Inside High Walls——Prisons in Shanghai and Suzhou

The article is based on a visit to the Tilanqiao, Qingpu and Women's prisons and a juvenile delinquent rehabilitation center in Shanghai and the Suzhou Prison of Jiangsu Province in February 2001 by the author, a graduate student of human rights. SHANGHAI THROUGH FOREIGNERS’EYES

Beijing Review has conducted a survey on how foreigners view the city, sometimes referred to as China’s Big Apple. Survey respondents included: an anonymous 30-year-old UK male, who has lived in Shanghai for five years and works for an import company focused on high-end market products; Steve Bisogno, a 28-year-old American, who resided in Shanghai from 2001 to 2004, working there as a teacher at the Sydney Institute of Language and Commerce and as a writer, while attending Shanghai International Studies University (he is now a commercial underwriter for a European insurance firm based in New York and contributing writer to Beijing Review); Australian Elyse Singleton, 33, who has been in Shanghai since 2001 (on and off), working as a freelance writer and designer; Sami Zabel, from Maryland, U.S., who studied in Shanghai for half a year in 2006 after graduating from a U.S. college; and an anonymous 43-year-old U.S. male from Maryland, who works as a business consultant and is married with two children.     

Shanghai Free Trade Zone—— China＇s Opening-up Is Turbocharged

THE State Council passed a comprehensive plan to set up a free trade experiment zone in Shanghai. On August 26,the Standing Committee of the Na- tional People＇s Congress, China＇s top legislature, discussed the plan and its ramifications on fiscal policy. And on September 29, the Shanghai Pilot Free Trade Zone hung out its shingle.     

Migrant Farmer-Workers Becoming New City Residents

The investigation group of the China Society for Human Rights Studies (CSHRS) went on a study tour of Shanghai Municipality and Wuxi, Zhenjiang and Changzhou of Jiangsu Province June 23-30, 2004 and found that the four cities had made gratifying achievements in protecting the rights and interests of migrant farmer workers and a large number of such workers are becoming new city residents of a number of cities

50 Years of a Think Tank
