Atoning for Climate Sins

Much to the surprise of climate observers worldwide, China and the United States issued a state-ment announcing to strengthen cooperation to tackle climate change at the 26th UN Climate Change Conference (COP26) in Glasgow, the UK, on November 11. It's an especially bold statement on the part of the U.S., considering that ever since the Donald Trump administration, the of-ficial American position had bordered on the mockery of almost any carbon emission reduction talk.     

THE POINT OF NO RETURN

With nearly 100 gardens and parklands, it is no wonder that Glasgow is known as the Dear Green Place, the perfect place to host the 26th UN Climate Change Conference of the Parties, or COP26. Delegates from some 200 countries are gathering in the British city to discuss ways to upgrade the global response to the world's increasingly profound climate crisis. UN Secretary General António Guterres expressed particular concern over slowing collective action ahead of the meeting. "We need to make sure we reverse the trends, not maintain them. It is now clear we are coming to a point of no return," he said.

Race for Net Zero

'Environmental challenges are not figments of our imagination, but a key issue of mankind's future," Laurent Fabius, former French Prime Minister and one of the leaders who helped turn the 2015 Paris UN Climate Change Conference into a success via the Paris Agreement, said when pointing out what is at stake during a recent webinar. Acknowledging the urgent need for solid actions tackling climate change, the webinar high-lighted the importance of partnerships between governments, the private sector and civil society and the significance of synergy between China, Europe and the United States. Known as the first dialogue of the China-Europe-America Net-Zero Transition Platform, it took place on December 20, two months after the 26th UN Climate Change Conference (COP26) in Glasgow of the United Kingdom, which adopted the Glasgow Climate Pact.

China and New Zealand on January 26 signed a protocol regarding the upgrade of their free trade agreement(FTA) signed in 2008, a full display of China's commitment to multilateralism and an open world economy.

正Private rocket developers in China have taken off, embarking on a long marchChinese private rocket developer, i-Space has successfully completed a test run on a new engine it hopes will power its next test rocket later this year. The breakthrough was made on April 26, just three days before China's launch of Tianhe, the core module for its first permanent space station Tiangong.While visually less spectacular than the launch of Tianhe, the iSpace test run was important for the company as it prepares for its next attempt to send a rocket into orbit.     

A Matter of Continued Consent

正On July 26,visiting U.S.Deputy Secretary of State Wendy Sherman met with Chinese State Councilor and Foreign Minister Wang Yi and Vice Foreign Minister Xie Feng,respectively,in Tianjin.They were further diplomatic engagements between the two countries since their high-level strategic dialogue in Anchorage,the U.S.,in March.

The Chinese economy,with its growth reviving to 6.5 percent in the fourth quarter of 2020,is on track to a full recovery from the pandemic this year.The International Monetary Fund projected that China's economy will grow by 8.1 percent in 2021,according to its latest World Economic Outlook Update released on January 26.Hu Yifan,chief China economist of UBS Wealth Management,is even more optimistic.China's GDP growth this year could rebound to around 9 percent due to a low base in 2020,Hu said at the Forecast of China's Economy for 2021,a recent online discussion hosted by the National Committee on U.S.-China Relations.     

MAPPING OUT SUCCESS

New five-year blueprint lays down specific objectives for a prosperous China On October 26-29,the Fifth Plenary Session of the 18th Communist Party of China(CPC)Central Committee was held in Beijing.There the committee approved proposals for the 13th Five-Year Plan(2016-20)for the national economic and social development and laid out institutional Party reform plans to guarantee more effective governance.

《劳动合同法》第二十六条规定以欺诈、胁迫的手段或者乘人之危订立的劳动合同为无效合同,第三十八条、第三十九条又将因欺诈、胁迫或乘人之危订立劳动合同作为劳动合同解除的情形加以规定,这违背了无效合同不能解除的法理。将以欺诈、胁迫或乘人之危订立的劳动合同规定为可撤销合同可以解决这一矛盾,并能够更好地保护当事人的利益。

As two major countries in the world, China and the U.S. must work together to combat global challenges. At a three-day webinar on China-U.S. relations hosted by the China-U.S. Exchange Foundation and the China Center for International Economic Exchanges from January 26 to 28, the participants examined the main issues in the relationship and the key areas the two should focus on.

A Due Regard for Multilateralism

A World Trade Organization (WTO) arbitrator on January 26 ruled on the case of the United States—Countervailing Duty Measures on Certain Products From China, determining that China may impose trade retaliations against the U.S. with respect to trade in goods in the amount of$645 million annually given the U.S. failure to comply with a WTO ruling in force. China now urges the U.S. to take immediate action to right its wrongs in trade remedy investigations targeting China.     

A Comparison of 9th and 10th Grade Boys'and Girls' Bullying Behaviors in Two States

Abstract

This paper compared the bully behaviors of 250 9th and l0th grade boys and girls in four schools in Texas and Nebraska. Nearly one-third of girls and one-fifth of boys observed bullying often. The most common kind of bullying for both boys and girls was hurtful teasing and name-calling. Boys bullied using more physical violence, while girls reported less; however, both boys and girls indicated they were threatened with harm more than 26% of the time when bullied.

2011年10月26日,浙江省湖州市织里镇发生因当地个别税收代征人员工作方法简单作风粗暴,引起童装业主集体上访而导致的群体性事件。作为劳务输出地基层干部,参加了安徽省赴织里工作组,协助当地党委政府开展工作,事件得到妥善处理。几位参与事件处理的同志受到启发,对当前加强和创新社会管理作了一些思考。
