How Well Do We Know Max Weber After All? A New Look at Max Weber and His Anglo-German Family Connections

Guenther Roth's study places Max Weber in an intricate network of ties among members of his lineage. This paper presents core findings of Roth's analysis of Weber's family relations, discusses the validity of Roth's core theses and some of the implications of his analysis for Weber as a person and scholar, and addresses how Roth's book may influence future approaches to Weber's sociology.     

School History Textbooks and Historical Memories in Japan: A Study of Reception

Memory wars in Asia still revolve around Japan. Much has been discussed on the so-called ky??kasho mondai (history textbook controversies), yet, not much has been explored on the domestic social function of history textbooks per se. Emphasizing creators of history narratives (and their production), the field tends to overlook the audience, or, receivers in the process. In this article, by referring to the original interviews with Japanese college students, I question the very assumption of the creator?Creceiver connection. How are history textbooks perceived as a source for promoting Japanese people??s underlying historical consciousness? How have they been utilized in schools? Are they useful? If so, how? If not, why? I argue that in the case of Japan, how people reflect upon history issues is not necessarily the function of school history textbooks as often assumed, making a strong case for the importance of receivers in the analysis of public discourse.

留守儿童:青少年权益保护和犯罪预防的重点群体

在论及中国青少年权益维护和犯罪预防工作中,我们不能不将视角转向农村留守儿童这一当今典型的社会现象和需要特殊关注的弱势群体。据有关方面提供的数据,我国共有2亿农民工,其中外出农民工数量为1.2亿左右,外出务工的农民工与其未成年留守子女的分离,由此而形成了高达2000万的农村留守儿童群体,且呈继续增长的趋势。在一些农村劳动力输出大省,留守儿童在当地未成年人总数中所占比例已高达18%至22%,他们的父母能够在1至2年内回家的仅占58%,2到3年内回家的占56%,而3年以上的达到26%。在这些农村留守儿童中,多数是与老人生活在一起,有4.9%的孩子甚至是独自一人生活。     

留守儿童的权益保护及其法律对策研究

留守儿童问题已成为当前倍受社会关注的热点问题。主耍表现在监护弱化、教育障碍和人身安全保护小力等问题上，而这些问题极易引发事端，特别容易使未成年人在不良环境的影响下滋生不良行为和严重不良行为，从而导致犯罪。我们应当加大法律政策的宣传和执行力度；依法确定相关主体的保护责任；不断完善法律制度，强化政府效能；在以人为本的教育理念下，努力消除教育差别，建立儿童公平的受教育运行机制，使农村留守儿童问题在法律调控的机制下得到有效的解决。

从中日少年案件处理流程与矫正之比较看少年司法模式

日本存在三类对非行少年的相应法律制度：刑事司法制度、少年保护与儿童福利行政制度,少年法院在制度的连接与案件分流中起主导作用;中国的关于未成年人犯罪与严重违法案件的对应制度可两分为刑事司法系统之内与刑事司法系统之外。案件的处理与分流成流线型．最终进入刑事司法系统中的案件为涉嫌犯罪的未成年人案件。通过对于中日两国实然少年案件处理流程与矫正的比较得出结论：制定和实施具有司法法性质的少年法是实现少年司法制度独立的关键。     

社会工作介入少年司法制度之探究

中国少年司法制度的改革与完善离不开专业社会力量的参与和介入,而社会工作专业尤其是司法社会工作的快速发展为其介入少年司法制度提供了可能。然而在司法实践中人们对社会工作专业介入少年司法过程的必要性尚未形成清晰的认识。对此问题的讨论,必须从宏观上关注三个问题：一、少年司法的指导理念;二、少年司法的法律依据;三、少年司法制度构建的社会条件。然后再观察社会工作的专业属性是否与之契合并是否能够服务于中国少年司法制度的完善。同时社会工作介入少年司法的具体领域也需要进一步探讨。     

In the Name of the Cause: Women's Work in Secular and Religious Terrorism

The article begins by providing a brief history of the involvement of females in the conduct of modern terrorism and discusses the different ideological mindsets that account for their becoming more involved in terrorism associated with ethno-separatist rather than religious concerns, with an eye to the fact that the trend shows unmistakable signs of changing. Secondly, it considers the structure of logic, or systems of contention, that secular and religious groups employ in attempting to legitimize women and girls offering themselves up as martyrs, and discusses what mechanisms they share for doing so. The thesis of this paper is that secular and religious terrorism, though seeking to create significantly different worlds, one modern, the other traditional, fall back upon many of the same rhetorical strategies to justify females engaging in political violence, especially the rhetoric of martyrdom. The Sri Lankan nationalist-based Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) is highlighted as the secular example and Hamas and Islamic Jihad as the religious ones.
