Union of Local Authorities In Israel Delegation Visits China

正This year marks the 20th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between China and Israel. At the invitation of the CPAFFC, Shlomo Bohbot, President of the Union of Local Authorities in Israel (ULAI) and Mayor of Ma'alot-Tarshiha, led the 12-member Israeli mayor delegation on a goodwill visit to Beijing and Shanghai from March 20 to 27.

Leverage,Technical Efficiency and Profitability: an application of DEA to foreign-invested toy manufacturing firms in China

Based on a representative sample of the 238 largest foreign-invested toy manufacturing firms in southern China by output value, we adopted a two-stage approach to examine the role of leverage on firm performance as measured by technical efficiency, and the effect of efficiency on profitability. In the first stage, we use data envelopment analysis (DEA) to estimate the technical efficiency of the sample firms. In the second stage, we conduct a regression analysis to study the effects of leverage on efficiency and of efficiency on profitability. Our empirical results support the view that leverage has a positive effect on firm technical efficiency and that there is a positive relationship between technical efficiency and profitability.

New Developments in an Old Friendship——An Interview with Charles Madibo Wagidoso,Ambassador of the Republic of Uganda to China

CHINA has long had a close relationship with Africa, and in recent years economic and political ties have grown even stronger. Both the Chinese government and private enterprises have significant investments on the African continent. Last November a 20-member governmental delegation came to Beijing from the central-east African nation of Uganda, to talk to Chinese political and business leaders about fostering economic and cultural links between the two countries. Shortly after the delegation＇s visit, two China Today reporters met with the Ugandan Ambassador, Mr. Charles Madibo Wagidoso, to discuss what was achieved, the ambassador＇s impressions of China and the upcoming Beijing Olympics.

Congress and China Policy: an analysis of China bills

This paper offers a comprehensive analysis of China bills introduced and passed in Congress in 1973–2005. Three important findings emerge. First, many more punitive China bills were introduced and passed in the House than in the Senate. Second, the two congressional parties agreed with each other most of the time on roll call votes related to China. Third, the major events in US–China relations largely determined the ebb and flow of China bills. Negative binomial regression analysis sheds further light on the dynamic of China policymaking on Capitol Hill. A Republican majority in the House facing off with a Democratic president brought about many more China bills. Also, there appears to be a significant gap between public opinion and congressional attitudes on China policy. Finally, the Tiananmen Incident has had a profound impact on Congress, making it much more active and punitive in China policy since then. I conclude the paper by briefly discussing the policy implications of my findings.

China to Boost Economic,Social Development in Tibetan Regions

China＇s State Council held an executive meeting on Oct. 15, 2008, discussing how to support development in the Tibetan regions of Qinghai, Sichuan, Yunnan and Gansu provinces. Tibetan regions in these areas are autonomous where Tibetans and people of other nationalities live together. The regions are the important plateau ecological bar- rier that cover the head-stream area of major rivers, such as the Yellow, Yangtze and Lancang.     

China to Begin RMB-Settlement in HK, Macao and ASEAN

The State Council announced in late December 2008 that in an effort to galvanize circulation, kindle consumption and bolster foreign trade it would allow tentative RMB settlement of goods transactions between Guangdong/the Yangtze River Delta and HK/Macao, and between Guangxi/Yunnan and ASEAN, Prior to this move the central government promulgated a 14-measure package to promote economic development in Hong Kong, the most notable being the permitting of eligible companies in Hong Kong to pay for their transactions in RMB. The new policy is expected to save HK enterprises three percent in exchange commissions, thus enhancing trade ties between the special administrative region and mainland. If successful, it could mark the first step towards RMB internationalization.
