Children’s Perceptions of Intimate Partner Violence: Causes,Consequences, and Coping 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Children’s appraisals of conflictual and aggressive parental interactions mediate their effect on children’s adjustment. Previous
studies have relied almost exclusively on self-report questionnaires to assess appraisals; consequently we know little about
perceptions that occur naturally when children witness interparental aggression. This study employed a semi-structured interview
to assess the thoughts and feelings of 34 children (ages 7–12) whose mothers were receiving services at domestic violence
agencies, and mothers reported on interparental aggression that took place in the home. Children’s thoughts centered on consequences
and efforts to understand why fights occurred. They generally viewed their mother’s partner as responsible for violence, though
a significant number viewed both parents as playing a role. Sadness and anger were more common than anxiety, and children
often attempted to stop or withdraw from fights or both. When asked why family violence occurs, most focused on perpetrators’
lack of control of anger or personal characteristics, but approximately one-third viewed victims as provoking aggression.
These findings support the idea that children actively attempt to understand the causes and consequences of interparental
violence and suggest that their perceptions and interpretations are important for understanding the development of beliefs
regarding the use of violence in close relationships. 相似文献

The goal of our study is to determine whether a person’s cognitions regarding violence against women and violence against
children within the family are associated with recourse to violent behavior toward them; and (2) the extent to which an adult
who has a narrow conception of violence against women also has a narrow conception of, tolerant attitudes toward, and biased
attributions with regard to violence toward children. Thirty men and 32 women took part in the study. Generally speaking,
respondents more easily recognized physical aggression than psychological aggression, rated it more severely, and used it
more often against their children than their spouses. Further, cognitions regarding violence against women and of parental
violence against children appear to be strongly associated. Our results also suggest that the conception of violence toward
women is associated with violence toward children. 相似文献

Violence and Aggression in the Lives of Homeless Children 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
The present research examined the role of violence and aggression in the lives of children in homeless families, focusing
on possible connections among family violence, children's aggression, and children's problems with social isolation and rejection.
Measures were obtained from structured interviews with 93 sets of mothers and children. Consistent with past research, average
estimates of specific violent incidents experienced by mothers (as adults) were quite high. Measures of this family violence
were reliably correlated with children's behavior problems as well as with measures of aggression in peer relationships (victimization,
ease of resolving fights with friends). Finally, results of regression analyses were most consistent with a model in which
family violenceand economic distress contributed to problematic aggressive behaviors among children; that aggression, in turn,
appeared to lead to social isolation and avoidance. The overall results emphasized the need to address violence and aggression
in any intervention programs for homeless children and families. 相似文献

Prior research has provided substantial evidence that child maltreatment and exposure to physical intimate partner violence
(IPV) are associated with increased externalizing behavior problems among children and adolescents. However, little is known
about the effects of exposure to psychological IPV and exposure to the physical abuse of a sibling. Using a total sample (N = 2,572) and subsample (n = 441) of children ages 3–18 years old, the purpose of this study was to assess whether cumulative types of family violence
lead to higher mean externalizing behavior scores and to examine the effects of single types of indirect and direct family
violence on children’s mean externalizing behavior scores. Results confirmed that children who experienced any type of family
violence victimization had higher mean externalizing behavior scores compared to children with no history of family violence;
however, few differences in externalizing behavior scores were found as the number of family violence types increased. Children
who experienced indirect types of family violence (e.g., exposure to the physical abuse of a sibling) had higher externalizing
behavior scores than children who experienced direct maltreatment (e.g., child physical abuse). Findings from this study suggest
that researchers and service providers should adopt a broader conceptualization of family violence victimization and increase
the amount of services provided to children who are indirectly victimized. 相似文献

