Risky sexual behavior poses significant health risks by increasing sexually transmitted infections and unintended pregnancies. Previous research has documented many factors related to risky sexual behavior. This study adds to the literature by proposing a prospective, developmental model of peer factors related to risky sexual behavior. Developmental pathways to risky sexual behavior were examined in a sample of 517 individuals (51 % female; 82 % European American, 16 % African American, 2 % other) followed from age 5–27. Structural equation models examined direct and indirect effects of peer rejection (assessed via peer nominations at ages 5, 6, 7, and 8), affiliation with deviant peers (assessed via self-report at ages 11 and 12), and delinquency (assessed via maternal report at ages 10 and 16) on risky sexual behavior (assessed via self-report at age 27). More peer rejection during childhood, affiliation with deviant peers during pre- adolescence, and delinquency in childhood and adolescence predicted more risky sexual behavior through age 27, although delinquency at age 16 was the only risk factor that had a significant direct effect on risky sexual behavior through age 27 above and beyond the other risk factors. Peer rejection was related to subsequent risk factors for girls but not boys. Peer risk factors as early as age 5 shape developmental pathways through childhood and adolescence and have implications for risky sexual behavior into adulthood. 相似文献

The involvement of adolescents with deviant peer groups is one of the strongest proximal correlates to juvenile delinquency
and stems from a variety of causes. Past research has linked ineffective parenting with peer variables, including deviant
peer group involvement and peer conflict during adolescence. In this study, adolescents’ appraisals of procedural justice
within the family (adolescents’ appraisals of how fairly they are treated by parents in the process of resolving family conflict)
were examined as one aspect of effective parenting that may relate to deviant peer group involvement in early adolescence.
Data from 1660 middle school students (ages 11–14, mean = 12.6) indicated that higher appraisals by adolescents of procedural
justice during family conflict resolution were related to lower levels of both peer conflict and deviant peer group involvement.
A structural model was tested in which the relationship between adolescents’ appraisals of procedural justice in the family
and deviant peer group involvement was partially mediated by measures of peer conflict. This model was found to have adequate
fit to the data, indicating that part of the relationship between procedural justice appraisals and deviant peer group involvement
can be explained by levels of peer conflict. Implications of these findings are discussed.

This study examined concurrent and lagged effects of deviant peer association on levels of alcohol use for distinctive trajectories
of drinking from ages 14–18 years, while controlling for age, paternal education, community size, and conduct problems. Longitudinal
data were available from a secondary data archive of male and female German adolescents (N = 1,619). Conditional latent growth mixture modeling analysis indicated consistent concurrent effects of deviant peer association
(specified as time-varying covariate) on alcohol use for the regular users group, but not any of the other drinking trajectory
groups. Very few lagged effects of deviant peers association on alcohol use were found, and thus the social influence hypothesis
received little empirical support. Overall, findings suggest the need to consider heterogeneity in the study of peer characteristics
and alcohol use for both male and female adolescents.

There is broad agreement that neighborhood contexts are important for adolescent development, but there is less consensus about their association with adolescent smoking and alcohol use. Few studies have examined associations between neighborhood socioeconomic contexts and smoking and alcohol use while also accounting for differences in family and peer risk factors for substance use. Data drawn from the Seattle Social Development Project (N?=?808), a gender-balanced (female?=?49%), multiethnic, theory-driven longitudinal study originating in Seattle, WA, were used to estimate trajectories of smoking and alcohol use from 5th to 9th grade. Time-varying measures of neighborhood socioeconomic, family, and peer factors were associated with smoking and alcohol use at each wave after accounting for average growth in smoking and alcohol use over time and demographic differences. Results indicated that living in more socioeconomically disadvantaged neighborhoods, lower family income, lower family general functioning, more permissive family smoking environments, and affiliation with deviant peers were independently associated with increased smoking. Lower family functioning, more permissive family alcohol use environments, and deviant peers were independently associated with increased alcohol use. The effect of neighborhood disadvantage on smoking was mediated by family income and deviant peers while the effect of neighborhood disadvantage on alcohol use was mediated by deviant peers alone. Family functioning and family substance use did not mediate associations between neighborhood disadvantage and smoking or alcohol use. The results highlight the importance of neighborhood, family, and peer factors in early adolescent smoking and alcohol use. Future studies should examine the unique association of neighborhood disadvantage with adolescent smoking net of family socioeconomics, functioning, and substance use, as well as peer affiliations. Better understanding of the role of contextual factors in early adolescent smoking and alcohol use can help bolster efforts to prevent both short and long harms from substance use. 相似文献

