Sights in and around Nanning

Qingxiu Mountain Called the"lung"of the city,Qingxiu Mountain is about 10 kilometers southeast of Nanning,and comprises 18 ridges covering an area of four square kilome- ters,The Longxiang Pagoda,a symbolic structure atop the mountain,was first built during the Wanli Reign(1573-1620)of the Ming Dynasty,but was destroyed by war.It was rebuilt in the mid-1980s and become the highest and largest pagoda in Guangxi.A panoramic view of Nanning can be seen from the top of the pagoda. The address is No.19 Qingshan Road.To get there,take bus No.t0 or 34,or Ring Route 1 or 2,and get off at the Qingxiushan stop.Admission price:RMB 15.     

Tales of two cities

Railway construction in recent years has opened up many formerly inaccessible parts of southwest China. I mentioned in a previous article how Guangdong's San-MaoRailway greatly improved travel in the province's southwestern areas. The project has helped to shorten journey times to Nanning, capital of the Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, from the Pearl River Delta. For many years that city's main line was the one from Beijing to the Vietnamese border - indeed, there is now a 'through-train' to Hanoi. Its role as a rail hub was enhanced with the completion in 1998 of the 'Nan-Kun' Railway to Yunnan Province's capital, Kunming.

Kaleidoscopic Nanning

In 2004 the annual China-ASEAN Expo, initiated by Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao in 2003, became permanently sited in Nanning, capital of Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region.