Recent scholarship in social psychology suggests that individuals with an elevated sense of self-esteem may respond aggressively
or violently when this heightened egoism is threatened. The present study explores differences in self-esteem, aggression,
and violent behavior among a sample of 644 male state prison inmates. The results indicated that Black inmates expressed higher
levels of self-esteem than White inmates. Although Blacks and Whites did not differ on a psychological measure of aggressive
personality, Black prisoners reported more violent behavior than Whites. Moreover, high self-esteem predicted violent behavior
inside prison, but only for Whites. This finding suggests that the relationship between high self-esteem and violence may
be race-specific. 相似文献

Using data obtained from women’s shelter residents, male and female students, and male prisoners, this study investigated
the association between non-violent controlling behaviors, physical aggression, and violence towards a spouse (N = 264). It was predicted that only men and women involved in intimate terrorism (Johnson, Violence Against Women, 11(12):1003–1018, 2006) would use controlling aggression, and that physical aggression used by those involved in situational couple violence would
be unrelated to controlling behavior. Contrary to predictions derived from Johnson’s theory, regression analysis showed that
control accounted significant proportions of the variance in the use of physical aggression for all three relationship categories.
Some support was provided, however, as it was found that the pattern of both interrelationships of the five types of controlling
behaviors, and control and physical aggression, supported Johnson’s distinction. 相似文献

The role of low self-esteem in aggressive behavior has been questioned by theorists who claim that inflated, rather than deflated,
self-esteem is associated with violence, and that societal efforts to increase self-esteem may actually increase, rather than
decrease, violent behavior. This conjecture was tested in two treatment samples of partner violent men, one (n = 61) that received a behavioral intervention, and one (n = 107) that received a workshop program designed to enhance compassion for self and others. Both samples reported significant
reductions in relationship violence perpetration and significant increases in self-esteem from pre- to post-treatment. In
both samples, change in self-esteem was inversely correlated with change in physical aggression. Follow-up data from victims
were available for one of the samples, and revealed that self-esteem and its enhancement during treatment did not significantly
predict relationship violence during the year after treatment. These results indicate that self-esteem enhancement during
treatment for partner violent men is correlated with violence reduction, and does not increase the risk for subsequent relationship
aggression. 相似文献

The perceived acceptability of sibling aggression as a function of personal experience was investigated. Participants read
a scenario depicting sibling aggression and rated the perceived acceptability of the hypothetical siblings’ behaviors. Following
ratings, participants completed a measure to describe their childhood experience of sibling aggression and violence. Findings
supported the hypotheses that men were more accepting of sibling aggression, and that being a perpetrator of sibling aggression
was associated with increased perceived acceptability of such behavior, especially for women. For men, being the victim of
sibling violence was also associated with higher rates of perceived acceptability. 相似文献

Aggression during incarceration impacts on parole release decisions. However, research examining the link between aggressive behaviour in custody and violence post-release is limited, particularly in relation to adult violent offenders. Several factors complicate the use of institutional aggression as a marker of risk for future violence, including environmental causes of aggressive behaviour and adaptation to prison. This study explored the association between aggressive behaviour in prison and violent recidivism post-release in a sample of 148 adult male violent offenders. Prisoners with three or more aggressive incidents recorded in prison incurred a violent charge more often and sooner after release than those with no aggressive incidents, when controlling for age, ethnicity, length of incarceration and risk for future violence. Subjects with one or two aggressive incidents were not at increased risk of violent recidivism. These findings suggest that institutional aggression can be used to identify individuals at risk of violence following release but only when repeated aggressive behaviour is evident. Importantly, some prisoners who were not aggressive in prison were charged with violent offences post-release and some prisoners with three or more aggressive incidents were not violent following release, highlighting the complexity of using in-prison aggression as a marker for violent recidivism. 相似文献

Episodes of husband-to-wife violence in which the husband consumed alcohol were compared with episodes of husband-to-wife violence, reported by the same individuals, in which the husband was not drinking. Among this community sample of newlyweds, wife reports, but not husband reports, indicated that violent episodes in which the husband was drinking included more acts of violence and were more likely to involve severe violence. Both wife and husband reports indicated that wives were more likely to be physically aggressive in husband drinking episodes compared to sober episodes. However, whereas wives reported that their aggressive behavior was a response to husband aggression, husbands reported that wives were more likely to initiate violence in these episodes. Violent episodes that include alcohol may be more severe and more mutually violent than sober episodes. Discrepancies between husband and wife reports may reflect differences in recall or self-serving biases. 相似文献

