China Museum of Ethnic Culture

To have some understanding about the culture and art of China's 56 ethnic groups, people don't have to travel around the country. Now they can go to the China Museum of Ethnic Culture, which is a showcase of traditional architecture, folk customs, songs and dances, handicrafts and delicacies from all over China. Located in the Asian Games Village in Beijing, the museum consists of a 10,000-sq-m exhibition hall, a 4,000-sq-m relics storehouse and 200 life-sized buildings of 40 ethnic group…

I was invited to attend a small seminar on The Future of Printed Media held in 798 district three months ago.I was overwhelmed to see the huge former military complex reorganized as an art district with totally new social dimensions.The district reinterprets China for me,as a country more international,more fashionable and more innovative than I formerly believed.It seems to me that China has recognized that art is an essential element of culture and a way for people to identify themselves.     

Evolution of the System to Honor Ethnic Minorities'''' Rights

What system should a multinational state adopt to resolve ethnic minority problems and ensure the rights of minorities? This is a major problem that has to be settled. There are roughly three options: confederacy, autonomy and power sharing. The former Soviet Union adopted the form of confederacy. That was determined by the fact that during the October Revolution, many ethnic groups were in a state of entire separation and isolation. In his speech in 1989, Chinese leader Deng Xiaoping said: We owe the stable and united situation in the areas inhabited by ethnic minorities to Chairman

Help for Xinjiang or A Knockout Blow?

Born and growing up in Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, I felt a sense of unfairness between the Han people like me and the ethnic minority groups living there. Many of my classmates from the ethnic minorities had at least one sibling, but most of the Hans didn't. Though the one-child policy prevailed at that time, the ethnic minorities were exempted.     

Snuff bottles

Snuff bottles first appeared in China in the Ming dynasty (1368-1644) and, as their name suggests, were originally indeed used as a container for snuff tobacco, first of all by the Manchu, Mongols and Tibetans. The reason for their popularity at that time is to be found in the customs of those ethnic minorities: because those ethnic groups mainly led a nomadic life that entailed frequent use of hay or firewood. Zaju Opera of the Yuan Dynasty

THE dominant genre of the Yuan Dynasty （1271-1368） was Zaju, an opera based on, northem melodies. The Yuan was the first united monarchy in Chinese history be ruled by an ethnic minority, and under it drama in general grew into a mature form of performance art.     

Ethnic Museum of the Central University for Nationalities

THE Central University for Nationalities Ethnic Museum houses over 20,000 cultural relics relating to China's 56 ethnic groups. The majority of these are traditional costumes and ornaments that examplify expertise on the part of ethnic minorities in weaving, dying, embroidery and tannage. Some are decades, and others centuries old. Exhibits such as the gifts to Chairman Mao Zedong and the central government in the early days of the People's Republic from the Panchen Lama, Dalai Lama, and ethnic minorities across China are of great political and historical significance.

Media Art Comes to Beijing

MEDIA art has a very short history on China＇s mainland,where more traditional forms such as painting and sculpture tend to hold sway.So the arrival of a major survey of global media art practice at Beijing＇s National Art Museum of China（NA- MOC）set the local art world abuzz in the lead up to the Olympic Games. What is media art？Broadly defined, it is art that utilizes contemporary technology and/or reflects upon the role of technology in modem life.Zhang Ga, a China-born,New York-based artist, curator and teacher,has made it his mission to bring the latest media art practices to China over the past few years.     

Boin to Dance

It was at the London premier of Bravo China! that I first saw her. She was performing Soul of the Peacock and it seemed to me not an artist but a bird - a graceful peacock with a small elegant head and proud gait - that danced before me. Four years later I met Yang Liping, arguably the most famous folk dancer in China, in person. She is of the Bai ethnic minority that lives in southern Yunnan Province.     

La Bella at Marella

There are different types of collectors: those who buy for investments, those who buy for aesthetic pleasure and those who have a real interest. AN opening night at the Marella is usually a big spread. So it was recently when the Beijing gallery opened a show of young Chinese artists which mixed irreverent social commentary with ceramic breasts and other human forms. Marella usually makes the biggest splash among the dozen or so openings every Saturday at Beijing's redbrick 798 art colony in the city's northerly Dashanzi district. Onlookers gawked as artists, media and collectors spilled onto the foopath with paper cups of Italian wine and plates of hors d'oeuvres at the recent opening party for Fancy Dream, a collection of works by young Chinese artists shown by the Marella, an Italian-owned art firm with galleries in Milan and Beijing.

The Chinese Government has always been keen to promote human rights in the interest of the country's 55 ethnic minority groups, regarding this as vital to promote the country's human rights cause as a whole.
