Haptoglobin phenotyping from older bloodstains by enzyme immunoassay and haptoglobin phenotypes within a Nebraska Caucasian population

Enzyme immunoassay and Western blotting (electrophoretic) techniques were used to determine haptoglobin (HP) phenotypes from older bloodstains. Serum was collected from liquid blood and the HP phenotypes were determined. Bloodstains were prepared from these specimens and stored at various temperatures for several months. The stains were extracted and applied to gradient polyacrylamide gels. The Western blotting technique was used to achieve the transfer of HP bands from the gels to the nitrocellulose membranes. Enzyme immunoassay with goat anti-HP antiserum and rabbit anti-goat immunoglobulin peroxidase were used to identify the HP bands from the extracted samples. Enzyme immunoassay was found to be clearly more sensitive than o-dianisidine or o-tolidine in detecting HP bands from diluted serum samples. The haptoglobin frequency in a Caucasian population in Nebraska was calculated. The frequencies of Phenotypes 1, 2-1, and 2 were found to be 15.8, 48.4, and 35.8%, respectively.     

The possibility for determining haptoglobin phenotypes in blood stains after treatment with a luminol solution

The paper gives the results of tests for influence of luminol solution of different composition on detectability of haptoglobin fractions in the bloodstains of different ages. It was stated that alkaline luminol solutions reduce intensity of fractions and may hamper Hp phenotype determination especially in old stains.     

Phosphoglucomutase types in blood and hair roots taken from post-transfusion subjects

Pre- and post-transfusion blood samples were collected from 22 subjects together with the corresponding plucked hair samples taken 2 days and 2 weeks after the transfusion. The phosphoglucomutase1 (PGM1) subphenotypes of blood and hair were determined by isoelectric focusing and the phenotypes confirmed by gel electrophoresis. Many of the post-transfusion blood samples showed an alteration in the PGM1 bands when compared with the pre-transfusion samples. However, the PGM1 types determined from the hair samples were identical to the corresponding pre-transfusion samples in all cases.     

The identification of antigens of systems AB0, GM,and haptoglobin (HP) phenotypes in mixed bloodstains of human and domestic goose

The traditional methods of investigations according to systems AB0, Gm and Hp were used to define the serological specificity of home gooses' blood. The experimental examinations' results related with mixed bloodstains of man and home gooses are described. A possibility is demonstrated to identify the blood group factors of man in bloodstains with admixture of home-goose blood.     

Determination of phenotypes of haptoglobin and GLM(1) factor of human GM system in stains with admixtures of blood of some fish strains

It was shown that the phenotypes of haptoglobin (Hg) can not be detected in stains of dried blood of salmon, roach and bream. The results of experimental research of blood of the above fish species are described according to the Cm system. It was proven as possible to identify the human blood in stains with admixtures of blood of the above fish by using the Hp and Cm systems.     

Gambling among offenders: results from an Australian survey

This article outlines the results of a recent Australian survey of gambling, problem gambling, and gambling-related crimes among offenders. The research found that 34% of participant offenders had some form of gambling problem. This figure is 18 times higher than that found in the general population in the same Australian location. Many problem gamblers identified in the survey had not sought help for gambling and felt they didn't have a problem or were in control of their gambling. In addition, many survey participants said that their gambling was not problematic despite some admissions that they had committed gambling-related crimes. A significant implication of this study follows that offenders with gambling problems need to be offered therapeutic services while in the correctional system to reduce the prevalence of gambling problems and the commission of gambling-related offences.     

Phosphoglucomutase1 and 6-phosphogluconate dehydrogenase types in human skin and adipose tissue

Attempts were made to detect phenotypes of the enzymes phosphoglucomutase (PGM) and phosphogluconate dehydrogenase (PGD) in human skin and adipose tissues. Both enzymes could be typed using approximately 3 mg wet weight of tissue. Phenotypes could be distinguished after up to 15 days of aging for PGM and ten days of aging for PGD. Analysis of isoenzymes is potentially useful for mediolegal identification of human skin and adipose tissue.     

RituaL mutilation. Subincision of the penis among Australian Aborigines

Subincision of the penis is a traditional ritual mutilation unique to the Aborigines, the indigenous people of Australia. The mutilation is a urethrotomy in which the undersurface of the penis is incised and the urethra slit open lengthwise. Subincision is one element in the initiation of Aboriginal youths. In later ceremonies, repeated throughout adult life, the subincised penis is used as a site for ritual bloodletting. There also exists a ritual of penis holding which occurs when a subincised man enters a strange camp. The origin of subincision and the reason for its localization to the Australian continent has not been satisfactorily explained. The mutilation is still performed among tribal Aborigines, and identifies a man as holding a position of status within the tribe.     

Gene and genotype frequencies for HLA-DQA1 in Caucasians and Mulattoes in Brazil.

Gene and genotype frequencies of the HLA-DQA1 locus were determined in a sample of 197 unrelated individuals (144 Caucasians and 53 Mulattoes), living in the city of S?o Paulo, Brazil. The Mulatto group consisted of mixed individuals who presented at least one negroid physical characteristic or declared themselves to be of mixed ancestry. A total of six different alleles were identified with frequencies ranging from 0.087 to 0.316 in the Caucasian population and from 0.066 to 0.330 in the Mulatto population. We observed an increased frequency of allele 1.2 among Mulattoes in relation to Caucasians. The sample heterozygote frequency was 0.722 among Caucasians and 0.736 among Mullatoes. No significant deviations from Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium were found either in the Caucasian or in the Brazilian Mullato population samples.     

Haptoglobin subtypes in Berlin, GDR. A simple procedure for haptoglobin purification and subtyping

Sera were obtained from 1,275 blood donors in Berlin, probands involved in paternity tests, and from 119 families with 235 children; the sera were subtyped by isoelectric focusing, following preparation and reductive molecular cleavage of haptoglobin. In this paper, an uninvolved preparation technique is described for routine testing. Allelic frequencies are: Hp *1F = 0.1471; *1S = 0.2502; *2FF = 0.0020; *2FS = 0.5753; *2SS = 0.0251. Only one deviation from autosomal codominant inheritance was recorded in the family examinations, with illegitimacy considered possible. In the region of Berlin, the changes of ruling out uninvolved individuals in paternity suits have gone up from 18% (conventional technique recording two frequent alleles) to 33% (subtyping).     

Detection of orosomucoid 1 phenotypes in semen and semen stains

Orosomucoid 1 phenotypes were detected in seminal plasma by isoelectric focusing and immunoprinting. The orosomucoid 1 phenotypes in seminal plasma correlated with the types found in the corresponding serum specimens. Semen stains stored for ten days could be typed for orosomucoid 1. The present work revealed that orosomucoid 1 is a useful genetic marker for the medicolegal grouping of semen stains.

Commercial activities and copyright in Australian universities

With government funding for most Australian universities below 60% and falling a major strategic emphasis for universities has been on securing other sources of operating revenue, including commercial opportunities and partnerships. The implication of increasing commercial activities such as non-award and tailored professional programmes, contract research and consultancies within a university environment raises a number of issues in relation to copyright. This paper will discuss whether the educational provisions (including section 200AB introduced in the 2006 amendments) or the fair dealing provisions within the Copyright Act could be applied if copyright material is reproduced as part of a commercial activity undertaken by a university.