A coordinated community response system to the help-seeking behaviors of domestic violence victims is critical to minimize the impact of violent events and to educate the public, so that safe and effective conflict management skills may replace violent responses. The focus for the present study is to identify and analyze victims’ choices of law enforcement assistance in stopping the violence and/or aid through the services of the regional family violence center. Some victims select legal channels of support; others rely exclusively on social service support, and others seek assistance from both sources. Characteristics of victims whose cases followed two types of help-seeking behavior patterns—legal support or social support–were determined through archived data from both the records of a regional family violence center (FVC) (n=258) and domestic violence incident reports of a police department serving a city of approximately 200,000 citizens (n=127). Findings indicate that African American victims more frequently sought protection through law enforcement sources than they did through family violence center services, and the reverse was true for Euro-Americans. 相似文献

Investigators who study intimate partner violence have long recognized a relationship between exposure to violence in the
family of origin and subsequent offending and victimization in the family context. This relationship holds not only for direct
exposure (i.e., experiencing violence), but also for indirect exposure (i.e., witnessing violence against a parent or sibling).
Typically, this relationship has been attributed to a social learning process that results in the intergenerational transmission of family violence. In this study, we explore intergenerational transmission in a sample of 816 married women in Bangkok, Thailand to determine
how childhood exposure to violence in the family of origin is related to intimate partner perpetration and victimization during
adulthood. Our results show that there are indeed long-term and significant effects of childhood exposure to family violence
on the likelihood of Thai women’s psychological and physical intimate partner perpetration. However, these effects appear
to be indirect. Additionally, our results demonstrate a direct association between childhood exposure to parental intimate
partner violence and subsequent psychological and physical victimization in adulthood. 相似文献

Growing up in a violent home predisposes children to a host of behavioral and emotional difficulties. This study examined
whether perpetrator and victim gender have an impact on depressive symptoms and aggressive behavior for victims of child physical
abuse (CPA) and also with regard to witnessing interparental violence (IPV). This study also examined whether witnessing siblings
being abused would elicit high levels of depressive symptoms and aggressive behavior. College students (n = 675) were assessed for both exposure to IPV and child physical abuse prior to age 18. Participants completed measures of
depression and aggression. With regard to victims of CPA, participants victimized by both parents and those victimized by
mothers only had significantly higher levels of aggression. For depressive symptoms, females having both parents as perpetrators
or fathers only had significantly higher depressive symptoms. With regard to witnessing IPV, being abused by both parents
was associated with endorsement of more aggression and depressive symptoms. With regard to witnessing sibling violence, the
results were similar to those found for victims of CPA.

The purpose of the present article was to determine the ability of cognitive factors (beliefs and attitudes) and adverse childhood
experiences to predict men’s reactions towards their spouses’ violence. To do so, 120 males who had referred to family court
to seek divorce due to spouses’ violence were randomly selected and an author’s -made questionnaire containing 27 subscales
was administered to them. Four of the 27 subscales comprised of 22 questions regarding “types of reactions towards spouses’
violence”, “attitudes towards spouse”, and “experiencing family violence during childhood”. Our results showed that witnessing
violence during childhood could positively predict reactions such as “cessation of relationship” and “reprisal”. Men’s beliefs
regarding “permission to use violence” could positively predict reaction such as “cessation of relationship”. Furthermore,
factors such as “Believing his wife is more knowledgeable” and “Wife’s Physical Appearance” negatively predicted reactions
such as “Cessation of relationship” and “Tolerance”. Also “Man’s perceived career success” positively predicted the reaction
of “Attempts to Resume Relationship”. These results are discussed in the context of the existing literature. 相似文献

