To explore this theme, NPQ spoke with René Girard, the famous anthropologist and author of the seminal study Violence and the Sacred. We then asked Pankaj Mishra, one of the most exciting new non-fiction writers and author of An End to Suffering: The Buddha in the World , to respond.

北京时间2010年1月13日5时，中美洲国家海地发生里氏7．3级大地震。美好家园瞬间坍塌，一时间，残垣断壁、哀鸿遍野。灾情危急!太平洋彼岸的中国北京迅速行动。同日晚8点，肩负祖国和人民的重托，满怀国际人道主义精神的中国救援队乘坐专机毅然启程，经过20个小时颠簸劳顿抵达海地，并立即展开救援工作。法国媒体惊叹道，第一批抵达海地的救援人员，居然是中国人！比“近在咫尺”的美国人整整早了两个小时!     

The Future Is Upon Us

T he race is on between environmental destruction on a global scale and sustainable solutions . T he finish line, in J ared D iamond's alarmed estimation, is only 50 years away . D iamond, too, hopes our civilization will learn from those in history who rose to their challenges and prospered, not suffer the fate of others who dithered and collapsed .     

What Past Is Present?

The article deals with new modes of representation of Croatian contemporary history. It argues that the Croatian grand narrative of the twentieth century is presented as the continuous fight of Croats for their nation-state. All historical events in the narrative are appraised as beneficial or harmful only in how they contributed to the creation of the state. The pattern of representation in heavily ethnocentric. The constructed self-image of the Croatian nation portrays Croats as humiliated and repressed by various others in the twentieth century. Croats are represented as the victims of other national groups and of history. The notion of historical responsibility is nonexistent for the analysed period.     

Consumer Society Is the Enemy

Anyone within range of Western television during the 1960s to the 1980s was likely a fan of Jacques Cousteau's famous "underwater adventures" launched from the Calypso research vessel, which roamed the seven seas.
Not surprisingly, as an explorer immersed in the natural environment, Cousteau became a radical ecologist in his later life as the costs of industrialization and consumerism began to take their toll. In the summer of 1996 I sat down with the famed oceanographer at the Paris offices of the Cousteau Society.     

Secularism Is a Women's Affair
