Domestic violence is a significant health problem affecting women all around the world by causing a wide range of physical and psychological traumas. Yemen has a very high percentage of women experiencing intimate partner violence (up to 50%) and a high mortality rate. In this article, we are presenting 3 particular cases of domestic violence deaths in which the weapon used was a jambia (jambia, jambiah, jambiya, djambia), a special dagger specific to Yemen and the surrounding areas. We are also summarizing the main characteristics of jambia-inflicted lesions and their thanatology.  相似文献

The macroscopic and microscopic findings in neonatal freshwater drowning are demonstrated on the basis of 3 exemplary cases of birth in the bathroom after concealed pregnancy. If the newborn is expelled under water and remains there until death, the lungs cannot be ventilated with air. In case of incomplete or only temporary submersion, aeration of the lungs may develop in the immediate postpartum period. The morphologic criteria of separate existence are critically discussed with respect to the presented findings.  相似文献

Peroxidase activity was determined in experimental compression-excoriation lesions and incision wounds of rat skin after different periods of vital time. The peroxidase enzyme was extracted from the tissues by homogenization in 0.5% cetyltrimethylammoniumbromide, and the enzyme activity was measured from the supernatant by o-dianisidine-H2O2 assay. In the blood of the rats a mean activity of approx. 5.26 +/- 1.11 U/g dry weight was observed. In the control specimens of the skin the activity was very low and generally below the detection limit of the methods used. In 30-min-old compression-excoriation lesions the mean peroxidase activity was 0.38 +/- 0.21 U/g dry weight. In lesions older than 30 min the activity started to increase rapidly. In 4-h-old compression-excoriation lesions it was 10 times higher than the 30-min level and was 40 times higher in 12-h-old lesions and 70-100 times higher in 1-3-day-old compression-excoriation lesions, respectively. In 30-min-old incision wounds the mean peroxidase activity was 0.65 +/- 0.37 U/g dry weight. The increase of the activity compared with the 30-min level was even faster in the incision wounds: in 4-h-old wounds the mean activity was 50 times higher, in 12-h-old wounds 200 times higher and in those of 1-5 days it was several hundreds of times higher. Compression-excoriation lesions made after death showed activity similar to the control specimens. Postmortem autolysis at +22 degrees C resulted in a loss of the enzyme activity in 1-day-old compression-excoriation lesions so that after 3 days approx. 80% remained, and after 5 and 7 days approx. 40% was present. After 3 days of autolysis at +4 degrees C, nearly 100% of the activity remained and approx. 90% was present after 5 and 7 days of autolysis. Increased peroxidase activity was also detectable in human vital excoriations in the specimens which were taken in autopsies several days postmortem.  相似文献

Hanging is a common method of committing suicide and a routine task in medico-legal autopsies. The hanging mark is the most relevant external sign and its characteristics are well known, but, for unknown reasons, there are major differences in reports on internal findings. We retrospectively studied 228 consecutive cases of hanging deaths. A complete standard autopsy was performed for every case. We investigated the association between the characteristics of the hanging mark and the frequency of bone, cartilage, soft tissue, and vascular injuries with the mode of suspension. Most cases (75.3%) presented some kind of bone or cartilage fracture, but these were unrelated to any of the variables studied. Vascular lesions are clearly more infrequent: intimal injuries were found in the carotid artery (9.1%), the jugular vein (2.2%), and ruptures of the carotid adventitial layer (21.7%). These could be partially associated with the use of a hard fixed noose and body weight.  相似文献

Bite marks in human skin may be found to have been so forcefully made that the skin surface has been disrupted; the marks have become skin lesions. In the following, a case is reported in which such lesions were found on the back of a victim of assault. The dental examiners found it necessary to arrange for a series of simulated bites to be made in order to obtain adequate material for comparison.  相似文献

Postmortem bone alterations are very frequent and can raise the issue of their nature (antemortem, perimortem or postmortem defects). The aim of this work is to study various aspects of defects which were not assessed as perimortem trauma, from a series of 50 defects examined, resulting from 24 forensic cases. This study emphasizes the variability of size, shape and number of postmortem defects. Usually the diagnosis of antemortem defects is helped by a careful examination of some characteristics as the edges of the defects, the areas of discoloration of the edges and of the whole bone. Elsewhere it appears very difficult to know the true nature (antemortem, postmortem, or perimortem alterations) of the bone.  相似文献

Since the turn of the century a number of studies have been conducted on the problem of criminal homicides. For the most part, these studies have focused on large urban areas with little, or no, attention being given to the less populated areas of the country. Therefore, much of the current body of knowledge on criminal homicides is based upon the findings of these urban areas. This study focuses upon homicides is a semi-rural area of Alabama in the belief that the differences in cultures, lifestyles, and population densities found in small cities and rural areas will produce homicide characteristics different from those in urban areas. We examine the pathogenesis of Wischnevsky's lesions. These gastric lesions were found in 15 of 17 deaths due to accidental hypothermia. Deaths occurred at various minimum temperatures (-2.4-20.4 degrees C); gastric lesions did not always reflect exposure temperatures. However, all victims exposed to temperatures greater than 10 degrees C had severe lesions. At temperatures less than 5 degrees C, on the other hand, severe gastric lesions were seen in victims younger (43.2 years old) than those with mild lesions (61.0 years old). These findings suggest that gastric lesions develop by exposure to temperatures at which the body's response to cold stress continues, or as result of a strong response to short-term stress. Histopathologic examination demonstrated a characteristic finding of cystic dilatation of the capillaries, presumably due to massive reperfusion after functional collapse of the microcirculation in the gastric mucosa.  相似文献