While prior research has examined family, school, and peer factors as potential predictors of problem behavior, less attention
has been given to studying when these factors are most predictive of problems and if and when changes in these factors signal
risk. Using annual data on a community sample of 1,040 individuals (47% female; 81% White), this study models growth in risk
and protective factors during two developmental periods (Grades 5–8 and Grades 9–12) in order to predict substance misuse
and crime at age 19. For protective factors of positive relationships with family and positive bonds to school, both the levels
of these factors at Grade 5 and change between Grade 5 and Grade 8 predicted substance misuse and crime in early adulthood.
Higher likelihoods of both forms of problem behavior also were predicted by increases in the risk factor of exposure to negative
peers between 5th and 8th grade. In the late adolescent period, levels at 9th grade of all risk and protective factors examined
predicted both substance misuse and crime. Also, increases in exposure to negative peers in late adolescence predicted greater
likelihoods of both forms of problem behavior, while greater risk of substance misuse was predicted by decreases in school
bonding and academic achievement, and greater risk of crime was predicted by worsening relationships with family. The results
add to prior research by indicating that in addition to the level, change in risk and protective factors during these two
stages of development can be signals of risk and are promising targets for intervention. 相似文献

Although much is known about peer victimization, the majority of the longitudinal research in this area has been restricted to Western settings. The main objective of this study was to examine the interpersonal (rejection) and personal (withdrawal, aggression) antecedents and consequences of victimization for Chinese children living in Hong Kong. A sample of 1,058 children (501 boys; M age = 9.5 years) in Hong Kong was followed longitudinally from the 3rd and 4th grades to the 7th and 8th grades. Consistent with a transactional framework, rejection and withdrawal contributed to, as well as resulted from, victimization. Although victimization predicted later aggression, aggression was unrelated to later victimization. These findings closely replicate past research conducted in North America and European settings, and suggest considerable correspondence in the links between maladaptive child characteristics and victimization across Western and Hong Kong schools. 相似文献

Previous studies have indicated homophily in depressive symptoms among adolescent friends, resulting from both peer selection
and socialization processes. However, developmental differences and the role of school transitions in these processes have
not been elucidated. A sample of 367 (51% female) adolescents was followed from 6th to 11th grade to investigate prospective
relationships between adolescents’ and their friends’ depressive symptoms in middle school and in high school. Results revealed
that students selected friends with similar levels of depressive symptoms after each school transition. Additionally, friends
appeared to socialize adolescents to become more similar in depressive affect in late middle school years. These findings
suggest normative selection effects after school transitions, followed by socialization effects in middle school, but not

Drawing from an ecological assets framework as well as research and theory on positive youth development, this study examined
the relationship of early adolescents’ satisfaction with life to trait optimism and assets representing the social contexts
in which early adolescents spend most of their time. Self-reports of satisfaction with life, optimism, and ecological assets
in the school (school connectedness), neighborhood (perceived neighborhood support), family (perceived parental support),
and peer group (positive peer relationships) were assessed in a sample of 1,402 4th to 7th graders (47% female) from 25 public
elementary schools. Multilevel modeling (MLM) was conducted to analyze the variability in life satisfaction both at the individual
and the school level. As hypothesized, adding optimism and the dimensions representing the ecology of early adolescence to
the model significantly reduced the variability in life satisfaction at both levels of analysis. Both personal (optimism)
and all of the ecological assets significantly and positively predicted early adolescents’ life satisfaction. The results
suggest the theoretical and practical utility of an assets approach for understanding life satisfaction in early adolescence. 相似文献

Few studies have explored the possible contribution of the peer group to dating violence victimization. The current study
tested the hypothesis that a risky lifestyle would mediate the relationship between deviant peer affiliation and dating violence
victimization among adolescent girls. The proposed mediation model was derived from lifestyles and routine activities theories.
A sample of 550 girls (mean age = 15) drawn from a larger representative community sample in Quebec, Canada, completed a questionnaire
on three forms of dating violence victimization (psychological, physical, and sexual). Results revealed that girls with a
higher level of affiliation with deviant peers were more likely to endorse a risky lifestyle and reported higher rates of
all forms of dating violence victimization. Further analyses showed that, while deviant peer affiliation is associated with
dating violence victimization, this relationship may be explained, at least partially for psychological violence, and completely
for physical/sexual violence, by the girls’ own risky lifestyle. Future preventive interventions for adolescent dating violence
victimization should target deviant peer groups, as well as adolescent girls who display a risky lifestyle. 相似文献

Social anxiety in adolescents has frequently been linked to negative outcomes from social interactions. The present study
investigated whether socially anxious adolescents are treated negatively by their classmates and which characteristics of
socially anxious adolescents could explain negative social responses. Classroom observations of class behavior were made during
oral presentations of 94 students (60% females) in the ages of 13–18 years. Speakers’ social performance, speech quality,
and nervousness during the presentation were also rated. Findings showed that the social performance of socially anxious students
was a predictor of class behavior, whereas their overt nervousness was not. Surprisingly, the quality of their speech was
negatively related to class behavior. Implications of these findings for the treatment of socially anxious adolescents are

