MEETING OF THE MINDS?

For the first time since regular meetings of the leaders of the world's richest countries were initiated in 1975, Russia, which formally joined the "club" in 1997, assumed the rotating chairmanship of the group this year. July 15-17, the leaders of the Group of Eight (G-8) leading industrial nations met in St.Petersburg, Russia, the old imperial capital, for their annual summit.This marked the first time that Russia has hosted a G-8 meeting,enabling it to set the agenda and highlight its own interests and concerns.     

Repositioning the G-8

Following the recent high-level Group of Eight (G-8) summit in St. Petersburg, Russia, Yuan Zongze, Vice Director of the China International Affairs Research Institute, commented on China's relations with the G-8 in an article in People's Daily. He argued that China is unlikely to join this exclusive club of industrialized nations in the short term, but may establish closer contacts with it In an earlier article, he analyzed the background against which the summit was held, contending that the G-8 has begun to adjust its functions and is seeking to reposition itself.
