Previous research on the association between violence and biological stress regulation has been largely cross-sectional, and has also focused on childhood. Using longitudinal data from a low-income, high-risk, predominantly African-American sample (n = 266; 57 % female), we tested hypotheses about the influence of cumulative exposure to violence during adolescence and early adulthood on cortisol responses in early adulthood. We found that cumulative exposure to violence predicted an attenuated cortisol response. Further, we tested whether sex, mothers’ support, or fathers’ support moderated the effect of exposure to violence on cortisol responses. We found that the effect of cumulative exposure to violence on cortisol was modified by sex; specifically, males exposed to violence exhibited a more attenuated response pattern. In addition, the effect of cumulative exposure to violence on cortisol was moderated by the presence of fathers’ support during adolescence. The findings contribute to a better understanding of how cumulative exposure to violence influences biological outcomes, emphasizing the need to understand sex and parental support as moderators of risk. 相似文献

The Adolescent Attachment Questionnaire (AAQ), a brief questionnaire to assess attachment characteristics in adolescents, was developed and validated in a large normative sample (n = 691) and a sample of 133 adolescents in psychiatric treatment. The AAQ is a self-report questionnaire consisting of 3 scales of 3 statements each, with Likert-type responses from strongly disagree to strongly agree. The Availability scale assesses the adolescent's confidence in the availability and responsiveness of the attachment figure. TheGoal-Corrected Partnershipscale assesses the extent to which the adolescent considers and is empathetic to the needs and feelings of the attachment figure. The Angry Distress scale taps the amount of anger in the adolescent–parent relationship. All scales demonstrate satisfactory internal reliability and agreement between scores for adolescents (n = 91) from the normative sample who completed the AAQ twice. Adolescents in the clinical sample also completed the Adult Attachment Interview (AAI); the AAQ demonstrated high convergent validity with the AAI. 相似文献

Using self-report data from 157 college students, we tested hypotheses regarding the relative importance of perceived security in early parental relationships vs. security in adult (nonparental) relationships for understanding respondents' coping dispositions and explanatory styles. In general, more secure attachments were positively related to support-seeking and active problem-solving coping styles and to females' but not males' tendency to explain hypothetical successes and failures in a positive or self-enhancing manner. Security of adult (nonparental) attachments had stronger associations with young women's coping strategies than did security of early attachment to parents, whereas the reverse was true for males—a finding we interpret in terms of girls' earlier development of emotional autonomy from parents and closer ties to friends. Security of early attachment to father appeared to have important implications for young men's willingness to turn to others for support. 相似文献

Primary Attachment to Parents and Peers during Adolescence: Differences by Attachment Style 总被引:5,自引:0,他引:5
This study examines the nature of adolescent attachment to parents and peers during adolescence. A projective measure was used to classify 99 11th and 12th grade students into secure, insecure dismissing, and insecure preoccupied attachment groups. Respondents identified their primary attachment figure by nomination and by rating the level of attachment support they received from mothers, fathers, best friends, and boy/girlfriends. On average, parents and peers were equally likely to be identified as primary attachment figures but individual preference was strongly tied to attachment style. Secure adolescents significantly favored mothers over best friends, boy/girlfriends, and fathers. Although secure adolescents with romantic partners rated mothers lower on attachment support, none of the adolescents from this group nominated a boy/girlfriend as their primary attachment figure. In contrast insecure adolescents indicated a strong preference for boy/girlfriends and best friends as their primary target for attachment and nearly a third of dismissing adolescents identified themselves as their primary attachment figure. Findings are discussed in terms of individual differences in attachment during adolescence. 相似文献

Research indicates that insecurely-attached adolescents are at risk for depression, but little is known about factors that
may influence or explain this vulnerability. The present study focuses on close relationships during adolescence and their
association with depression. Specifically, the objectives were to investigate (1) the role of working models of specific attachment
figures (i.e., mother, father, best friend, and romantic partner) in the prediction of depression; and (2) the existence of
target-specific pathways to depression following relational stress. It was expected that the paths to depression would differ
depending on the attachment figure under consideration. A total of 134 adolescents (n = 88 girls; Mage = 16.95 years; SD = .74) completed attachment questionnaires, a depression inventory, and a computer task consisting of
hypothetical interpersonal vignettes and questions. Insecure attachment relationships with romantic partner, and for girls
only, with mother, were uniquely predictive of depression. Insecurely-attached adolescents' tendency to make negative attributions
in response to stresses fully mediated the attachment–depression association. These adolescents were found to ruminate when
confronted with stresses involving romantic partner, which was also associated with depression. Results underscore the link
between attachment, negative attributions, and depression.

