Science,technology, and congress

James E. Katz is a sociologist and a member of staff at Bellcore, the research and engineering arm of the regional telephone companies. Among his books are Presidential Politics and Science Policy;and Congress and National Energy Policy.He has served as a Senate staff member. Research for this article was supported by the Carnegie Commission on Science, Technology, and Government.     

Columbus’ fall from grace

She has written widely on early modern Spanish history. Among her books are The Changing Face of Empire: Charles V, Philip II and Habsburg Authority, 1551–1559; Armada. The Official Catalogue of the National Maritime Museum Exhibition.She is also co-editor (with Simon Adams) of England, Spain, and the Gran Armada, 1585–1604. Essays from the Anglo-Spanish Conferences, London and Madrid, 1988.     

Japan invents the future

Among his recent books are Damascus Courts the West: Syrian Politics, 1989–1991; Friendly Tyrants: An American Dilemma(co-edited with Adam Garfinkle). Research for this article was made possible by fellowships from the Japan Society, New York, and the National Institute for Research Advancement, Tokyo. A grant from the Olin Foundation supported the writing.     

The silence of the tapes

He is author of The challenge of the Borderline Patient;and The Reality of Mental Illness(with Martin Roth). His research interests include diagnostic and therapeutic issues of personality disorders, adjustment problems of Southeast Asian refugees, and comparisons of self-injurious behaviors in medieval Europe and contemporary society.

His publications include Guidelines to the Decentralization of Government Furnctions; Utilization of RANN Research Results: A Survey of the Research Applied to National Needs Program of the National Science Foundation;and A Strategy for Improving Education in Science and Mathematics.     

Au Revoir to “Sacred Cows”? Assessing the Impact of the Nouvelle Droite in Britain

This article assesses the impact of the Nouvelle Droite on the extreme right in contemporary Britain. Occupying a central focus is the role of Scorpion magazine, edited by Michael Walker. The author examines the promotion of the Nouvelle Droite by Scorpion, and in particular Walker's attempts to encourage the British far right to bury two of its “sacred cows”: conspiracy theory and biological racism. He then identifies how Nouvelle Droite thought influenced the ideology and discourse of the 1980s National Front, before moving on to discuss its impact on Nick Griffin's recent attempts to modernize the ideology of the British National Party.
