Poverty Alleviation for Human Rights

China has made tremendous efforts to alleviate poverty and to eventually eliminate it. As it is recognized worldwide, poverty constitutes a challenge to the international community. China, on its part, has won global acclaim for the achievements it has made in poverty alleviation. To provide interested readers with information of the hows and whys, our staff reporter interviewed Hu Fuguo, Vice-Director of the State Council Steering Group in Charge of Poverty Alleviation through Development. New Center for Human Rights Studies

The Shanghai-based Fudan University has launched a human rights studies center. This came at a ceremony on April 21,2002, which also launched the Seminar on Women's Rights and Interests. More than 40 human rights experts, including some from China's Hong Kong Special Administrative Region and some Nordic countries, attended the ceremony to launch the Fudan University Center for Human Rights Studies.

A Balance Between Court Security and Fair Trials:Court Cages in Criminal Cases——Using European Court of Human Rights Cases for Reference

In response to the "cages in courts" issue in criminal trials,after reviewing a series of cases such as "Svinarenko and Slyadnev v.Russia",the European Court of Human Rights has gradually clarified that the "human dignity of the accused and his right to a fair trial are higher than the value of court security",thus found that putting the accused in a cage dock or improper use of a glass cabin dock are in breach of Article 3 and Article 6 of the European Convention on Human Rights,constitutes degrading treatment and violates the right to a fair trial.This position is in line with the international overall trend,which is of significance as a reference for China's courts.Domestic courts should take the initiative to change the current use of the "low fence dock" to further enhance China's judicial civilization.

What State Can Do for Human Rights Education

The human rights education is an educational activity aimed at cultivating the sense of respect-ing human rights. International organizations, non-government organizations (NGOs), the State, local groups, families, schools, communities and citizens all have their respective and irre-placeable roles in it, while the State is the main body responsible for promoting human rights education. At a time when human rights have walked out of scholars' studies and statues of constitutions and laws towards society and life. That is to say, at a time when the slogan of human rights is materialized, there arise some outstanding questions such as: Who are to be the educators? Who are to be educated? What should be taught? How is the education conducted? This article is to present an initial analysis of the issues associ-ated with the State as the major actor in human rights education.