Communication between children and parents has been the subject of several studies, examining the effects of, for example, disclosure and secrecy on adolescents’ social relationships and adjustment. Less attention has paid to adolescent deception. We developed and tested a new instrument on lying behavior in a sample of 671 parent-adolescent couples. Analyses on the psychometric properties showed that this instrument had one principal component, and high internal consistency, item-total correlations and inter-item correlations. Lying was moderately associated with other indicators of parent-child communication, the quality of the parent-child relationship, and with parenting practices. In addition, frequent lying was moderately related to behavioral problems and emotional problems.full professor at the Radboud University Nijmegen. Classroom context and school engagement are significant predictors of academic achievement. These factors are especially important
for academically at-risk students. Grounded in an ecological systems perspective, this study examined links between classroom
context, school engagement, and academic achievement among early adolescents. We took a multidimensional approach to the measurement
of classroom context and school engagement, incorporating both observational and self-reported assessments of various dimensions
of classroom context (instruction quality, social/emotional climate, and student–teacher relationship) and school engagement
(psychological and behavioral engagement). Using data from the NICHD Study of Early Child Care and Youth Development, we tested
whether school engagement mediated the link between classroom context and academic achievement among 5th grade students, and
whether these pathways were the same for students with previous achievement difficulties identified in 3rd grade. Participants
included 1,014 children (50% female) in 5th grade (mean age = 11). The majority of the participants were white (77%) and 23%
were children of color. Results indicated that psychological and behavioral engagement mediated the link between classroom
context and academic achievement for students without previous achievement difficulties. However, for students with previous
achievement difficulties psychological and behavioral engagement did not mediate the link between classroom context and academic
achievement. These results suggest that improving classroom quality may not be sufficient to improve student engagement and
achievement for students with previous achievement difficulties. Additional strategies may be needed for these students. 相似文献

Drawing from an ecological assets framework as well as research and theory on positive youth development, this study examined
the relationship of early adolescents’ satisfaction with life to trait optimism and assets representing the social contexts
in which early adolescents spend most of their time. Self-reports of satisfaction with life, optimism, and ecological assets
in the school (school connectedness), neighborhood (perceived neighborhood support), family (perceived parental support),
and peer group (positive peer relationships) were assessed in a sample of 1,402 4th to 7th graders (47% female) from 25 public
elementary schools. Multilevel modeling (MLM) was conducted to analyze the variability in life satisfaction both at the individual
and the school level. As hypothesized, adding optimism and the dimensions representing the ecology of early adolescence to
the model significantly reduced the variability in life satisfaction at both levels of analysis. Both personal (optimism)
and all of the ecological assets significantly and positively predicted early adolescents’ life satisfaction. The results
suggest the theoretical and practical utility of an assets approach for understanding life satisfaction in early adolescence. 相似文献

Stress is known to amplify the link between pubertal timing and psychopathology. However, few studies have examined the role
of peer stress as a context for this link. The present study examined the interaction between perceived pubertal timing and
peer stress on symptoms of psychopathology in early adolescence. The sample consisted of 264 students (63% female; M
age = 12.40, SD = 1.00; 55% Caucasian, 23% African American, 7% Latino, 11% biracial and 4% other). Higher peer stress was associated
with symptoms of anxiety/depression; this effect did not vary by timing or gender. However, early-maturing girls with high
peer stress demonstrated higher rates of relational and overt aggression compared to other girls. Findings also suggested
that late-maturing boys with high stress are at risk for aggression problems; however, due to the small number of boys, analyses
were exploratory. Overall, results suggest that developmentally salient contexts as indicated by stressful peer experiences
may pose unique threats to early maturing girls and possibly late-maturing boys. 相似文献

