This article examines Zoë Wicomb’s wide-ranging use of intertextuality in the novel Playing in the Light to explore the links between identity construction and postcolonial authorship. Focusing on the characters as intertextual agents, I argue that the three coloured women on whom the novel focuses – Helen, Marion, and Brenda – use texts in distinctive ways that illuminate their struggles to position themselves in South Africa’s complex and changing racial landscape. Racial “passing” is one form of a larger pattern in the novel of the use of citation and imitation to achieve specific ends. By embedding the citations of Helen and Marion within the citation-rich narrative of Brenda, Wicomb lays bare the mechanisms of identity construction within a work that stages and highlights its own intertextual practices.  相似文献

Abstract

During thirty-six years of Japanese colonial rule, millions of Koreans left their homeland to live in exile in China and Russia. The best devoted themselves to a struggle against Japan that lasted until 1945. Beginning with the “Righteous Army” that resisted Japanese aggression before the annexation in 1910 and whose survivors retreated to fight in Manchuria, through the massive March First Independence Movement and the subsequent establishment of a provisional government in Shanghai in 1919, through years of terrorist attacks, armed battles, and guerrilla resistance in China, Koreans struggled and fought, suffered torture and ruin, rotted in prison, and died for the liberation of their country. This struggle produced numerous individuals with extraordinary careers of intense involvement in the revolutionary tides sweeping Asia in this century. Although there are many Korean language accounts of their lives, for decades only one book in English, Song of Ariran, has rendered the emotional flavor of their sacrifices and adventures. Ramparts Press has reissued this volume, first published in 1941, with useful editing and annotation by George Totten and further reminiscences by the original author, Helen Foster Snow (Nym Wales). It is the tale of the life of Kim San, a minor but by no means insignificant figure in the anti-Japanese struggle.  相似文献

Music heritage in cities has become a significant area of interest in the twenty-first century because it is linked to profitable music tourism and a growing cultural economy. Melbourne, the Victorian state capital, is used as a case study; in March 2013, the city was unofficially crowned Australia’s music capital because it, at the time, had the most music venues and a vibrant music economy. However, this paper argues that this identification is somewhat ahistorical for two reasons. Firstly, it leaves out the colonial and gold rush prehistory of Melbourne’s music culture. Secondly, it omits the critical recognition of Melbourne’s (and Australia’s) first international music superstar exports, such as opera diva Dame Nellie Melba (nee Helen Porter Mitchell), who was named after her home town of Melbourne, and pianist prodigy and composer Percy (Aldridge) Grainger. Drawing on a textual analysis of government policies, economic reports, and the work of historians, musicologists and journalists, this paper synergises the history of Melbourne’s music culture from its colonial beginnings in 1835, until 1927, when the city was no longer Australia’s political capital. It identifies four early stages of Melbourne’s musical development, which laid the foundations for iconic music venues, Australia’s first opera company, music entrepreneurs, and the initial nurturing of the nation’s first music superstars in Melba and Grainger.  相似文献
