Youth Delegation of Secours Populaire Francais Visits China

At the invitation of the CPAFFC, a 30-member youth delegation of the Secours Populaire Francais (SPF) visited China from August 10 to 18, 2008. Through organizing the Chinese and French young people to watch the Olympic Games together, the visit aimed to enhance understanding and friendship and promote the Olympic spirit. During their visit, the delegation went to Gansu Province to attend the inauguration of the Friendship Water Cellars built with the SPF's fund, watched Olympic games together with the students coming from the Dongqi Middle School of Hanwang County, Mianzhu City which suffered severe damage in the Sichuan earthquake and the Beijing No. 22 Middle School, and participated in the Chinese and French youth social activities.     

Repackaging the Traditional to Compete with the Modern

LAST January a traditional Chinese theatrical costume show titled Dayu Huashang (Feathered Dress and Gorgeous Skirt) was staged in Jinan, the provincial capital of Shandong. Now it's set to venture further a-field: the show's producers have signed up to bring their recently forged cultural brand to the US, Canada, Germany, France and Singapore. Cultural brands boost a locality's image, and they're profitable, too. Many of China's provinces and autonomous regions have therefore decided to develop their own unique cultural brands, and promote them abroad. For instance, Yunnan Province has staged Dynamic Yunnan (a local amateur performance), and Sounds of Nature in Yunling (an interpretation of a large-scale original folk performance); Henan Province has put on Shaolin in the Wind (a romantic tragedy performed by the well-known Shaolin monks); and Guizhou Province has presented Wind of Colorful Guizhou (a large-scale ethnic song-and-dance performance). Each introduces to international audiences the characteristics of local folk customs and cultures.

Afanti,a legendary hero who fights for the poor against miserly land barons,is the leading character of the best-known Chinese animation series after his name.The cartoon image of Afanti,a humorous and wise Uygur man riding a donkey,is a lasting childhood memory for many Chinese. Qu Jianfang,director of the animation series and designer of the cartoon image of Afanti,was therefore given the name of"Father of Afanti."He was also the first to get Chinese cartoons into the international market and one of the forerunners of exploring the animation derivative market in China. During the Third China International Cartoon and Animation Festival held in Hangzhou,Zhejiang Province,in late April,Qu sat down with Beijing Review reporter Lu Ling to share his views on the development of China's cartoon and animation industry and his experiences introducing Chinese cultural works to the Western market.Excerpts of this interview follow:     

GROWING PARTNERSHIP

Visiting Chinese President Hu Jintao and his Zambian counterpart Levy Patrick Mwanawasa (far right) study a model of the Chambisi Copper Mine after jointly inau-gurating an economic and trade cooperation zone in Lusaka on February 4. The zone, located in Zambia's Copper Belt Province, is designed to form a pro-duction chain with the Chambisi Copper Smelter as the core enterprise. It is the first project of its kind launched by China in Africa. At the Beijing Summit of the Forum of China-Africa Cooperation last November, the Chinese side promised to set up three to five such cooperation zones on the African continent over the next three years to further strengthen bilateral trade exchanges. The establishment of the zone is expected to boost the development of Zambia's light industry, increase local exports and create job opportunities. During his recent eight-nation African tour, President Hu reiterated that the Chinese Government encourages Chinese enterprises to increase their investment in Africa, in particular in those areas that have a direct bearing on the livelihood of African people.
