THE concept of a "center" is one of the most distinctive characteristics of China's traditional culture, and is reflected in the design of the country's ancient cities like Beijing. While the traditional layout of the capital is still evident, in contemporary times the Olympic Games have seen the capital's ancient backbone extended northward.  相似文献

CHINA'S stepped-up commitment to expanding her energy infrastructure is official. Premier Wen Jiabao, in astatement at the 2009 National People's Congress, redefined the direction of the country's energy strategy and development goals, clarifying that nuclear, hydroelectric, wind and solar power are all the focus of new projects. China's green energy campaign is unprecedented both on the industrial and legal fronts, and not surprising, since the country is one of the world's major energy consumers.  相似文献

THE rise of individual Chinese companies to leadership positions in global competition is already well known. Lenovo is the world's largest PC producer. Haier is the world's largest household goods manufacturer. Huawei is the second largest producer of telecommunications equipment. Forbes magazine ranked ICBC as the world's overall number one company in 2013 by combined revenue, assets, profits and market capitalization.  相似文献

THIS year is set to be the most competitive ever for employ- ment-seeking college gradu- ates. Nearly seven million will pour into China's job market, the highest number ever in the history of the People's Republic. Like the increasingly alarming air quality, this year's tough job market is a frequent topic and source of frustration.  相似文献

IT'S springtime in Hainan, literally in terms of the season, but also figuratively in terms of an ongoing era of rebirth for the tropical island. Hainan is China's southernmost territory, and the nation's smallest province in terms of land area. Size is no reflection of status, however. The island is famous as a holiday resort of azure skies, bright sunshine, fresh air and unspoiled beaches.  相似文献

A SCENDING the ancient stone steps to Red Gate Gallery reveals the quintessential Beijing pan orama. The gallery is housed in Dongbianmen Watchtower, a Ming Dynasty structure straddling the last crumbling vestiges of Beijing's city wall. Like a besieged bastion of the city's imperial past, the watchtower is hemmed in by railway lines and Beijing's Second Ring Road. The glass and steel edifices of the CBD loom in the distance. It's appropriate that this ancient fortress, surrounded by a cornucopia of modern development, houses a gallery that has long been a cultural bastion of a more contemoorary kind.  相似文献

THE recent publication of America's second quarter GDP data, following that for China, makes it possible to accurately compare the recent performance of the world's two largest economies and the results are extremely striking. In the last year the slowdown in the U.S. economy has been far more serious than in China. Therefore while both economies are being adversely affected by current negative trends in the world economy, China is dealing with these much more successfully than the U.S. In light of media discussion about China's economic "slowdown" it is equally important that attention is paid to understanding why the U.S.'s own economic slowdown is much worse than China's when confronted with similar global economic trends.  相似文献

CHINA's individual agricultural economy based on private ownership was transformed into cooperative economy based on public ownership between 1949 and ' 1956. During this time span the "communistic commune;" the "col ective farm"and the "people's commune" successively appeared in rural areas. In 1958, shortly after Chairman Mao Zedong said, "It is good to establish people's communes," the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China established people's communes throughout the country. Documents at that time stated: "The realization of communism in our country is not a thing of remote future. We must actively establish people's communes and explore a concrete way to communism." By the end of October 1958, more than 26,000 people,s communes housing 120 million rural households -- 99 percent of all rural households in China - had been set up.  相似文献

ACCORDING to the National Statistics Bureau, China's gross energy consumption in 2009 mounted to 3.1 billion tons of standard coal, confirming China's image as a real powerhouse of global energy consumption. Although its per capita consumption is still low - the equivalent of 2.33 tons of standard coal in 2009 as compared to 10.37 tons in the United States, unfortunately China's energy composition is dominated by coal, whose utilization is currently inefficient. Then there are its other drawbacks - the scars and stresses sustained by environments during mining and burning. Hence,  相似文献

THE topic of China's policy of reform and opening-up is invariably associated with Deng Xiaoping, the famous politician and great state leader who initiated China's transformation from a rigid planned economy to a free economic system. Deng Xiaoping is not only considered to be the father of China's reform and opening-up, but also credited with implementing reforms that laid the foundation for the breathtaking economic success that we can see in China today.  相似文献

EXTREME textiles is a name we might associate with a carpet that can report the footsteps of an intruder or the heat of a fire (don't laugh; they exist!). But that's not the sort of extreme we have in mind when discussing Chris Bucktey's work. It's more along the lines of Mathilda McQuaid's lecture on high-tech textiles at the Copenhagen Conference "Avantgarde - Innovative Cooperation Between Craft and Businesses."  相似文献

A Clean Drive
SHANXI is well known as a major source of the energy driving China's social and ecorromic development. The province supplies a quarter of the nation's coal, two-fifths of its coke and one- 17th of its coalgenerated electricity. And as anywhere in the developing world, the boom of its energy and chemical industries, two of the mainstays of the.local economy, has come at a cost to the environment and the region's resources.  相似文献

On February 28, 2008, the State Council Information Office published a white paper entitled China's Efforts and Achievements in Promoting the Rule of Law. This document is the first white paper published by the government on China's rule of law. It contains eight chapters and six appendices to review China's achievements on the road to practicing the rule of law in a compre- hensive way, and to expound the official Chinese policy and position on this is- sue. With some essential points inside, the publication of this white paper is of great significance, especially this year, to China's rule of law, human rights prog- ress, and its communication and dialogue with the international community.  相似文献

China's Judicial Reform
The rule of law is not a strange concept in Chinese history. In recent decades, it has been a guardian for China's reform and opening-up, as well as the nation's modernization drive. The Fourth Plenary Session of the 18th CPC Central Committee focused on the rule of law to lay a solid foundation for perfecting the country's judicial system.  相似文献

China's independently developed moon rover, which will be used during the second phase of the Chang'e lunar probe program, is a genuine feat of engineering, capable of overcoming virtually any obstacle it is likely to encounter on its upcoming mission to explore the lunar surface. "The rover will unfold and stand on its wheels automatically before proceeding with its exploration tasks once it gets out of the spacecraft," said Mao Ming, head of the China North Vehicle Research Institute, which is in char.cle of the rover's development.  相似文献
