Tibet After 60 Years

The 60th anniversary of democratic reform in southwest China's Tibet gives Beijing Review an opportunity to present the real Tibet to the world from different angles.Democratic reform in Tibet was a milestone in human history,ending the old social system based on oppression and exploitation of serfs and house slaves,and opening a new chapter for the Tibetan people.

Tibet Takes a Great Leap over Sixty Years

This year marks the 60th anniversary of the founding of the People＇s Republic of China. It is also the 50th anniversary of democratic reform in Tibet. People of all nationalities in China, be they in Beijing or Lhasa, live in peace and prosperity and celebrated the arrival of the National Day falling on October 1. Over the last 60 years a new China that is democratic, harmonious and strong has risen. Over these same years, Tibet, an inalienable part of China, has also gone through great changes.     

Remembering the Past While Reaching for the Future

This year marks the 50th anniversary of Tibet＇s democratic reform. In an act with a farreaching effect and great significance, the Second Session of the Ninth People＇s Congress of the Tibet Autonomous Region recently designated March 28 to thereafter become the annual Serf Liberation Day. Over the past more than 50 years, I have not only borne intimate witness to the final chapter and subsequent abolition of a system of feudal serfdom that had subsisted for more than one thousand years,

LIFTING UP THE PEOPLE

A white paper on democratic reform and the development leap that has taken place in southwest China's Tibet as a result was issued by China's State Council Information Office on March 27,marking the 60th anniversary of the campaign in Tibet.Titled Democratic Reform in Tibet—Sixty Years On,the white paper lauded the drive as "the greatest and most profound social transformation in the history of Tibet.""By abolishing serfdom,a grim and backward feudal system,Tibet was able to establish a new social system that liberated the people and made them the masters of the nation and society,thus ensuring their rights in all matters," the document stated.     

Two Reporters,One Destination

<正>This March 28 marked the 63rd anniversary of the emancipation of serfs in Tibet.Chen Zonglie,born in 1932,was a photojournalist who worked for Tibet Daily from 1956 to 1980,then Beijing Review from 1981 to 1996.He witnessed and recorded the changes in local people’s lives before and after the 1959 democratic reform in the region.Li Nan,born in 1982,is a reporter with Beijing Review.She visited Tibet Autonomous Region every year from 2017 to 2020.     

RELIGIOUS TRANSFORMATION

Tremendous changes have taken place in Tibet in the 60 years since the launch of democratic reform.Abolishing the theocracy changed the previous social structure and conformed to the trend of world progress.The move also satisfied the demand of Tibet's social development,while guaranteeing the political right of people in Tibet to equally participate in state affairs and their autonomous right of managing local and ethnic affairs.This laid a solid social foundation for the modernization and prosperity of Tibet.

China＇s first website focusing on Tibet human fights launches on March 9 to celebrate the 50th anniversary of democratic reforms in Tibet. This website, entitled Tibet Human Rights, is organized by the Chinese Society for Human Rights Studies. It introduces the history of Tibet systematically, shows great human rights progresses of democratic reforms and emancipation of millions of serfs in Tibet. The website also describes the medieval theocratic society under the Dalai Lama＇s power, which is characterized by a combination of political and religious powers, and ruthless political oppression, economic exploitation and violence on human rights of serfs and slaves by the serf-owner class. Through full and accurate facts and figures, photos and videos there, you can learn the human rights developments in Tibet and Tibetans＇ real life.

ON March 28, 1959 an epochmaking democratic reform was unveiled in Tibet, dispelling the darkness of theocracy and serfdom and bringing the light of freedom and democracy to the snowy plateau. Over the following half century Tibet rose from the ruins of feudal serfdom, and with lavish assistance from around the nation, built a sound economy and modem industries full of local character.     

Fiftieth Anniversary of Democratic Reform in Tibet

Tibet has been an inseparable part of China since an t times. THE STARTING POINT

Khesum Village,of about 800 people in southwest China's Tibet Autonomous Region,has a pioneer's place in history,as the first place where democratic reform in Tibet started.On March 28,1959,the Central Government announced the dissolution of the local government of Tibet,marking the end of the centuries-long feudal theocracy system in Tibet and a new start for the plateau region.

Tibet Human Rights Website Attracts Interest

With the arrival of the 50th anniversary of the putting down of a rebellion and democratic reforms in Tibet,China Society for Human Rights Studies launched a Tibet human fights website www.tibet 328.cn on March 30, 2009. This is China＇s first website with human rights in Tibet as its theme. The website has Chinese, English, French and German versions and covers more than 10 sections, respectively human fights conditions in Tibet, truths and facts, Tibetans, basic facts about Tibet, history and the serf system, literature, photos, videos, books and commentaries. The website, themed on ＂Human Rights in Tibet--from Serfs to Modern Citizens,＂ gives an account of Tibet＇s history, culture and serf system, narrates great changes in Tibet＇s human fights field, publishes facts and statistics about the history and existing conditions of human rights in Tibet and tells Tibet human rights stories.
