Every day, I take the same road on my way to the office and back home. Few people know how that road was given its name or ask themselves about its meaning. In my childhood, my grandfather told me about it and other stories about my city's past. That city is Jilin, located in the province of the same name, in the northeast part of China. The Songhua River, in a beautiful wide vista, divides the city into two parts, which is the only city in China that shares the name of the province to  相似文献

RIDING IN STYLE
Beijing is upgrading its bus fleet to make commuting more comfortable and environmentally friendly As part of the Beijing Municipal Government's efforts to promote public transportation, the city is upgrading its fleet of buses to provide the latest in comfort and to meet more stringent pollution emission standards. People may remember a line from the American sitcom Friends describing Beijing buses in 1996 as "easily 200 years old...200 at least." If the cast of the television show paid a visit to China now, however, they would be surprised by the efforts the city has made in the past 10 years. Buses remain one of the major daily transportation modes in Chinese cities, thanks to their low ticket price. People's Daily report-  相似文献

August 1989Hot town, summer in the city, with temperatures in the high 30s. Amazingly enough, the heat is bearable because there is plenty of shade. Nanjing is famous for the plane trees that line its streets and avenues. It's a good thing for people like me who have little vegetation on their heads: we don't have to worry about getting sunburnt on top.1989 being a year when nothing much is being done by way of business, I have plenty of time to travel around different parts of China. Nanjing most certainly is one of the nicer destinations among the places I am visiting. One of the most beautiful features of the city is the Zijin Shan (Purple Mountain) right in the middle of it. Few places I have been to can boast of such an attraction. Miles and miles of woodland to climb, and then  相似文献

MA'ANSHAN, in eastern Anhui Province, is an iron and steel industry based city that has developed since the founding of new China. Ma'anshan is not one of Anhui's largest cities, as regards territory, population, and aggregate economy, yet its per capita major economic indexes have ranked first in the province for successive years. China's huge population dilutes per capita resources, so integrated and coordinated development of the regional economy is vital. Nanjing, capital city of neighboring Jiangsu Province, is just a 30-minute drive away, which has prompted Ma'anshan to take the initiative of merging into the Nanjing Megalopolis* and the Yangtze River Delta Economic Belt* (*see the reference box at the end of the article).  相似文献
