EU Prospects after the European Debt Crisis

The painful throes of the debt crisis placed a spotlight on the European Union. The parliament election of May 2014 saw various extremist candidates come forward to express popular dissatisfaction, and the economy in the Eurozone remains fragile. Though the sovereign debtcrisis has subsided, the effects of the crushing debt will continue for a time and the direction the EU must take in the post-crisis years will be on behalf of a wholly different Europe.

In today's world,many developing countries have the utmost need to develop economy to build up their capacities. I would urge all countries in the world to provide as much support as possible to the economic development of these developing countries, including both equity and debt. I think nation-building and capacity-building is a very important way to create more jobs and to lift people out of poverty in many parts of the world.     

The Future of the EU and Sino-EU Relations

Since the end of 2009,sovereign debt crises have erupted one after the other in Greece,Ireland,Portugal and Spain.Until now,the EU has not been able to keep this run of debt crises in check.Anxieties over the future of the European Union and the eurozone are mounting.American historian Walter Laquer has argued that economic decline,diplomatic weakness,and internal tensions could lead to the collapse of the EU.1 Philip Stephens,columnist for the Financial Times,wrote:"At the opening of the millennium the European Union seemed a confident role model.The assumption was that the postmodern multilateralism symbolized by the euro would be exported to rising nations and regions.Now there are questions as to whether Europe itself can hold together."2 This paper aims to understand the current situation and the future of the EU by examining the European sovereign debt crisis and its socio-political impact on European integration.It also analyzes the reasons behind the worsening of the debt crisis,the future of European integration,and China's policy toward Europe.

In recent years,China has gained fruitful achievements in investment and infrastructure construction cooperation with countries along the proposed Belt and Road routes.At the same time,the West has begun to attack the Belt and Road Initiative(BRI)with fallacies,of which“China’s debt-trap diplomacy”is a typical example.By putting the blame for the debt crisis of some developing countries on China,it tarnishes China’s international image and creates obstacles for the BRI.Therefore,it is particularly necessary to have a thorough understanding of the cause and effect of the“China’s debttrap diplomacy”narrative,to refute its erroneous nature and reveal the real root causes of the current debt crisis in many developing countries.

The Eurozone is the world＇s first ever single-currency region made up of different sovereign states. Because there are no other historical models to learn from, its stability has been a contentious issue. With no end in sight for the sovereign debt crisis, academic circles have been focusing on the Eurozone＇s future. This article analyzes a number of responses for overcoming its current difficulties and seeks to predict future outcomes based on these analyses.

China and the U.N. Convention on the Law of the Sea

After nine years of negotiations by 155 countries and international entities,the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (Hereinafter referred to as the "Convention") was opened for signature on December 10,1982 in Montego Bay,Jamaica.The Convention lays down a comprehensive regime of law and order in the world's oceans and seas,establishing rules that govern all uses of the oceans and their resources.It is known as the "constitution for the oceans" and its historical position is second only to the United Nations Charter.2012 is the 30th anniversary of the signing of the Convention and the 18th anniversary of its entry into force.It is also the 30th anniversary of China's accession to the Convention and the 16th anniversary of its entry into force for the country.At this monumental moment in history,it is worthwhile to review China's contribution to the achievement of the Convention and reflect on the pros and cons of China vis-à-vis the Convention,so as to better explore ways and means of addressing future problems.
