Forensic archaeology.

This presentation attempts to demonstrate the value of the use of improved methods in the excavation of buried bodies involved in a criminal investigation. Care in the removal of the skeleton and proper recording will document the interrelationship of all objects found in and around the grave and can, to a certain extent, recreate the event. Carelessness will result in evidence being irretrievably lost. The crime scene investigator's problem, arachaeologically, includes the nature of the remains, dating the time of burial, and techniques of excavation. Archaeological recovery techniques should be adopted in homicide investigation involving buried bodies.     

Forensic entomo-toxicology.

Drugs present in a decomposing corpse may be identified through analysis of maggots feeding off it. Case reports in forensic entomo-toxicology are sparse and the data base is unstructured. Drug concentrations should be measured in residual skeletal muscle, the principal food source for fly larvae, as well as in washed maggots, and the fly species should be determined. An untested possibility is the analysis of puparia or puparial cases which could extend the time frame for analysis into years or even into palaeopathology. In deaths indoors, the analysis of flies known to have emerged from the corpse is a theoretical possibility. To what extent drugs are retained in successive levels of the food chain is entirely unknown; drugs might be detectable in beetles feeding off fly larvae.     

Forensic entomology: application, education and research in Western Australia.

Forensic entomology as a science and a tool for investigation has had slow beginnings in Australia. A number of small animal decomposition trials have been recorded in the literature but mostly from an ecological rather than a forensic entomology perspective. In the last 20 years, a number of more forensically orientated field trials on small pigs and some fly developmental trials in the laboratory have been conducted but lack any replication. The following article was presented at an international seminar to detail the current research in forensic entomology, the applications of forensic entomology in scene of crime (SOC) and homicide investigations and the education of police and judiciary in the discipline of forensic entomology in Western Australia over the last 10 years.