Stressful transitions in adolescence increase depressive symptoms, especially among girls. However, little is known about
this risk as adolescents mature into young adulthood, especially about how parental support affects depression trajectories
during this period. Using the National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent Health, this analysis investigates the role of gender
in structuring the associations among stressful life events, parental support, and depression. Females reported more depressive
symptoms at the outset of the study, a rank order that persisted along declining depression trajectories into young adulthood.
In addition, stress accounts for the decline in trajectories for females but not males. Support from both parents has a salubrious
effect on mental health, regardless of gender, but this effect dissipates as adolescents age into adulthood. 相似文献

Elkind’s (1967) theory of adolescent egocentrism proposes two distinct, but related, constructs – the imaginary audience and the personal fable. A corollary to the imaginary audience, the personal fable (PF) yields a sense of invulnerability and speciality commonly
associated with behavioral risk-taking. When regarded as a developmental phenomenon, risk-taking is thought to be the result
of cognitive immaturity. However, few adolescent health programs address the egocentric dimension of decision making. We believe
that a valid and reliable measure of PF would aid assessment of risk-taking potential and inform preventive interventions.
The present paper reports the results of a newly constructed measure of PF and its relation to risk-taking behavior. The following
three hypotheses were tested using data from an availability sample of 119 middle school students: 1. PF scores will increase
with age; 2. males will score higher than females on the invulnerability dimension of PF; and 3. PF and risk-taking will be
positively correlated. As predicted, PF scores increased significantly across the age range studied. Of the two PF dimensions,
only invulnerability significantly varied across grades. Males reported significantly higher invulnerability scores than females,
and PF and risk-taking were positively correlated. Suggestions for the implementation of this new and, arguably, reliable
and valid scale are presented.

Same-sex Versus Other-sex Best Friendship in Early Adolescence: Longitudinal Predictors of Antisocial Behavior Throughout Adolescence 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
This study examines the relationship between having other-sex versus same-sex best friends and antisocial behavior throughout
early adolescence. Participants (N = 955) were recruited in 6th grade and followed longitudinally through 7th, 8th, and 11th grades. Participants were 58% ethnically
diverse youth and 48% girls. Results indicate that the frequency of other-sex best friendship remained stable from 6th to
7th grade but significantly increased from 8th to 11th grade. Higher rates of concurrent antisocial behavior were related
to having other-sex best friends in 6th grade but not in 7th grade. In 8th grade, there was an interaction between friendship
and the sex of friends. Boys with only same-sex best friends and girls with other-sex best friends endorsed higher rates of
antisocial behavior. Having other-sex best friends predicted antisocial behavior from 6th to 7th grade and 8th to 11th grade,
especially for girls. Implications for the development of early adolescent friendship and antisocial behavior are discussed.

The current study examined concurrent and longitudinal predictors of early adolescents’ involvement in Internet aggression.
Cross-sectional results (N = 330; 57% female) showed that the likelihood of reporting Internet aggression was higher among youth who spent more time
using Internet-based technologies to communicate with friends and who were themselves targets of Internet aggression. Offline
relational aggression and beliefs supportive of relational and physical aggression also predicted concurrent involvement in
Internet aggression. We used longitudinal data (N = 150; 51% female) to distinguish between youth who were aggressive in traditional contexts only (i.e., school) from those
who were aggressive both online and offline. These results indicated that youth who were aggressive both online and offline
were older at the initial assessment, were targets of Internet aggression, and held beliefs more supportive of relational
aggression than youth who were aggressive offline only. Implications and directions for future research are discussed. 相似文献

Early pubertal timing has been found to confer risk for the occurrence of interpersonal stressful events during adolescence. However, pre-existing vulnerabilities may exacerbate the effects of early pubertal timing on the occurrence of stressors. Thus, the current study prospectively examined whether cognitive vulnerabilities amplified the effects of early pubertal timing on interpersonal stress generation. In a diverse sample of 310 adolescents (M age = 12.83 years, 55 % female; 53 % African American), early pubertal timing predicted higher levels of interpersonal dependent events among adolescents with more negative cognitive style and rumination, but not among adolescents with lower levels of these cognitive vulnerabilities. These findings suggest that cognitive vulnerabilities may heighten the risk of generating interpersonal stress for adolescents who undergo early pubertal maturation, which may subsequently place adolescents at greater risk for the development of psychopathology. 相似文献