Although attachment and interpersonal problems are associated with intimate partner violence (IPV), their interrelationship
in predicting IPV has not been examined. The present study examined whether hostile dominant interpersonal problems (i.e.,
domineering, vindictive, and intrusive) mediate the relationship between attachment (anxious and avoidant) and IPV (violence
severity and psychological aggression) in a sample 100 partner violent men. Several meditational analyses were conducted based
on Baron and Kenny’s (1986) model for mediation, including the bootstrap analysis of the sampling distribution of the indirect effect. Significant results
indicated that (a) hostile dominant interpersonal problems mediated the relationship between avoidant attachment and violence
severity, and (b) hostile dominant interpersonal problems mediated the relationship between avoidant attachment and psychological
aggression. Hostile dominant interpersonal problems did not mediate the relationship between anxious attachment and violence
severity or psychological aggression. Implications of the findings for the treatment of IPV are discussed. 相似文献

The play of young children has long been used clinically to understand children’s experiences and inner feelings. More recently,
children’s play has been examined quantitatively to understand differences due to varying backgrounds, family relationships,
etc. Forty preschool children (21 girls and 19 boys) aged 27 to 71 months from families with histories of domestic violence
were observed using a play interview, The MacArthur Story Stem Battery, to determine if severity of violence, frequency of
visitation with their previously violent fathers, and mother-child relationship functioning impacted how parents were represented
in play. Overall, girls represented their parents more positively regardless of other family circumstances. Boys, especially
those who did not visit regularly with their fathers, had negative representations of their mothers. Severity of violence
did not predict negative parental representations in the sample. 相似文献

This study examines the effects of child abuse and domestic violence exposure in childhood on adolescent internalizing and
externalizing behaviors. Data for this analysis are from the Lehigh Longitudinal Study, a prospective study of 457 youth addressing
outcomes of family violence and resilience in individuals and families. Results show that child abuse, domestic violence,
and both in combination (i.e., dual exposure) increase a child’s risk for internalizing and externalizing outcomes in adolescence.
When accounting for risk factors associated with additional stressors in the family and surrounding environment, only those
children with dual exposure had an elevated risk of the tested outcomes compared to non-exposed youth. However, while there
were some observable differences in the prediction of outcomes for children with dual exposure compared to those with single
exposure (i.e., abuse only or exposure to domestic violence only), these difference were not statistically significant. Analyses
showed that the effects of exposure for boys and girls are statistically comparable. 相似文献

This study analyzes the role of trauma and disrupted attachments in the development of adolescent girls’ violent behavior.
A grounded theory approach was applied to the narratives of 24 young women (age 13–16 years old) who were adjudicated and
remanded to custody for an assault or robbery. Three types of loss were inductively derived from the data (death of a loved
one, physical absence, and psychological unavailability) as were two categories of violence (in the home and in the community).
Findings suggest that extensive losses and violent experiences disrupted the young women’s attachment to their caregivers,
and these experiences were disregarded or inadequately addressed. Detachment and the absence of supportive others left the
young women poised to engage in a variety of maladaptive behaviors including violence. Theoretical and programmatic implications
are discussed. 相似文献

Child-to-parent violence is a social problem that is qualitatively different from other types of family violence, since adolescents direct their violence toward those who should represent authority and provide for their welfare. One of the goals of this study was to analyze the importance of the quality of family relationships and different strategies of family discipline with regard to violent or prosocial behavior of adolescents toward their parents. Structural Equation Modeling was used to test a model of violent behavior towards parents. Participants were 585 children aged between 12 and 18 from eight schools in the Basque Country (Spain). Positive family discipline and supervision were not associated with lower levels of violence against parents. Family relationships had direct effects on child-to-parent violence, and power-assertive discipline showed a mediating effect in that association. It seems that affectivity and quality of family relationships are the most important aspects for preventing violent behaviors. 相似文献