Understanding the developmental precursors to civic involvement in emerging adulthood is important to help cultivate and sustain youth's civic involvement. Guided by Bronfenbrenner's ecological theory of human development and social capital theory, this study examined the pathways that link childhood neighborhood attributes, changes in family and school social capital during adolescence, and civic involvement in emerging adulthood. Three waves of data from the National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent Health (n?=?7,209, 54?% female, 63?% white, 18?% African-American, 11?% Hispanic) and multi-level models were used to examine the research questions set forth in this study. Findings revealed that increases in family and school social capital during adolescence had direct influences on emerging adult's civic involvement 7?years later. The effect of childhood neighborhood attributes was only weakly mediated by family and school social capital. However, the expression of family and school influences on emerging adult's civic involvement was found to differ by neighborhood groups, gender, and race. These results help to illustrate the importance of examining multi-contextual as well as demographic influences on civic involvement in emerging adulthood. In addition, the results from this study can inform efforts to strengthen the theory of adolescent civic involvement and policies on how to educate youth and communities on civic involvement and its benefits. 相似文献

The interrelationship of family and peer experiences in predicting adolescent problem behaviors was examined in an 18-year longitudinal sample of adolescents (N = 198) from conventional and nonconventional families. Positive associations among early childhood predictors and adolescent problem behaviors were consistent with problem behavior theory. The most powerful predictors of teen drug use and delinquent behaviors were similar behaviors by peers. Peer behaviors, however, were in turn predicted by earlier family-related variables and the quality of peer relationships in childhood. This study provides supporting evidence that strong peer effects in adolescence reflect even earlier processes in childhood and highlight the importance of linkages from early childhood experiences in family and peer contexts to the development of problem behaviors in adolescence. The current study draws upon ecodevelopmental theory to identify protective and risk factors that may influence emotional
distress during adolescence. Hierarchical regression analyses were used to examine the relationship among family obligations,
school connectedness and emotional distress of 4,198 (51% female) middle and high school students who were primarily (59%)
European American. The overall model explained 21.1% of the variance in student emotional distress. A significant interaction
effect was found indicating that school connectedness moderated the relationship between family obligations and emotional
distress. Specifically, for students with low to moderate levels of family obligations, a stronger sense of school connectedness
was associated with lower emotional distress. The buffering effect of school connectedness was weakened as the level of family
obligations increased and completely disappeared for students who experienced high levels of family obligations. The creation
of a program that takes a holistic approach, in order to curtail the levels of highly emotionally distressed adolescents,
must continue to address the ever changing demands that adolescents encounter and prepare youth to deal with functioning within
multiple contexts and do so while maintaining emotional well-being. 相似文献

Adolescent networks include parents, friends, and romantic partners, but research on the social learning mechanisms related
to delinquency has not typically examined the characteristics of all three domains simultaneously. Analyses draw on data from
the Toledo Adolescent Relationships Study (n = 957), and our analytic sample contains 51% male and 49% female as well as 69% white, 24% African-American, and 7% Latino
respondents. Parents,’ peers,’ and partners’ deviance are each related to respondents’ delinquency, and affiliation with a
greater number of deviant networks is associated with higher self-reported involvement. Analyses that consider enmeshment
type indicate that those with both above average romantic partner and friend delinquency report especially high levels of
self-reported involvement. In all comparisons, adolescents with deviant romantic partners are more delinquent than those youths
with more prosocial partners, regardless of friends’ and parents’ behavior. Findings highlight the importance of capturing
the adolescent’s entire network of affiliations, rather than viewing these in isolation, and suggest the need for additional
research on romantic partner influences on delinquent behavior and other adolescent outcomes.

Existing measures of peer pressure and conformity may not be suitable for screening large numbers of adolescents efficiently, and few studies have differentiated peer pressure from theoretically related constructs, such as conformity or wanting to be popular. We developed and validated short measures of peer pressure, peer conformity, and popularity in a sample (n = 148) of adolescent boys and girls in grades 11 to 13. Results showed that all measures constructed for the study were internally consistent. Although all measures of peer pressure, conformity, and popularity were intercorrelated, peer pressure and peer conformity were stronger predictors of risk behaviors than measures assessing popularity, general conformity, or dysphoria. Despite a simplified scoring format, peer conformity vignettes were equal to if not better than the peer pressure measures in predicting risk behavior. Findings suggest that peer pressure and peer conformity are potentially greater risk factors than a need to be popular, and that both peer pressure and peer conformity can be measured with short scales suitable for large-scale testing. 相似文献

From a longitudinal sample (n = 957; 49.9% male; 77.3% White/non-Hispanic) of participants studied from infancy through age 15, adolescents’ depth of engagement
in, and quality of romantic relationships were predicted from early and contemporaneous parent–child interactive quality and
peer social competence. High quality maternal parenting and peer experiences prior to and during adolescence tended to be
negatively associated with the depth of engagement in this domain for the full sample, yet positively associated with the
quality of adolescents’ romantic relationships for the sub-set of individuals currently dating at age 15. Results reconcile
contrasting views of the origins of romantic relationship engagement and quality and the positive versus negative developmental
