phase of the Chang＇e lunar probe program, is a genuine feat of engineering, capable of overcoming virtually any obstacle it is likely to encounter on its upcoming mission to explore the lunar surface. ＂The rover will unfold and stand on its wheels automatically before proceeding with its exploration tasks once it gets out of the spacecraft,＂ said Mao Ming, head of the China North Vehicle Research Institute, which is in char.cle of the rover＇s development.     

People＇s Communes

CHINA＇s individual agricultural economy based on private ownership was transformed into cooperative economy based on public ownership between 1949 and ＇ 1956. During this time span the ＂communistic commune;＂ the ＂col ective farm＂and the ＂people＇s commune＂ successively appeared in rural areas. In 1958, shortly after Chairman Mao Zedong said, ＂It is good to establish people＇s communes,＂ the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China established people＇s communes throughout the country. Documents at that time stated： ＂The realization of communism in our country is not a thing of remote future. We must actively establish people＇s communes and explore a concrete way to communism.＂ By the end of October 1958, more than 26,000 people,s communes housing 120 million rural households -- 99 percent of all rural households in China - had been set up.

IN the vocabulary of the Chinese, ＂Bethune＂ is the ultimate synonym for the noble figure.Norman Bethune＇s reputation was made in the anti-Japanese war period when the Canadian physician trudged the frontiers under heavy gunfire to treat the great many Chi- nese wounded. Adding virtual martyrdom to his heroic qualities, Bethune eventually died in the anti-fascist battlefield, from exhaustion and complications contracted from surgery. ＂What kind of spirit is this,＂ asked Mao Zedong in his famous 1939 article ＂In memory of Norman Bethune,＂ ＂that makes a foreigner selflessly adopt the cause of the Chinese people＇s liberation as his own？＂     

Belated ＂Thanks＂

On February 21, 1972, U.S. President Richard Nixon started a weeklong official visit to China, the first by an American leader to the People＇s Republic. Nixon later called it ＂The week that changed the world.＂ At the end of his trip the two countries released the Joint Communique of the United States of America and the People＇s Republic of China （also known as Shanghai Communique）, in which both expressed a desire to normalize relations and stressed common ground on several key issues. The frosty ties between two of the world＇s biggest countries began to thaw. On December 16, 1978, China and the U.S. signed the Joint Communiqu6 on the Establishment of Diplomatic Relations, officially recognizing each other and establishing diplomatic relations on January 1, 1979. On March 1 the same year they exchanged ambassadors and embassies, and Sino-U.S. relationships entered a new epoch.