Sequential morphological changes as found in the hearts of 250 sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS) infants are described. Detailed examination of macroscopic and microscopic lesions reveal that all SIDS infants had identifiable lesions at the time of their death. The lesions can best be described as selective focal anoxic muscle fibre necrosis at chronologically different developmental stages. The extent of these lesions vary markedly from case to case, from a minimal muscle fibre eosinophilia through contraction band formation, myocytolysis, stromal condensation to scar formation. The morphological variations in the lesions amongst individual cases can be interpreted as relating to the time interval of the development of the lesions. The intramural and coronary arteries in some cases are also affected showing intimal hyperplasia. Although these sequential morphological aberrations are not specific and typical to SIDS infants only, they were present in all SIDS infants in this series.  相似文献

The use of DNA in forensics has grown rapidly for human applications along with the concomitant development of bioinformatics and demographic databases to help fully realize the potential of this molecular information. Similar techniques are also used routinely in many wildlife cases, such as species identification in food products, poaching and the illegal trade of endangered species. The use of molecular techniques in forensic cases related to wildlife and the development of associated databases has, however, mainly focused on large mammals with the exception of a few high-profile species. There is a need to develop similar databases for aquatic species for fisheries enforcement, given the large number of exploited and endangered fish species, the intensity of exploitation, and challenges in identifying species and their derived products. We sequenced a 500bp fragment of the mitochondrial cytochrome b gene from representative individuals from 26 harvested fish taxa from Ontario, Canada, focusing on species that support major commercial and recreational fisheries. Ontario provides a unique model system for the development of a fish species database, as the province contains an evolutionarily diverse array of freshwater fish families representing more than one third of all freshwater fish in Canada. Inter- and intraspecific sequence comparisons using phylogenetic analysis and a BLAST search algorithm provided rigorous statistical metrics for species identification. This methodology and these data will aid in fisheries enforcement, providing a tool to easily and accurately identify fish species in enforcement investigations that would have otherwise been difficult or impossible to pursue.  相似文献

International rivers create complex relationships between their riparian states, which can contribute to economic, political, and social losses. Treaties provide a means for states to coordinate their actions in managing international river disputes to minimize these losses. However, there is little knowledge about treaty content and the factors influencing treaty design. We test whether a relationship exists between the challenges of negotiating, complying, and distributing the gains in bilateral, multilateral, and basin-wide negotiation contexts and the depth of cooperation along with the degree of institutionalization. While the great challenges confronting multilateral or basin-wide negotiations can produce treaties that focus on joint gains and shallow cooperation to secure the signature of riparians, we find that they can also provide opportunities for deeper, more behavior-altering, cooperation. To manage the difficulties of maintaining multilateral cooperation, we find a higher degree of institutionalization. We also find that bilateral negotiations provide states with opportunities for deeper cooperation, but a lower degree of institutionalization.  相似文献

Geophysics may assist scent dogs and divers in the search of water bodies for human and animal remains, contraband, weapons and explosives by surveying large areas rapidly and identifying targets or environmental hazards. The most commonly applied methods are described and evaluated for forensic searches. Seismic reflection or refraction and CHIRPS are useful for deep, open water bodies and identifying large targets, yet limited in streams and ponds. The use of ground penetrating radar (GPR) on water (WPR) is of limited use in deep waters (over 20 m) but is advantageous in the search for non-metallic targets in small ditches and ponds. Large metal or metal-bearing targets can be successfully imaged in deep waters by using towfish magnetometers: in shallow waters such a towfish cannot be used, so a non-metalliferous boat can carry a terrestrial magnetometer. Each device has its uses, depending on the target and location: unknown target make-up (e.g. a homicide victim with or without a metal object) may be best located using a range of methods (the multi-proxy approach), depending on water depth. Geophysics may not definitively find the target, but can provide areas for elimination and detailed search by dogs and divers, saving time and effort.  相似文献

The CYber DEfenSe Trainer (CYDEST) is a virtualized training platform for network defense and computer forensics. It uses virtual machines to provide tactical level exercises for personnel such as network administrators, first responders, and digital forensics investigators. CYDEST incorporates a number of features to reduce instructor workload and to improve training realism, including: (1) automated assessment of trainee performance, (2) automated attacks that respond dynamically to the student's actions, (3) a full fidelity training environment, (4) an unrestricted user interface incorporating real tools, and (5) continuous, remote accessibility via the Web.  相似文献
