Libyan Aspirations

This article is a lecture delivered by a former member of theCivil Affairs Branch, Middle East, at a combined meeting withthe Royal Empire Society on the 27th November. It is designedin some sort as a companion to Brigadier Longrigg‘s analysisof Eritrea, published in African Affairs for October, and itmay also be read with Dr. Evans-Pritchard’s Italy andthe Bedouin in Cyrenaica in the journal for January 1946.

Medicine in Africa as I have seen It

Nigeria's Federal Parliament

Senator Daldry, the only expatriate member of the Nigerian Senate,gave the following address at a joint meeting of the Royal AfricanSociety and the Royal Commonwealth Society on July 2, 1960.Sir John Macpherson, a Member of the Council, and a former Governorof Nigeria, took the chair.

The speaker, who should be well known toreaders as a reviewer, is a member of the department of agriculturein the University of Oxford, where he went after many years'service in Uganda.     

Saudi Arabia: the ‘arab street’, the media and popular agitation since September 11

Dr Mai Yamani studied Anthropology at Bryn Mawr and Oxford. She has taught at King Abdul Aziz University in Saudi Arabia, and lectured widely in the Middle East, Europe and the United States. She is currently an Associate Research Fellow at the Royal Institute of International Affairs, where she has participated in conferences in the Middle East Programme. In February 2003 she, with others in the RIIA Programme, published Iraq, the Regional Fallout, which is available on the RIIA website. She has written numerous articles and her book, Changed Identities: the Challenge of the New Generation in Saudi Arabia (Royal Institute for International Affairs, 2001) was reviewed in the February 2002 issue of Asian Affairs.     

Towards The Future in Ghana

Interview: Fatma Khafagy

Dr. Khafagy is a women's rights activist in Egypt, where she currently works as a policy expert for the German Cooperation Agency. Prior to that she was a legal/policy expert for the European Commission Project on the Economic Role of Women in the Mediterranean Region and also headed the Office of Ombudsperson for Gender Equality at Egypt's National Council for Women. She worked for 15 years for the United Nations, including as head of the Gender and Development Program of UNICEF in Egypt. Dr. Khafagy has long been associated with various NGOs and is currently a board member of the Alliance for Arab Women. She was interviewed for Middle East Policy by Roger Gaess ( AQABA9@aol.com ) and Eva Soriano, freelance journalists based in New York.

Enemy of the State: A Conversation with Ilan Pappé

Israeli academic Ilan Pappé first came to prominence in the 1980s as a member of Israel's "New Historian" movement, which chronicled the war crimes and ethnic cleansing against the Palestinians in the first Arab-Israeli war of 1948. Dr. Pappe teaches political science at Haifa University and is the academic director of the Research Institute for Peace at Givat Haviva. He is currently writing a second edition of his most recent book , A History of Modern Palestine, One Land, Two Peoples (2004). The following interview was conducted by Don Atapattu, a free-lance writer in London .

Malaysia: the making of a grand design

Anthony Stockwell is Professor of Imperial and Commonwealth History at Royal Holloway, University of London. He was President of the Royal Asiatic Society in 2002–2003 and is currently a Vice-President. His publications include British Policy and Malay Politics during the Malayan Union Experiment (1979) and, as editor, British Documents on End of Empire: Malaya, 1942–1957 (three parts, 1995). He has been joint editor of the Journal of Imperial and Commonwealth History since 1990. This is a version of a lecture delivered to the Royal Society for Asian Affairs on 26 February 2003.
