The Future of Eritrea

The fate of Eritrea was left open in the 4-Power talk in Paris,and this articles may help to explain the reasons. It is anabridgement of a lecture at a meeting with the Royal EmpireSociety of the 29th May. Brigadier Longrigg was Administratorbetween 1942–4, and he has written a History of Eritrea,which was reviewed in our last number.     

The Development of African Agriculture

This article was delivered as a lecture at a joint meeting withthe Royal Empire Society on the 29th October, Col. C E. Ponsonbybeing in the chair. The speaker, who should be well known toreaders as a reviewer, is a member of the department of agriculturein the University of Oxford, where he went after many years'service in Uganda.     

ERIC NEWBY,THE HINDU KUSH AND THE GANGES

Hugh Carless was Oriental Secretary in the British Embassy in Kabul and then in the Embassy in Tehran in the 1950s. In 1956 he accompanied Eric Newby on their journey to the Hindu Kush. Later he was British Ambassador to Venezuela and a member of the Council of this Society.

This is the edited text of the lecture which he gave to the Society on 21 March 2007.     

Studies in War-time Organisation: (6) East African Command.

This is an abridgement of a lecture which Gen. Platt gave onthe 31st October at a combined meeting with the Royal EmpireSociety. It has been included in the series on wartime organisationbecause the East Africa Command is possibly the most remarkableexample of the impact of war in the whole of the African Continent.Gen. Platt was, of course, G.O.C., 1941–44.     

Some Impressions of East Africa To-day

Mrs. Huxley has just returned from an extended visit to EastAfrica, in particular to Kenya, where her girlhood was spent.This is a lecture which she delivered at a combined meetingat the Royal Empire Society with Lord Hailey in the Chair, on30th July. It raises some very wide questions of colonial policy,even though she describes it herself as "rather disjointed andpersonal".     

Are Missions a Menace?

The well-known Oxford philosopher and controversialist was inSouth Africa for nine months in 1930. The article representsthe main part of a lecture given at the Royal Empire Societyon the 24th November with Lord Hailey in the chair. Fr. Martindalebegan by apologising for the limited nature of his experience.

The Managing Director of the United Africa Company was responsiblefor the original idea of this vast new public project. He deliveredthis lecture at the Royal Empire Society on the 26th March underthe chairmanship of the Rt. Hon. John Strachey, M.P., Ministerof Food.

This lecture was given at the Celebrating Ari Sitas: the World of Work and the Power of Poetics, Global Studies Programme (GSP) conference, September 4 & 5 2017, at the Centre for African Studies Gallery, University of Cape Town.     

Two Aspects of Rhodesian Economy: 1. Africa's Industrial Revolution

These two articles in a sense complement each other: the firstis the greater part of the lantern lecture by the British industrialiston the 26th November, the second by a man who saw war-servicein Eastern and Central Africa, and is keenly concerned for humanrelations there.     

The Effects of Urbanisation in South and Central Africa

This represents the bulk of a lecture on the 10th July, underthe Chairmanship of Lord Hailey. Mr. Rheinallt Jones is Presidentof the South African Institute of Race Relations, and Advisoron Native Affairs to the Anglo-American Corporation.     

Education in Africa

This article represents the larger part of a lecture by theformer Principal of Makerere at a joint meeting with The RoyalEmpire Society on the 26th January, W. E. F. Ward, AssistantAdviser on Education, being in the chair. Mr. Turner, who isnow Headmaster of Charterhouse, was Master of Marlborough beforegoing to Africa in 1939.     

OMAN: A CENTURY OF OIL EXPLORATION AND DEVELOPMENT

This is the history of the search for, and eventual discovery of, oil in Oman, from the first geological survey in 1925 by George Lees and his party through to modern times. For many years survey work was hampered by disputes between the tribes and the Sultan. Then bad luck with the Fahud-1 well in 1957 meant that it was not until 1963 that oil was finally struck in the Natih field. Oil quickly became the mainstay of the Omani economy. This is the slightly edited text of the lecture which he delivered to the Society on 20 February 2008.
