Instead of running away, she stood to attention with arms akimbo and gave a serious smile. The giant wooden basket on her back almost made her fall as she tried to straighten her body. When I raised the camera, Yang Jiaxiu was walking along a narrow, muddy mountain path in a virgin fir forest, carrying about 50 kilograms of water. She twisted her body to pour the water into a large tank when she finally arrived at her house. Then the Miao woman put down the  相似文献

I feel certain that in one of my mom's past lives she was Chinese and had her own restaurant. You could not tell this by looking at her of course, but her passion for cooking is proof enough for me. This is further endorsed by the magnitude of dumplings in our house. Whenever I come home the refrigerator is loaded with mom's homemade dumplings or their Slavonic cousins, known as vareniks. When I visited Beijing for the first time in October 1999 I  相似文献

While Chinese goods are going down well with U.S. consumers, the trade benefits remain a bone of contentionWhen Vanessa Caceres spoke to her husband about having to cut costs because of their newborn baby, it's understandable. When she mentions her husband's 12-year-old son and 20-year-old daughter still living with them in a modest townhouse in the Washington, DC suburbs, her financial situation becomes clearer, as  相似文献

LETTERS
I read China Today with great interest, especially Language Corner at the end of the magazine. One thing I would like to be able to do is use my computer for word processing in Chinese. I use it for practically everything else, but I don't know any way of entering Chinese into a word processor.  相似文献

A dozen years ago, Deng Ming went to Meizhou, Guangdong, where he stayed with a local Hakka family. When a Hakka girl, 15 or 16 years old, offered him a cup of tea, he noticed that her hands had been roughened by hard work. The girl was neither pretty nor lively, but her smile was pure and innocent, reflecting her sincerity. This touched the painter deeply. "I felt that the girl was just like the tea she held in her hands: clear and sweet," Deng reflects. He later created a painting depict…  相似文献

ZHANG Xin returned from a trip to Yunnan with a haul of fresh goods. Barely pausing for breath she snapped each item with her digital camera and uploaded the shots onto her infant e-store, attaching an appealing caption to each one. Last month, her e-store sprouted its first tooth of profit. "Though the profit margin is small, I enjoy this way of doing business," says Zhang Xin. Zhang deals in special local  相似文献

Linguists and the government hope to preserve the diversity of China's languages When Xu Shixuan, a linguist from the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, returned to a southwestern county bordering Myanmar in 2002 to study the local language after a nine-year interval, she was struck by the change to Li Xuewen, a master storyteller in the village. THE aftermath of spectacular success is often a look back over the shoulder, and Chinese entrepreneurs-cum-philanthropists are busy trying to give back to their societies. As it turns out, corporations are discovering philanthropy is a lot more complicated than they thought. When life was simple, the donor could see where the donation went. When donors and benefactors rubbed elbows, good was done, and seen to be done. But these are the days of "big charity" - the needs may be great or small, or the beneficiaries far or near, but the management of foundations is complicated now; it isn't easy to follow the money and it isn't all about money anymore.  相似文献

When the network age just started, many netizens thought everything was virtual in the net. A man may vilify others in the name of a woman; a poor man may play games and make friends as a wealthy man. Now, networks are so closely connected with the real society that the network cannot be separated from it. Anyone who wants to get something clear, he could resort to crowdsourcing to seek answers.
